For all the shit he takes here, for his pomposity, and his partisan takes on certain subjects which irked me, he was generally a smart and articulate voice on a lot of sports topics. And his memory for events was astounding. IMO there is no one now in either NYC or Boston who is close to what he does/did.

I suspect I'll listen to the new trio out of curiosity and to watch the 3-way car crash, I can't stand Michael Kay, and will probably listen a little more frequently to Felger and his puppet.

I suspect when his non-compete ends in (~90 days?) Francesa will end up on good public platform to monetize his abilities. I just wonder if it will be a 5-day a week gig.

I think he and Simmons on weekly podcast might be fun, at least for a while, as 2 big personalities with some opposite partisan views clash.
He’s already ruled out 5days a week. I bet he ends up doing a podcast with Simmons and appearing on NFL Network and Sirius periodically.

His next phase will be fascinating to see play out.

He's pretty smart about how he wants to be used, whom he trusts and how much free reign he gets. I think he'll do something that focuses on the things he actually cares about which is the Yankees and/or the NFL. Horse racing is more of a hobby for him and isn't high profile enough most likely. One thing is for sure, his work load just got way lighter. No more falling asleep on air.

where I was last at
A few minutes ago, I was listening to the last 1/2 hour of Boomer and the Joe & Evan open, and both mentioned the new show, as in to listen to Chris Carlin and Bart Scott, with no mention of Maggie (Gray?). I'd be pissed if I was her.

I obviously don't know if it was intentional or not, or just 3-names don't flow, but it seems the Old boys network is hard to escape.

They weren't a great listen. Scott seemed to be having some trouble keeping his distaste for the Pats in check. At least that is one thing that will stay consistent in that time slot.

The other 9/11 Inside Job: https://nypost.com/2017/12/18/craig-carton-they-had-mike-francesas-9-11-tapes-destroyed/

“What happened to those tapes are not a mystery,” Carton said. “Those tapes were deleted on orders from executives high above those that ran WFAN. The deletion of those tapes were overseen and mandated shortly after the comments were made. Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying to you. I know who deleted those tapes, and I know who ordered them to be deleted. Mike Francesa denying it all these years later is a flat-out lie.”

"Soft opening" with a mix of them until January so that there is not a lot of pressure for the first show. At least that is what I read somepleace.

Mike was great with Bill. Lots of energy, in good form, tons of takes. I could see him doing it next year and Bill would always have him since the respect is there.

I really enjoyed that one. Hope it is as good next week.

I’d be surprised if he winds up anywhere but the Ringer, unless he winds up doing his own self-financed thing. If he were to join the Ringer, I’d imagine he’d do three a week—Monday wrap with Simmons and Sal, mid-week solo with a guest (from sports, entertainment, or politics), and Friday weekend preview with Simmons.

How could The Ringer afford him? Mike would have to take a colossal discount to do that. Obviously it wouldn't be as much time, but they can't pay him millions a year. It would be awesome, however, so I'll hope along with you.

He would get a percentage of the ad revenue generated from his podcasts. He’d basically be using the Ringer platform. I doubt the salary would be a meaningful part of his compensation.

Turned on the new show. And they’re discussing whether the Giants would give up the 2nd pick for Bill. Maggie and Carlin say yes. Bart says no.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)

Just coming in to post that.

Still on that just now in the car (4PM). Still debating if #2 to the NEP is giving up too much. Maggie originally was questioning it, as BB is 65, so does he have the desire and energy to start all over with a new team (but in the end, she's on board with it, because he changes the culture of the entire franchise)

If you turn in for just 30 seconds, you might be confused into thinking BB has left the Pats, they're discussing it so casually.

I’d give up he next 3 years of first round picks if I were the Giants and Belichick gave them a 5 year commitment.

Yeah, no rebuilding for Bill at this stage. Reading the before and after articles in the NY press would be interesting.

