I understand that hes obtuse but how can you not love a man who actually said during an NBA game "350 years ago sir Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity. And tonight Eric Piatkowksi is breaking it". Or compared Boris Diaw to the great men of the rennaissance and Beethoven.

Because it's non-stop for the entire game and a large chunk of it is gibberish. Again, if he'd just cut out the schtick and actually take the job seriously, I think he could have a lot to offer but as it is, he makes it close to impossible to watch (somehow I found a volume level last night where I could mostly tune him out).

On a related note, I have always found it funny that during basketball broadcasts, a huge percentage of passes that cause the announcer (especially if it is an ex-player) to immediately exclaim "nice pass!" result in instant turnovers. This is of course because they say "nice pass!" when it's a possibility that they didn't see before, but often the reason they didn't see it is because it wasn't actually there, hence the turnover. Of course Walton is a prime offender here but so are plenty of others.

That's a great line.

How fast things change. Pro Rondo and anti IT.
I think people want to see Boston turn on IT or something. That's very strange, but you're not the first to hungrily anticipate some sort of evidence of that on this board.

IT said all the right things afterwards. He did seem to try and be the one taking the high road.

Rondo seems to have been a bit of an asshole in this episode, and we watched him be "our asshole" for 8+ years so we know his MO. He's also hysterical about it. ("oh, that's what we celebrate around here?") One can think the whole thing funny without taking Rondo's "side" in it.

Joker finishes with 30, 17, and 15. He got in foul trouble in the 3rd, limiting his minutes
The full list of players in league history who have gone for 30/15/15 or more:

Wilt Chamberlain
Oscar Robertson
Magic Johnson
Larry Bird
James Harden
Nikola Jokic

Lillard for whatever reason, loves playing the Warriors and averages more points against them than any other team in the NBA. I wonder why he is at his best against such a stout defensive team.

Whoa, 3rd-10th in the West is so bunched that the Spurs in 3rd are only 2 ahead in the loss column of the Clippers in 9th, and Utah in 10th has won 11 in a row and is charging, so that should be a wild last 25 games or so for those 8 teams.

It's pretty clear where the extra motivation comes from. Lillard was born and raised in Oakland, starred in HS in Oakland, so competing against your hometown team in front of your hometown fans in half of those games is going to get him fired up over the course of an 82-game grind. The Warriors provide a "circle" game for him which all players have for one reason of another.

Yeah but I'd handicap it as really 6-10 playing for 3 spots. It's whoever blinks first (3+ game losing streak) that loses the game of musical chairs between the clipps, nuggs, blazers, jazz, and pelicans.

Beyond being the hottest team, Utah also has the easiest and most home-friendly remaining schedule (15 h, 10 a), which adds to the free for all.

Yeah, going by Pythag, you'd think SA, OKC and MIN 's spots are pretty safe, but none of them have been tearing it up lately, and when you're talking about a two-game lead in the loss column, any little stumble (ankle tweak by a key player, inordinately bad luck in close games, e.g.) could spell doom. Remember the last day of the 2015, when the Spurs could have sewn up the #2 seed, but lost to the Pelicans, tumbled to #6, and ended up getting bounced by your #3 Clips in the first round? I could see something like that happening this year, only with a presumptive #3-6-seed tumbling right out of the playoff picture.

I'm sure some of it is that he's an Oakland kid (who grew up rooting for the Warriors), so half those games have been in front of his family and friends. Also: the challenge of going against Steph, a similar player who's always just a tantalizing half-step ahead of him on the ladder.

And he's obviously a great player in general, so his Warriors splits, while very good, are not anomalous:

26.8 pts on .594 ts v. TOR
26.7 pts on .580 ts v. GS
26.3 pts on .595 ts v. UTA
26.0 pts pn .590 ts v. IND
25.9 pts on .594 ts v. LAL
25.4 pts on .629 ts v. CLE

Lillard is also a guy that feels disrespected and underappreciated because he plays in a small market. He thinks of himself as Curry's equal and uses these games to try and prove it.

