As opposed to the current model that allows a rich team to pay for its mistake by stashing an overpaid (yet possibly otherwise deserving of an MLB shot) IFA in the minors.
As noted in E5's post and quotes from the Globe article that is no longer the current model. Teams can no longer avoid luxury tax obligations by hiding a player in the minors like the Sox have done recently with Craig and Castillo.

Castillo's chances of getting to the majors do improve slightly next year if the Sox do indeed go over the tax threshold.

So, if Castillo plays for Pawtucket for the rest of his career, the Red Sox don’t have to count his salary against the luxury tax.

What if they just released him? Would that mean they did have to count it?

Suppose they released him, and then resigned him to a new deal at the major league minimum?

Interesting question. My guess it counts toward LT if he is released and picked up and placed on 40 man by some other team , with Red Sox paying all but the minimum. If he never gets picked up beyond a minor league deal (not 40 man) then no change and no impact on LT. Thats just a guess.

If he continues his progress and is needed he could be up with the RED Sox this year if needed, so long that does not take them over the 40 million mark over thr threshold

Actually, if the Sox can't get JDM done that would open a possible path back to the majors. Boston will be over the cap anyways I believe and I don't think there's much doubt he's better than Brentz. A good ST could see him back on the team.
