I'm having trouble with the 2 step authentication. I set it up about a month ago, but now it is not working, none of the codes given by the authenticator app work.

Yes, for SoSH. I can no longer log in on my computer or mobile browser. Using the app now as a last resort.

I can enter my username and password in a browser, then the screen pops up saying"two step verification required".

When I enter the code generated by the Google authenticator app, it gives me an error message that it cannot verify the code.

I can only log in via the SoSH app, because that only requires username and password. So I can't access my account settings, only the limited settings that are controllable via the SoSH app.

Alas, I believe they were lost when my previous phone died recently. I'm writing if there's a way to reset the whole thing. Unfortunately I can't get into my account to try anything.

In that case, I think you’re stuck unless you can generate some new backups from Google (this may be possible). Otherwise you’ll likely need Nip to nuke it for you if that’s possible. Next time put your backup codes in Dropbox, or better yet on a post it in a desk drawer.

I had this set up a few months ago and it worked fine at first, but my authenticator app stopped giving good codes (even after resetting the app, generating a new key, etc.). I was able to retrieve some of the manual backup codes from being logged into SOSH on my other computer. I PMed Nip and eventually just heard back that I should probably just turn it off for the time being.
