The only reason I know is because my buddies have a podcast (Alternate Shot...pretty solid and not just because they’re friends) and they get on him. The biggest issue they have with Smylie has traditionally not seemed to take his game too seriously and he can’t just show up and play. No idea what’s going on behind the scenes but it’s sadly become a running joke at this point.

Awesome leaderboard. Stenson, DeChambeau, Rory, Rose are the final 2 groups. Fowler 4 back. Tiger shot a 69 yesterday, enters today T10 and 5 back of the lead. Probably too steep of a hill to climb, but you never know.

Making up 5 strokes is possible. And what is possible is what I'm focusing on today.

His lowest round so far this year is 67 and since returning at the Hero has twice as many rounds in the 70s than in the 60s. He'd need at least a 65 today (which would be his lowest round since 2015).

Not saying he can't do it, but yeah, I don't think it's happening.

More than that though, everyone else ahead of him would need to fall off. Tiger isn’t going to blow the field away anymore, partly because he isn’t that player anymore and partly because there is a lot of talent on the tour. Last week was a perfect week for Tiger to win.

I don't plan to leave the couch today.

Well we don't know if he's that player anymore or not.

Yea, this. Definitive statements about what he's capable of if he stays healthy are hot take nonsense. No one knows and if they're saying they do it's because they're guessing with hope they can say "I told you so" down the line. He's such a rare talent and his circumstances so unique I don't think it's possible to project.

He sure looks like a guy who can hang with the Spieths and Johnsons of the though. Right now he's obviously not the 2004 Tiger that was several gears better than anyone else but the past few weeks have been a major reminder of his talent. It's also been the most interesting regular tour events have been in several years.

Mammoth cut there on the 5th tee. 379 yard par 4, he usually uses an iron but he’s trying to get after it today. Looked like it wound up somewhere around the green.

Dave Pelz did a study years ago and concluded you should always leave the pin in when you are allowed to, unless you know that the flag is severely leaning toward you.

He’s going to need to pick up birdies outside of the par 5’s.

I think Henrik is too good to back up much today. The 3-wood will keep him in play all day.

Tiger is -9, 12 holes left. 4 off the lead. Looks to be too far away. But still making a bit of noise.
He's going to need to get a couple of long putts to drop somewhere along the way, and steal a couple of birdies. If he just makes birdie on the par 5's, and the 1/2 holes he hits it close, he probably comes up short, but if he drops one like he's looking at on this hole, it could start to get real interesting. And of course, bogey is not an option unless the leaders completely fall apart.

Tiger had another birdie chance on 7. He's hitting it really well, but you are right, the putts have to drop. And that's asking a lot.

Tiger is now 53/53 this week inside of 9 feet. Just made the 6 footer for birdie. -3 thru 8. Doing everything he can right now, but Stenson looks like he's in cruise control too.

He’s been aggresive and playing to win. May have caught him there, but we’ll see. Looked like trampled down grass in that area, so he should get a decent lie after the drop. Then it is a matter of what kind of tree problems he has.

Edit: Looks like he’ll have a shot here.

I don’t think that’ll happen here. 3 of the 4 guys he’s chasing are major winners. They’ve been through the rodeo before.
