Jaylen or Tatum?

If the Celtics could only keep one of them, who would you prefer that they keep?

  • Jaylen Brown

  • Jayson Tatum

The only player I’d trade either for (non pipe dream division) is the Brow. And he’s probably pipe dream as well. No way I move either for Kawhi given the injury issues and big price tag coming soon. If for some odd reason KAT went on the block, then sure.

Jaylen showed today that he has that alpha-dog mentality of "just give me the ball and let me go score". If he can improve even more on his shot-making and decision-making gets better the sky is the limit for him. I also think both could add a post up game. As for Tatum, as has been said he could put 10-15 lbs on and be more of a physical player.
I'm very optimistic about his ability to improve in playmaking, just based on how awful his instincts on D looked last year and at Cal, and how much he's improved them. He might be a guy who is smart enough to learn things explicitly that a lot of guys do just through natural feel.

One thing with Tatum and Brown - they are still figuring out the league and what they can do and what they can do. Tatum, in particular, I think gives the league too much credit. There are times when he should just go up with the ball and shoot over people but for now he's looking to create space.
Agree: I don't think he realizes how long he is and how much space that gives, especially on 3-pointers. He also doesn't seem to realize that guys sometimes close him out short because he's such a threat to drive, whereas Jaylen has gotten quite good at shooting over short closeouts. I'm guessing that after another summer of work, Tatum will shore up that hole though.

Giannis? There's probably about a 20% chance he becomes disgruntled within the next 2 years.

He might become disgruntled, but any Antetokounmpo trade is a ways off as he just started the first year of his new extension and he’s going to be eligible for one of those skip-a-tier Designated Veteran contracts when it comes time to extend.

I voted Tatum and I didn't think twice about it. Sometimes I think people (not so much around here) underestimate him because of how polished he is and the fact that he's merely an above average NBA athlete. But it's not like he's a 4 year senior 22 year old who can't jump. He's a 6'8" rookie who can really, really shoot and has a strong handle. Who knows what the future holds but it's easy to see him blossoming into a tier one offensive player. Look how much he improved from college and then again from summer league.

Who are the 5-6 best offensive players in the NBA? LeBron, Curry, Durant, Harden, AD, and Giannis? Three of them are total athletic freaks and three are guys who aren't (by NBA standards) but who have some truly elite skills. We shouldn't count on Tatum becoming that close to one of Curry/Harden/Durant but few can and he certainly has the profile.

As for who is better today? Sometimes it feels like you really see where a guy is at in the playoffs. It seemed clear Rozier had taken a step forward last year during the playoffs and after a slow start he reached and exceeded that level this year. Right now, today, Brown is the better player. He showed offensive flashes like this as early as the first week of the season but he's gotten much more consistent this past month and seems to have really taken a big step forward offensively to match the giant leap he made defensively.

To me the best part of today is that the Jay Crew proved to themselves that they can perform to their own expectations on the road in the playoffs. That’s huge. There are very few guys in the NBA I’d move either for right now. The list is basically KATman, the Unibrower, and the Greek Freak.

A nice moment from Tatum today happened coming out of timeout, right after Giannis posterized Horford to put the Bucks up 7 late in the 4th.

Tatum got the ball, drove, help defense collapsed on him, and he made a nice little bounce pass to Horford for an and-1. I think we’ll see a lot more of that kind of thing from him, among other things.

Jaylen very clearly made the most of his first offseason as an experienced NBA player - I expect Tatum to do the same.

I am hesitant to deal either one - I think they might be, in effect, our Bird and McHale, millennial version.

I think Ainge is in the perfect situation. If the Kawhi price drops precipitously, he can pounce. If not, he stands pat. The real value of J&J is that they will enable the Celtics to keep their core guys fresh for the playoffs.

Kyrie isn’t old but he gets banged up a lot and needs to take some games off to stay fresh. Hayward is obviously coming back from a serious injury and should be worked back slowly. Horford isn’t old at 32 but he’s no longer young either.

