Cashman's motherlode of quality prospects acquired at the 2016 deadline, combined with an uptick in player development success at the minor league level, creates some interesting 40-man roster decisions over the next two seasons.
It is near time to cut bait on several current 40-man occupants who do not fit anymore: Chris Carter, Tyler Clippard, Chasen Shreve, Ronald Torreyes, and Mason Williams. Two are washed up veterans and the other three will be replaced by younger and more talented prospects.
But even if those five are set loose before January 2018, the Yanks have five prospects who might make the big club at some point next year -- Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, Chance Adams, Dustin Fowler and Tyler Wade.
This is not even counting any free agents or trade acquisitions that come to NY over the next year.
There are other prospects in the pipeline who might be two years away, including Miguel Andujar, Justus Sheffield and James Kaprielian.
So this is a good problem to have. Be interesting to follow the moves Cashman makes over the next year.
