I won't be shocked if Slater does not get re-signed. Injury filled year for an aging special teamer is no inducement to keep him. I realize what he has been and meant to the Pats, but cheap gunners are available at very low prices.

He's such an important part of the locker room and is still playing at a high level. He's coming back.

We should also really be counting the Kenny Britt acquisition as part of this year's offseason, since he arrived too late last year to do much. He had a 1,000 yard season in 2016 on one of the worst passing offenses in recent memory. And he's going to be way cheaper than guys like Jordy Nelson.

There was sentiment for, let’s-kick-the-tires on Jordy. The tire kicking cost the Raiders 15 — 13 of which is guaranteed — over 2 years.

Those of us that mentioned Jordy did not account for the Raiders spending like fools. No one wanted that kind of deal.

I was trying (and probably failing) to make more of a pro-Britt point than an anti-Jordy one. If you like the idea of taking a chance on a possibly-washed-up-but-recently-productive veteran, they have a guy like that already. I think we've kind of forgotten about Britt because he did so little down the stretch, but that just gives him a jump-start on learning the offense that a new acquisition wouldn't have. Britt wasn't part of the 2017 picture, not really, but he could be part of the 2018 picture.

That's not to say I'm bullish on Britt - WRs who lose it often lose it, and the Pats have a terrible track record with these kinds of players (Galloway, Ochocinco, Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne). But he's a potential factor.

1 year, $7 million for Honey Badger. That's a reasonable deal. Wish BB was in on that.
I thought Honey Badger was part he wanted to go someplace that would spotlight him and get him back to the type of scheme when he first came in. Not sure the Pats would have been viable with both Chung and McCourty taking up the spots. Though don’t know if Texans are a good fit either.

Something must have gotten away from me as I follow the NFL/Jets pretty closely but I find many of these deals to be short years for not much money.

My internal talent metric is probably what’s messing up my thinking as I only watch the Jets closely week in week out.

Shocked that Honey Badger went for just one year, 7 mill. I don't care what the Patriots secondary situation is, for a guy that young and good and versatile to be available - a guy BB loved coming out of college not all that long ago - and for the Patriots, a team in dire need of athletic playmakers on the defensive side of the ball... Jesus. I wonder if they even tried to bring him in.

Texans D is gonna be fun to watch.

Injuries took their toll on him but he had a great career given what he was working with.
One time I drove cross-country and had lunch in a McDonald's in North Platte, NE, Woodhead's home town. They had posters of him for sale in the convenience store. I thought that was cool.

I advocated for "kicking the tires" on a used Jordy Nelson, not paying full list price. Nobody here was promoting Nelson at the type of silly money the Raiders just paid.

To me, the Rams make the most sense. He can play next to Aaron Donald and not be double teamed. He could put up big numbers there if motivated.
+1. Two man wrecking crew. The joys of having a starting QB on a rookie deal.

Certain NFC teams are smartly run and flexing their muscle. A real conference disparity is beginning to take shape.

Lions signed Ricky Jean-Francois and are also hosting Alan Branch on a visit. Patricia likes him some familiarity.

Glad to see the Slater signing. The leadership aspect is huge IMO, especially in light of the recent rumors about unrest in the land of Belichick. I love what he does on the field with ST’s, but he’s got some intangibles that are important in this day and age when there is so much season to season roster turnover.

Wasn't it Branch who effectively gave up and went full on buffet/retirement mode?
Am I misremembering?

Patriots were 1 of 13 teams at Johnny Manziel's workout today in San Diego.

I think this would be nothing but a win-win for the Pats. Sign him to nothing guaranteed a minimal contract and see what he can bring to training camp and possibly some preseason games We gave it a shot with Tebow, I know he has had off field issues, but if he has matured and wants to do it. Brady would be a great model for him

I really want to read a Belichick tell all book at the end where half of this stuff was just to troll the haters and ESPN.

HT: PFF podcast. The Jets now have 16 wide receivers on their roster. I wonder what teams also have glaring log jams where you expect cuts to come and some guys being available in the summer. Patriots (and other teams of course) are savvy there.
Edit: Rosters are larger and some will be special teamers but 16 is still quite a receiving core in terms of quantity.

The Patriots were in attendance at Texas A&M’s pro day today at the team’s indoor practice facility.
They were there with 31 other teams to watch 14 Aggies players auditioning for next month’s draft. But there was also someone else there of note: Johnny Manziel.
Manziel threw to receivers and running backs including Texas A & M’s star receiver Christian Kirk, who has drawn a lot of interest.
According to a source, the Patriots spoke with Manziel both before the workout, as well as after the session.

I would LOVE Manziel on a cheap 3 year deal with incentives, something like that. He is a very good player if he can keep it together.

I can see them taking a flier. Why not? Their QB of the future is not on the roster.