It is a big advantage for the Celtics to have 2 guys this young who can shoulder the scoring load on any given night. Thus, J&J continue to get plenty of opportunities to develop and the vets don’t get taxed.

And then come playoff time next April, they destroy everyone in their path.

Sure, although exactly the same applied to Kyrie in summer 2016, in arguably a better basketball situation.

I feel like both players are better than they were a few weeks ago. Maybe it's revealing whatever was already there or maybe it's the crucible of the upcoming and then current playoffs distilling new skills and developing them.

Playoff Jaylen is a revelation. But I also saw Tatum getting freaky with the Greek late in today's game that makes me think he's learning the physical game--guy reworked his 3 point shot last summer, right? What kind of program will they have him on now? /ROYBeef

My guy is to say Tatum, but I really don't think I know enough basketball to make this kind of call anymore than if you asked me who the best living particle physicist is. Also: I <3 Danny Ainge.

Edit Addendum: I really believe Danny and Brad have a larger organizational philosophy such that I don't know what they'd be looking for in it. But there's something about the make-up a lot of these guys, to say nothing of landing Hayward who played for Brad in college. So I have to take seriously that, if they had to move one, it might be based on something that I don't understand.

I mean, we haven't even been able to figure out a good way of figuring out how good Smart is.

I called out that pass play by Tatum in the game thread. That’s exactly what he needs to start doing and I was so excited to see it. He gets swallowed up easily near the hoop and gets blocked, a ton. If he starts recognizing and passing off to a rolling teammate, it’ll be tremendous.

Do they keep track of whose shot gets blocked the most?

I love both of these guys. I want this season to go as long as possible, but I'm absolutely drooling over a healthy starting five next year of Kyrie, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, and Horford, with possibly a top draft pick in 2018 sitting on the bench. No idea what the rest of the bench will look like but that starting five alone is talented enough for all five of them to be all-stars. There's not enough shots to go around for all five of them to put up enough stats to actually all be all-stars, but make no mistake, in 2018-19, all five of them absolutely could be all-star caliber players.

And they all shoot and attack closeouts at very high to elite levels. There won't be any "only one ball" issues.

Well my point about that is that you won't see all five of them average 20 points and 7 assists, because there's only so many shots to go around. And so when it comes to All-Star voting, they won't all get on the team because their individual stats just won't line up with what other guys on other teams are doing. But that won't mean they aren't playing at an All-Star level; on the contrary, I think that group of five guys has the very real possibility of ALL playing at an All-Star level next year, at the same time.

I think we all agree with this. Kyrie will probably be the only all-star and that may be a reputational thing vs. pure numbers. Hayward/Brown/Tatum will all probably be in the 14-18 range. I expect Al to be around 10 or so in the Draymond mold where he does everything else that doesn’t get appreciated as much. The biggest thing is that this team will be impossible to gameplan for. It will be the NBA’s whack-a-mole where you try to shut down Kyrie but then Jaylen hangs 25-30 on you. Or Tatum. Or Hayward.

Yep, that's exactly how I see it. Cannot wait. It'll be the NBA equivalent of the fully loaded Patriots offense. Who do you game plan for?

You’ll basically have to do what the Bucks are doing now. Mug the shit out of them knowing that the refs can’t/won’t call everything.

In fairness that was caused by Cleveland’s attempt to trade Irving to Phoenix without first speaking to him. So in Irving’s mind he wasn’t ever getting the designated veteran contract because the Cavs were determined to trade him.

Now, if the Bucks enter into quiet talks with the Kings about trading Antetokounmpo without first consulting Giannis, then all bets are off. Aside from that, count on him signing one of those supermax extensions in another three years.

List of players I'd trade Tatum for after factoring in age and contract status:

Davis
Durant
LeBron
Curry
Harden
The Freak
Embiid
Simmons (may re-evaluate if I don't see improved shooting)
Towns

List is now under 10 players and given that everyone on that list is basically untouchable, Tatum has reached that level for me.