Carlin did have a funny line to Breer when Breer said you don’t want to be the guy who follows the legend you want to be the next guy. And Carlin said we think that’s wrong.

I would think it takes much, much, much more than just the number two pick to get Belichick. I'd think even if he told Kraft he was quitting would still be more like 2 1s (including the number 2) and a significant player asset, or another high pick at a minimum. This guy is worth more than any player in the league---certainly more than a high (but uncertain) single draft pick.

To illustrate that, Belichick's price when the Jets sent him to Pats was the 16th pick in first round plus a 4 and a 7. He's worth a ton more now after 5 Super Bowls and all those division titles.

The price if he was willing to coach the Pats next year and the Giants were trying to take him away is almost incalculable---I'd think it's something like 3 1s plus a player (perhaps OBJ, given that he's about to be expensive---perhaps a younger cheaper asset). And he's worth that.

Any Giants fan who thinks the second pick is an overpay doesn't know much about value, imo.

He said on Bill's podcast that CAA (a pretty big time talent agency) was working with him to get a new gig. He said there will be something to announce shortly-ish.

Mike Francesa desperately misses doing New York sports radio and is trying to get back on the air, sources told The Post.

Francesa or his representatives have had talks with executives from 98.7 ESPN New York and WOR 710 AM, according to sources, but what also can’t be ruled out at this point is a return to WFAN in some form.

Francesa, 64, could have stayed at FAN in a reduced time slot. FAN was willing to shorten his hours, but he declined. He and company executives also held brief talks after Craig Carton was arrested for his role in an alleged Ponzi scheme. It opened the door for Francesa to remain at FAN without looking as if he were losing face. However, Francesa asked for a raise, and no deal was reached.

With ESPN, Francesa has tried to entice the New York affiliate to take his Sunday morning NFL show and put it on its airwaves this fall, according to sources. ESPN would not consider putting Francesa in place of Kay’s show. It is unclear how a partnership with WOR, which does have the Mets’ games, would work. WOR currently has Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity on the afternoons.

Francesa has been eligible to sign with any radio station since April 1, but has been unable to find anything as a second career after FAN. But now, he desperately wants to get back on the radio and is trying to find a job at a New York station.

Mike Francesa is returning to WFAN, and, sources say, the plan will be for him to be back on weekday afternoons.

While it is not yet clear how FAN will configure the afternoons, initial indications are Francesa’s replacements, Chris Carlin, Maggie Gray and Bart Scott, will not be let go, according to sources. They are expected to still be part of the afternoon schedule, although final plans of how the hours will be split up have not been communicated internally yet, according to sources.

Francesa is not expected to be on from 1-6:30 p.m., as he had been for the better part of the last three decades until he decided to have a “retirement” tour. A three-hour show would seem likely. However, the plans are in flux because of the volatility of Francesa’s personality, the fact he has recently feuded with the current FAN hosts, including Boomer Esiason, and Francesa and management having put Carlin, Gray and Scott in an extremely awkward and chaotic environment after only three months on the job.

The likely time for Mike’s new show is either 3-6:30 or 3:30-6:30, but Mike is saying there are conspiracy theories and campaigns against him so all reporting is a by the moment thing.

He should be embarrassed. He was showered with praise and gifts for his "retirement" for 6 months, had an unbelievable goodbye tour....and he's back in less time than his goodbye.

Am I happy he's back? Eh...no. The Michael Kay show is better, smarter, and I think more entertaining. Francesa is like a dark cloud over sports radio.

I can't listen to Kay. hearing his voice is like an allergic reaction. I gave C/B/M a shot and thought them terrible and started to listen to more Felger/Mazz and on rare ocassion SA Smith, who I started to hate less, and appreciate a little more. If Francesa returns, my F/M #s go down.

Basically Jay Leno all over again just with Francesa playing the role.

If he was the Pope before, one suspects with his resurrection, he will now become the savior.

His ego will be out of control, its going to be both funny and infuriating,
