They also threw the book at Michigan. Obviously Michigan is not a top tier athletic program but they do have a lot of fans.

The two situations are not remotely comparable.

At Michigan, boosters (a single booster, really) was paying for players to enroll. At UNC, the entire athletics department was participating in academic fraud for two decades.

I'm not going to ruin a UNC thread any longer, so I'll just confirm my disagreement and leave the last word to you.

No, they weren't. You have read headlines and not the substance. The entire athletics department was not participating in academic fraud for any length of time.

Michigan's situation is very similar in that it was individuals ruining the reputation of the school and not systemic.

Last NCAA championship in 1989; last football championship in 1997 (and before that 1948).

That's not a top tier athletic program in either sport. A splashy one, for sure. They have an upcoming Amazon Prime show but not on the court or field.

National Champion and Final Four MVP Joel Berry out four weeks with a broken hand. Tough way to start the season obviously but if it truly is only four weeks then he only misses two cupcake games. Broken hand can spell trouble though, shots can get fucked up and I'm honestly surprised it's only four weeks. I really hope he has a healthy year so he can get the best shot at the NBA.

Seventh Woods and Jalek Felton will need to step up.

Here is the list of programs that have won a football championship and a basketball championship since 1989:

Michigan, Florida.

Edit, but to be fair:

UNC has won MULTIPLE basketball titles AND they are really good at video games

Duke once again showing the college basketball world how to win in November --- this will be their second straight year ranked #1 to start the season.

Wendell Carter, one of Duke's heralded Freshmen in the most historic freshmen class since last year's, after beating Bowie State 116-53, announced that Duke should finish the season undefeated.

It is all really reminiscent of last year. Duke just really shows up this time of year.

Not often that when your dream season gets wrecked by injury you get another shot at it the very next year.

But I'm not sure what you're talking about this year being reminiscent of last - last year Duke was all concerned about the injuries. By this time last year the DBR threads were full of speculation as to:
a) whether Giles' unexpected scoping of his rehabbed knee would keep him out past Christmas
b) how serious Tatum's injury was
c) how serious Bolden's injury was
and d) whether Jefferson was fully healed from his last season's injury

I may be missing one or two others,

This year the team is completely healthy and the talk is about whether the freshmen can gel and live up to their potential.

I agree. I am just reminded that this time last year we, including posters in this thread, were discussing the possibility of an undefeated season. And now, the players on the latest squad are doing it again.

Do I think this year they will lose in the second round to South Carolina and then watch UNC win the National Championship? No. But it's a reminder about these preseason expectations --- you just never know with kids this young that are really entirely (and properly) focused on this as a gap year before the real important basketball starts.

Nah, not at this time last year. Maybe 3 months ago last year, but by this time last year 4/5ths of the starting lineup was hurt, some quite seriously.

I went back and checked the thread and you are right. It was a few months before now. This time last year posters were decrying, once again, Roy's inability to recruit and the barren team that he was about to start coaching for 16/17.

You, in particular, were suggesting it was time for a new Coach. Glad they didn't take your advice so he could win his third Title since returning home.

I would wager a fat sum any comments here on Ol' Roy were mirrored identically on Inside Carolina, so...

Ready to move on after losing in the National Title game on a last second shot?

Weird take
"Depending on who leaves and as long as Roy remains the boss, UNC basketball is dead being any kind of competitive after this year, so I'll enjoy one final team that has an outside shot at a title.

And yes, it's way more on Roy than the "scandal.""

Obviously I'm thrilled about last year but now that Roy's got himself a bit of a post-title grace period and the NCAA cloud has moved on, recruiting needs to improve, especially on the interior, and the record against Duke has to get better.

Some will say it doesn't matter as long as they stick in the tourney longer, but that's hogwash. You can't let your #1 rival lord over you the way it has been lately.

I bet he was dared to say that by a mate or something. I'm not too worried that K will suddenly lose the ability to have his players focus on the task at-hand.

The really interesting thing to follow, esp. with the Celtics having a pontential high-lottery pick this year, is whether Marvin Bagley can live up to the hype. I'm starting to love this Devils-Celtics link that's starting to develop and someone like that could put things on a higher level still.

It will all come full circle when Stevens takes over Duke in 7 years after winning several NBA titles with the Celts.

(I hope this never happens, I want him to be the Celts coach for the next 30 years)

Don't forget the game that put both Brad Stevens and Gordon Hayward on the map was the 2010 championship game against Duke as well. There are tons of links here beyond Kyrie/Tatum/Semi (who was at Duke for two years don't forget)

Duke gets next year's #1 overall player R.J. Barrett. They absolutely crush this time of year.

Very excited to see him in college. Wonder who got recruited over?

We're still holding out hope for like the 16th ranked guy. Love the 3 and dones, much easier to build a championship (imo). But the 1&dones Duke gets are hella fun to watch while they are there.

They'll probably take my Tar Heel card away but there's a small part of me that likes Grayson Allen.

The kid can no doubt hoop and he plays the heel so well I just laugh sometimes. Like a modern day Laimbeer.

Super weird to see Duke dominate MSU on the glass. 25 offensive rebounds against them is like unheard of.

Stone cold killer Grayson is fun. Like JJ was. Coward shrink from the moment Grayson is not fun. Maybe he was just hurt all of last year, but he looks like a different guy.

By my count, Duke has somewhere between 29-38 remaining games, depending how far they advance in their Portland tournament, the ACC Tournament, and the NCAA tournament. Going conservative and assuming 1 win in each of those, that makes 32 games left. Chances are it will be higher. But call it 32 for this exercise.

Grayson Allen now has 1501 career points. To get to the following milestones he would have to average:
#10 all time - Scheyer - 2077 - 18 ppg
#8 T - Banks / JWill - 2079 - 18.06 ppg
#7 Alaire - 2136 - 19.84 ppg
#6 Ferry - 2155 - 20.44 ppg
#5 Gminski - 2323 - 25.69
#4 Singler - 2392 - 27.84

Outside chance, but he may end up top 5 all time on the Duke scoring list.

Or like almost every white Duke player. Hurley, laettner, reddick, Wojo (hit the floor again), Paulus, Ferry, Bilas (he’s ok but does he really need to do every unc/Duke game?) etc. I know there are a lot more... but Duke has more than their fair share of punchable faced team players that can play and aggravate the crap out of anyone that isn’t a blue devil.

Wrong thread but I'd like to see the C's draft a big and with Bagley, Ayton and Bamba in the draft (as well as Doncic and Porter tempting teams that need a wing more) the chances are pretty decent that they'll get a really good one if the Lakers' pick is in the #2 to #5 range.

Currently 538 has them finishing with the 7th worst record in the league ... which would be bad for the Celtics. Under the rules of the draft, the 7th position would give them just a 10.7% chance of drawing the 2nd - 5th pick. Ideally, they would finish as the 2nd to 4th worst record in the league:

Code:
Seed Odds of #1 Pick Odds of #2 - #5 Pick
  1 25.0% 75.0%
  2 19.9% 80.1%
  3 15.6% 80.4%
  4 11.9% 70.9%
  5 8.8% 46.5%
  6 6.3% 15.2%
  7 4.3% 10.7%
  8 2.8% 7.2%
  9 1.7% 4.4%
 10 1.1% 2.9%
 11 0.8% 2.1%
 12 0.7% 1.8%
 13 0.6% 1.6%
 14 0.5% 1.3%
Again, sorry for going off-topic but didn't want to search for the right thread and then create the context for this post - seemed like it flowed with this convo.

edit - had it as #2 - #6 conveys initially. Fixed to #2 - #5 and corrected odds
