So basically the majority of the participants in 98 mile are recipients of Dr. Robert Leonard hair transplants like Fred. *Yawn*

Sent from my SM-G900V using SoSH mobile app
As there's 4 total people in Dr. Robert Leonard promos and there's 10 people in this, it's not a majority. Obviously they took advantage of them being there last week, which they should have. I am expecting they saved the best people for the last half of the 10.

I think 98 mile has been really hit or miss, but 70% hit, 30% hit (the ones with Scal and Welker were really bad). But it's the middle of the summer with nothing to talk about but Pats training camp and Sox games 86-100. It'd be nice if they came up with a new bit to cover 3 weeks of nothing, but not surprised they haven't / can't.

I'd rather listen to bad 98 mile raps than Kirk mocking people who cover the MLS because they suck at life and are losers, unlike King of Boston Sports Media from June 1-June 30.

Edit: WTF was with that guy who keeps emailing Rich and called 6 times today? If i was T&R I'd be worried about that guy stabbing you on the street randomly and not joking around with him. Guy's batshit crazy.

There's more Dr. Leonard patients than the 4 (Gronkowski, Welker, Ninkovich & Vollmer) from those commercials. Scal and Tom E. Curran has commercials on CSN promoting Dr. Leonard. Other notable Boston personalities are Tom Caron, Rob "Hardy" Poole, David Portnoy, Mike Adams (formerly of EEI). I'm not saying these guys are locks to appear in 98 mile but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Why does it matter?
Speaking for myself it makes 98 mile predictable as Fred & Rich hype each guest to be some unknown blockbuster entrant. If they're just shuffling out Dr. Leonard's patients, it's not a draw for me to tune in to find out who's in the competition. But then again, as others have stated, I've lost interest in this competition for some of the reasons already mentioned.

today I learned Scott Zolak was a backup QB and didn't play a lot. And he's loud and arrogant

But I will give it to Pete Frates, who's rap was done by his brother....

Fred about to strike back at EEI this week? Huge Twitter "war" with Rob Bradford over "sources" re: Pedroia and Sox this weekend has been entertaining.

I'd love to hear Kirk and Fred on a live podcast. My guess is Kirk would not win that battle. Fred's been at this much longer, has way thicker skin and really doesn't give a shit about the nonsense Kirk plays in his character. Fred also seems to understand how unimportant sports radio is and his much of a joke the whole thing is.

So Celebrity 98 Mile isn't a tournament? Sounds like they are just going to crown whoever received the most total votes and call it a day.

I haven't laughed as hard at T&R in a while than I did at the "guess how they kill of Kevin's wife in Kevin Can Wait' segment.

She’s dying of a heart attack and kevin goes to call 911 but his fingers are too slippery from the movie popcorn! Not Just your Ordinary...

Or that she was taken hostage and killed because Kevin had just spent the ransom money on a new TV to watch the big game!

Your guess is as good as any. I think because they've had trouble wrangling all the celebrities - the Big Bang Clock being Exhibit A - I doubt they've got an "end" worked out. Getting all these participants organized has been a huge undertaking in and of itself.

Rich - yet again - has proven himself to be the best content creator in Boston radio; his production work on all these, but especially the Gorman/Heinsohn entry, has been superlative.

They've said since the start it isn't a bracket. All 12 get $1k donated to charity and whoever wins gets another $10k donated.

Rich said the other day the rapper they have on, who's name I forget, heard Gorman's and he actually went back and changed his, because of how good Gorman's was. And Rich encouraged people to keep on voting, even for the "winners" since the contest hasn't really ended yet

Sara Underwood (wife of Felger) vs. The Big Bang Clock (Brandon Meriweather) tomorrow.

Mrs. Felger is bringing the wood. I have no doubt she is going up one side and down the other on everyone's favorite Nantucket contrarian. Added bonus: His repeated trashing of 98 Mile in general, and that he outsourced his writing to Mike From Attleboro last time he participated. Fred and John were GIDDY over her inclusion.