My list is even smaller than yours. He was the best player on the floor during game one, which includes two guys off your list. Now, while he hasn't yet had his Best player on the floor that leaves the opponent's best player sitting in front of his locker with a thousand yard stare on his face trying to figure out what the fuck just happened moment, rest assured, it's coming. Soon.

Yeah, to be honest, I’m not 100% sold on the last 3 guys on my list. I think we’ll be having Simmons vs. Tatum debates for a long time.

Agree. Not to sidetrack the thread, but Playoff Al is probably the biggest reason the Cs are overperforming this postseason. It's like having a Draymond who can shoot.

Embiid I think really really hard about because of the injuries and conditioning issues. Simmons is a hard pass: he's shown no signs that he can improve his shot at all. Towns I probably would take, just because I think Brad would fix his D and deploy him much better on offense.

I love Al like many here and think his rep is hilariously wrong. I also loved the way the announcers kept defending him on all-star weekend as deserving.

And yet, the dude on hitting the play-offs—It's like when the guy in the movie drops his cover and turns out to be an MI6 (former SAS, always) agent. It's like he's five years younger and just as savvy--total joy to watch.

It is good watching him bully ball a lot more in these playoffs. He has really dug in and decided to create some offense for himself, not just everyone else.

The defense and general facilitation is basically the same Al that he has been for two years.

And you're right--his rep is hilariously wrong. Part of that is a casual's fan's focus on box store stats, but more depressing is how many people among the commentariat class still think that defense is largely irrelevant. That shit hasn't changed in the almost forty years that I have been watching. There are always a select few guys who get special props for being defensive wizards and regarded highly as such, but a great defensive player with very good offense still gets maligned as being a mediocre player in 2018 by smart people.

Indeed. And I think it brings us back around to the Jaylen-Tatum "debate" in that we have to assume Brad and Danny are watching how people play with other people. I mean, I miss Kyrie, but one of the things I miss is his two man game with Horford which was beautiful in itself in addition to opening up other things.

So now we see what they're like without Kyrie, but still with Horford... and we learned more about Rozier!

If nothing else, this postseason run is going to be helpful for cementing Tatum in people's eyes as a legit scorer in the league. That *should* help for getting foul calls next year.

Haha. No. You want to talk about losing face among players? Convincing him to come here in FA, he gets hurt, misses season, and then you deal him? You essentially took away his FA decision with him never really playing. It will not happen.

List of players I would consider trading the next decade of Tatum for:

Anthony Davis.

That’s it. Considering he’s still on a rookie contract and is only 20 years old, I’m not sure there’s another player in the league that offers Tatum’s combination of current skill, upside, youth, and contract value.

Tatum could significantly improve his game by simply protecting the ball better on drives.

He reminds me a little of a young Patrice Bergeron [how is that for a cross sport comp?]. As a teenaged rookie, Bergeron obviously lacked physical maturity - wasn't as fast or strong as he would be even 2 years later - but he could contribute because he seemed to have an innate understanding of the game.

Tatum is sort of like a more skilled version of that. As good as he was today, he'd be significantly better if he could simply protect the ball better on drives. He played 13 first half minutes and had 4 turnovers, at least 3 on drives where he just couldn't hang on to the ball - a common problem for him.

At the same time, it seems like he's adding new skills he can use on a weekly basis. He didn't shoot many floaters this season, but he had a beautiful one tonight. He's got the patience now to up fake around the hoop and let the defender leap out of way before putting in an easy layup (he and Al each scored a critical basket down the stretch that way tonight).

I'm starting to think the sky is the limit for him. He made some key defensive plays tonight, he's shown some abilty to create for teammates that he can surely build on, and he just looks like the sort of guy who can set his mind to developing some new skill and just do it.

People talk about flaws in his game, but the amazing thing about him right now is not that his game is perfect - it is how productive he is, anyway, despite the flaws, at age 20 in his first season. And it is that he has stepped up his game in the playoffs.