EDIT: Said Lillard twice, meant Curry

If there's one guy who is Lillard's equal, it has to be Lillard.

I don't know the right place for this-here or the Kyrie thread or the Cavs one- but it's excellent.

Jaylen led the futures game with 35 and this....

Guessing he had a chip on his shoulder from being left off last year

A year ago, Donovan Mitchell, who is a former student, advisee, and my old centerfielder/pitcher, stopped by my classroom to visit. I told him that if I were him. I would return to Louisville for his junior year and then come out after the NCAA's for the 2018 NBA Draft. Thankfully, he didn't listen to me. Needless to say, I am very proud of him.

Eh. It's interesting but doesn't really give us the best 16 teams
No, but it makes it so Houston and Golden State could be the finals and also makes Boson’s path potentially more difficult projecting forward.

Yea, I don't feel too bad if a slightly better team doesn't sneak into the 16 seed. It is far more important to have the two best teams in the finals regardless of geography.

I would tell a student never to listen to a teacher or a coach on the matter. ;)

I've been passing the time by watching old videos. Here is Hakeem just demolishing Seattle; by the end they are triple teaming him and he is still scoring:

This is fucking huge.

Makes a lot of what Cuban said about Donald Sterling make a lot more sense.
These stories are horrific and relieving at the same time. My hope is every one that breaks to show what so many women face makes it a little less likely the cycle continues.

Can you help make the connection between Sterling and Cuban for me? Is it that even 'morons' shouldn't lose their teams?

If you got to the end of the article, it speaks well of UA that Ussery only lasted 60 days in their employ. It didn't take him long to start harassing their employees and they quickly dumped him. Cuban, not so much.

Yes. Caping up for Donald Sterling looked very odd now. This is a pretty good "why".

Awesome article. Some choice bits, my favorite being:
• Jan. 17, 2008: Terdema asks me if in another life would I marry him? I respond if it was another life I would be a millionaire and own this team and he couldn’t handle working for me.
Cuban himself is addressed only 2/3s of the way down the article. I'm glad to see he's not personally involved as a perpetrator or an overt enabler, but certainly bears a lot of responsibility in the "sins of omission" category. It does seem like he's taking decisive and more-than-token action, which is good. The extent to which he turned a blind eye from 2000-2015, however, is a pretty galling black mark on his legacy.

Cross-posting to the Men Behaving Badly thread. Nice pull, E5.

This makes Cuban look like a real hypocrite too. He's always being pushed as progressive and what not.
Ussery is the headline, but Pittman shouldn't be forgotten in this mess ... particularly since he was apparently brought in to improve the culture of the organization.

B/R:

"The Golden State Warriors have reportedly budgeted time to meet with local children in lieu of making an appearance at the White House to commemorate their 2016-17 NBA title during their upcoming road trip to Washington, D.C.

According to ESPN.com's Chris Haynes and Ramona Shelburne, Warriors players collectively "decided to go on a private tour of an undisclosed locale" and "selected a venue in which local kids would join them and it would be closed off to the media."

"It's their championship. They got disinvited to the White House, so it's up to them what they wanted to do. So, they made their plans," head coach Steve Kerr told Haynes and Shelburne. "I want the players to have a good day and to do something positive and to enjoy what they're doing.""
I really, really am enjoying the tack that Silver and what seems to be most of the coaches when asked about player activities like this. Like, they're all like, They're grown ups., they do stuff, why are you asking me anyway?

Sixers win a tight one in Chicago as Bobby Portis has 38 points including 6/9 from 3 (career high was 4) and Nwamba 3/3 (!) And Levine 5/7 from 3.

Just a weird ass game

Simmons line (including 2 clutch ft late down 1 to win)
32 points, 7 rebounds, 11 assists, 1 steal, 1 block
13/18 shooting including a couple jumpers and 2 turnovers
Embiid
30 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 4 blocks and 3/3 from deep.

The rest of the team was brutal and the two kids carried them.
