The Tigers already fired Ausmus, so there's one.

The Mets and Collins are expected to part ways, though not official yet

After that, who gets the gate?

Snitker could get the boot in ATL, after a new permanent GM is brought in

Gibbons seems like a good bet if the Blue Jays really want to clean house

Would Jeter & Co dump Mattingly and pick their own guy?

Under-achievers are always a possibility -- Texas, St Louis, Seattle

Then there's the icon types coming off bad years -- Angels, Orioles

It wouldn't surprise me if Bochy retires in SF

That was the problem with hiring Baker. Did they really think he was going to last when they hired him in 2016?
$$$. Even though the Lerners are the wealthiest owners in mlb per Forbes. Google Bud Black fiasco.

And muddled thinking. Because if you're one of those stats geeks who thinks a manager should be just a robot with a pulse, you hire "go with my gut" Baker in no circumstances.

I don't know if I like the Nats' move. I guess it depends on who they bring in (duh).

I think Jayson Werth's departure will help the new guy, whoever it is. Werth ran Matt Williams out of town, which was a good thing, but he seems like the leader in the clubhouse of "let the guys do whatever they want" school of managing.

Dusty was fine in the regular season (and a great antidote to the Williams’ nonsense), but he never appeared to grasp the idea that he needed to do anything differently in the post season. Playing Werth in all five NLDS games (and batting him second in the last few games!) and leaving Gio in game 5 when he clearly had nothing were terrible managing decisions. I just hope they find someone a little less old school to replace him (thank goodness Gardenhire’s off the market).

I like Dusty a little more than most people, I think that he's a pretty good manager who despite not being a numbers guy, pretty much wins wherever he ends up. That's a valuable skill set.

But I think that this may have been his last shot. He's going to be 69-years-old and I'm not sure if anyone is going to turn over the reigns of a team to a dude pushing 70. He won 90+ games 10 times (two other times he won 88 and 89) and I think that if he got one World Series win, he'd be an outside candidate for the Hall of Fame. Especially if he took the Cubs to the World Series, holy crap.

To BH Kim's point, he never got the point that managing in the postseason is different than the regular season (though I suppose you can say that he tried that in Game 5 this year but it bit him in the ass when Max puked all over himself).

If Dusty ever got a ring on his finger as a skipper, he'd be a Hall of Famer. He's in the top dozen all time in wins, he's taken four different teams to the playoffs (and other than the Nats, I don't think of any of them were expected to contend), and I don't think there's a black MLB manager in the Hall. Robinson is there, but was obviously elected as a player.

He's no tactical genius, but he's clearly evolved as a manager. He doesn't ride pitchers anywhere near as hard as he used to - I think one Red appeared in the top 10-20 of Pitcher Abuse Points in Dusty's whole tenure there. He sure as shit didn't ride Max Scherzer when he took him out after 98 pitches.

And he's had bad luck. There's no way people see him as bumbling fool Dusty Baker if the Giants hold on to a lead in 2002 and Alex Gonzalez doesn't boot a double play grounder in 2003. Those things weren't his fault.

He's also a profoundly decent person.

Not a managerial change but figure it's the place for coaching changes too. Chris Bosio was fired this morning as Cubs pitching coach. I would figure that Jim Hickey will be rejoining Joe Maddon in Chicago.

+1.

He also correctly noted that this was perhaps his best season managing. It's sad.

Making it worse, they left him hanging at the end, which was Dusty's only complaint. The only decent explanation for that would be if Rizzo spent the last week fighting for Dusty.

I forget where I read it, but apparently it was an ownership decision to let Dusty go. So that's probably what happened.

The Lerner family wrote a letter to the fans that was posted on the teams website that certainly implies that.
Even though this ultimately wasn’t our season, we remain devoted to that cause. In further pursuit of that goal, we have decided to make a change in leadership and begin the process of finding a new manager. This was an incredibly difficult decision for us. Dusty Baker led the team to the first back-to-back division titles in our history and represented our club with class on and off the field. He is one of the true gentleman in our sport, and we thank him for the successes that we enjoyed together over the last two years. We wish him nothing but the best going forward.

Can someone provide thoughts on Giradi situation in NY. I know his contract has expired. My sense is that everyone is being non-committal.

Why? Thanks in advance.

You'd think someone would have said something publicly, but this is all i found

Joe Girardi left no question that he wants to return to the #Yankees, and they want him. The Yankees will be World Series champs by 2019

He always asks his family if they want him to keep going, he said it is a very quick process, basically a vote, and it will happen this week.

Also Cashman’s contract is up, so presumably he needs to be resigned first.

Thanks, makes sense that you sign the GM first.

There are pipe dreams about Giradi in Washington, and even wilder ones about Showalter (who is under contract for another year along with Duquette, and there is no greater enmity in mlb than that between Lerner and Angelos).

I don't think any established manager with a solid track record comes anywhere near the D.C. without ownership coming to the table with a market rate contract and an extension of Mike Rizzo.

I get it but Grady Little was fired after winning 93 and 95 games. And frankly Baker left himself open to some serious second guessing with his usage of inferior arms like Solis and Perez in high leverage situations (as an aside Girardi royally screwed as well up by not using Chapman in the fifth inning and relying on someone who had only 70 innings of quality pitching in his career).

Edit: No arguing that the way he was fired was shoddy though.

Does Callaway to New York leave a Farrell-sized hole in Cleveland? I haven't heard anything linking him to any of the manager openings.

Great story on National's situation after wiping out entire coaching staff!

In the hours after Baker’s departure became official, Rizzo told reporters his next coaching staff would be “a team decision.”
“The manager obviously will have a great impact and great input on who we hire, always,” Rizzo said. “But it’ll be a group, team decision for the betterment of the organization.”

Thanks for posting. As the article states, Nats hired Mike Maddox as pitching coach before hiring Baker. Maddux has been good and he may stay. I hope so.
