yeah, they did kinda stand around as the OL made no attempt to push them back. I have a feeling they were expecting a run, and once none came, they lost whatever plan they had. I have no doubt that at this very moment, Belichick is doing monday morning film review with the team, humiliating everyone who was in on that play except for Rowe.

The bottom line is that you can't throw that ball if you're Roethlisberger. The WR is tightly covered by his man, he also needs to get across the face of McCourty, and Richards is standing (or, typically, not quite standing but very close) in the throwing lane just ahead. Just fire the thing five yards over everybody's head, kick the field goal, and go to OT.

For what its worth, I think Ben had a pretty fantastic game before that, maybe the best game I can remember him playing against the Patriots.

I finally saw a different replay thanks to a post in the Nations Tears thread.

Trey Flowers is the left-side lineman that almost gets to Roethlisberger from Ben's right as the ball is thrown, and he's active from the snap. There's a Patriots DL in the middle that is also engaging the play; just that it's hard to see as he's basically surrounded by black jerseys, although you see his arm extend out once the ball is thrown. The two linemen on the right side of the DL (one appears to be Marquis Flowers; I can't tell how the other is) are indeed standing around along with the left side of the Steelers offensive line. It's possible they can't really see what's going on, and so may be simply trying to avoid anything that results in a penalty. It's also possible they are simply fooled and are getting ready to hear it from the coaches during film review this week.

All the other Pats players are clearly playing a designated role and are either engaging Eli or keeping an eye on their assigned player. Jordan Richards is in good position to guard against a Roethlisberger scramble, and Rowe, McCourty, and Harmon are surrounding Eli. Chung is keeping an eye on the players on the left side of the Steelers' backfield, while Gilmore and Butler start moving towards the play once it's clear where the pass is going and that noone else is a receiving threat.

Man, the Steelers really aren't covering themselves in glory today.

Interesting: Ben Roethlisberger said the Steelers were still deciding whether to call time-out after that huge JuJu Smith-Schuster gain at the end of the Pats game, but ref Tony Corrente assumed he was - and whistled it.

No, Ben was signaling timeout as he ran up the field.

Ben Roethlisberger says Steelers had just one play ready to go after that Jesse James TD was overturned: "I wish we would've called two plays. I wish we had two plays ready to go."

I wonder if the 5 time champs would have had 2 plays called? Nah, probably not, BB doesn't roll like that.

Ben Roethlisberger says the more he's watched the Jesse James non-TD the more he disagrees: "I felt like he caught it, brought it into his body and then reached out. And yeah when it hit the ground it came out, but I felt the reach was a football move."

Football move, you say? No such thing in the rulebook, Ben.

His hand motion is so weird... it starts as a timeout on the first touch than morphs into a "huddle" motion by the end. I think he did screw up. I think the Steelers might not have wanted a timeout, but good ole Ben already started signaling for it.

The refs obliged him.

Right, but of course then the clock would have bled under 25 seconds.

Imagine a reversed situation where Ben DID want timeout, but the ref didn't think so, and the ref then just let the clock run. Imagine how pissed the Steelers would be? Just another example of how they botched the end of the game.

Damn, Ben. the timeout was the right call. You would have made 300 lb lineman sprint down the field and get set while the clock is ticking away under 30 seconds? Not to mention it gave your OC a chance to get his bearings. I'm sure a first and goal play was not in his immediate plans for that drive. It was a major momentum shift and the timeout was properly utilized.

Oh I agree. I think it goes to show how chaotic the end game was for them. They never had a plan for what happened. They weren't expecting 69 yard gain, were playing for field goal, and suddenly realized we can win, oh shit what do we do, timeout, no timeout, fuck I signaled timeout already.

I mean, hasn't it been revisited every year since like 2010 or whenever the Calvin Johnson play happened? Whatever.

Yep, exactly. And similarly they weren't prepared after Bryant was talked in bounds the next play. Spike! Oh wait, we have time! Run a play! Fake spike! Only one WR runs a route, INT, ballgame. They panicked multiple times.

It is Tuesday. Shouldn't the Steelers be "on to" ....their next game?
Imagine BB's reaction if a reporter asked him on Tuesday about any part of a game the previous Sunday.

That's great coaching right there. "We'll let Ben do what he wants and go from there." Way to take accountability for what happened. What a bunch of clowns.
They are still talking about a game from 2 days ago.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch!

Mike Tomlin says no, he did not want that time-out after the long JuJu Smith-Schuster completion. Says Ben Roethlisberger was signaling to HIM and Tony Corrente called it - and that he then questioned the ref as to why he called a timeout that did not originate from the bench.

Ben did a complete 360 signaling timeout. Sure looked to me he was looking for an official, not Tomlin.
That is a great point. The only other reason to do the 360 is if he's calling for a huddle. But that doesn't sqaure with what Tomlin said. Brings us back to: StopTalking.

Why not... they were talking about this game three weeks ago. Might as well talk about it for another 3 weeks. They say nature loves it some symmetry or something.

I wonder how diehard Steeler fans feel about this? I saw plenty of rational fans crucify the DC for leaving Sean Davis 1-on-1 with Gronk at the end.

Tomlin will never outcoach BB in a game. Ever. Nor ever win at Foxboro. They have a lot of elite talent so they could win someday (have to go to them next year in regular season as well) but it won't be because of coaching.

It's what I said above...

"timeout timeout, oh fuck... umm huddle huddle"... watch his hands change as he spins. They had no plan.

He was looking for permission. He's been told that consent is very important.
Is this the Steelers thread or the "Amirite?!" thread?

I get the sense the actual steelers fans on this board aren't even bothering to post here right now.

Maybe if we stop the forum equivalent of gronking the football, some of them might decide it'd be worth their time to speak up.

I bet they're fine with it. The "on to.." mantra is what the Patriots do and we all know how much they hate the team, and especially Bill. No way they see those comments as a flaw in Tomlin

By speaking today, its still a story for today's talk shows in Pittsburgh and tomorrow's newspapers. Tomlin is just providing oxygen to the fire.

I can tell you #Steelers' defensive calls called for extra help on Rob Gronkowski on BOTH those long completions and the 2pt conversion at the end. Help failed all 3X. Mike Tomlin says: "It's a reality that errors happen in football... we don't make excuses."

Ahem.

"We made some good plays. We made some bad plays. Coaches included. All 3 phases. We'll watch the film and try to correct the mistakes." It's boring as hell, but it just dumps helicopter tankers full of water on *any* possible lingering controversies.

Yeah, is this a thread to discuss the Steelers or a thread for Steelers fans?

That said, no one needs to be an a-hold.

I will admit to piling on, but that being said, I'm genuinely interested to hear from the Steelers fans with regard to the stuff Ben and Tomlin are saying today. We can discuss the catch reversal elsewhere, that is a more general topic.

It would have been fourth down. But they probably would have kicked the FG? Tomlin is a moron.
He had to hedge a bit there since his post-game comment on Sunday was, “We play and play to win. That's what we do."