TL;DR

Felger participated in the 1st ever 98 mile. He was then put off on how Fred reacted to it and ragged on him so he said he'd never do it again. Fred didn't realize Felger held a grudge this whole time (5 years) but it all came back around when Felger's wife participated the other day and Felger started in how he "doesn't hate the bit but hates participating in it." Fred would comment in the morning, Felger would retort in the afternoon. It came up again this morning and Felger called in. They talked in circles and resolved nothing.

wait wait wait, Jim Murray is all upset that someone was making fun of him in a 98 mile rap? Big tough guy Jim Murray? Awwww. Poor guy. Did someone hurt the little man's feelings? Would it have been better if it had been done in his voice? That's okay, right Jim? Tough guy?
Felger doesn't like the bit when he's the target? Funny how that happens. Why are you so upset about this Felger? Just get over it right?

I haven't listened regularly in months so I wasn't exactly sure what was going on but I saw on twitter that Felger called in so I turned it on. What a baby he was being. I still don't get his complaint. He was mad Fred was making fun of him about not doing it? But then said he wasn't mad? But still called in?

Funny how Entercom takes over and now 98.5 is turning into WEEI with the forced media drama. Lowest common denominator.

Merger hasn't gone through yet, but your point stands. Jason Wolfe said the other day he wouldn't be surprised if the full merger happens, specifically in Boston. There's a good chance Entercom would have to choose between selling off 98.5 or WEEI and it wouldn't be an easy decision.

Really? I'll admit that I don't know the much about the economics of radio but 98.5 has pretty consistently won the ratings battle (and even in the periods where they haven't, it's been close) plus they hold the broadcast rights to 3 of the 4 local franchises. (4 of 5 if you count the Revs) Seems like that's the one to hold on to.

It won't be a matter of keep WEEI or keep the Sports Hub in terms of programming though. If they're looking to sell off one of the stations, it's very likely they'd merge the on-air rosters (culling out the weak links), keep all the game rights, and put them all on one signal while selling the other.

Don't forget that while the Hub has been the ratings leader in Boston, WEEI still syndicates to a bunch of stations around New England. Both properties are valuable for different reasons.

I'm not a Sherman Act expert, but that doesn't seem to be likely solution. The DOJ may force a sale because all market competition for major professional sports broadcast radio advertising will be eliminated if this sale goes through. I don't think the DOJ will be satisfied with the solution of selling one frequency and call sign, but keeping everything else. Here's what Jason Wolfe wrote about the merger:

I worked for Entercom for 14 years and I can tell you that no group owner has more passion for sports and sports radio than David Field, but before the DOJ renders its decision, the many legitimate questions it is asking will continue to provoke conversation about the prospect of the new company having so much control over sports content in this market. The assets of 98.5 and WEEI, combined with the play by play rights to all four professional teams could not only be perceived by some as an advantage when it comes to creating advertising revenue, but also as a flat out stranglehold on all sports media dollars. I’m told that the DOJ likens this situation to Entercom’s recent purchase of Lincoln Financial Media. At the time that deal was announced, Denver was the market in question for the DOJ. Entercom had an exceptionally well performing cluster there as did Lincoln Financial. In its competitive impact statement, the DOJ wrote that “The Complaint alleges that the proposed acquisition likely would lessen competition substantially in interstate trade and commerce, in violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. § 18, and likely would have the following effects, among others: a) competition in the sale of broadcast radio advertising on English-language radio stations in the Denver MSA would be lessened substantially; b) competition between Entercom broadcast radio stations and Lincoln broadcast radio stations in the sale of broadcast radio advertising in the Denver MSA would be eliminated; and c) the prices for advertising time on English-language broadcast radio stations in the Denver MSA likely would increase.”
http://dirtywatermedia.com/weei-and-98-5-may-not-be-bedfellows-after-all/

The most likely scenarios are that Entercom will operate both stations or be forced to sell one of the two.

I listened to the whole thing. It was embarrassing -- sounded like he had marbles in his mouth trying to explain his reasoning. Then when confronted about his false claims about the Pats in his column today about the Sox stealing signs he essentially said: "Sorry I'm not a football expert." He came across as a bitter, irrational hater. I've lost a lot respect for him.

His argument in favor of a historic and unprecedented (by orders of magnitude) punishment was that he didn't like cheating. It turns out cheating is bad people, so don't do it.

What always amuses me when people rant about twitter/facebook/etc is that you are literally in control of what you are seeing. If you don't like something just don't follow it. Or block/ignore it.
If your feed is miserable it's due in large part because that's who YOU are choosing to follow and interact with.

While I agree with the sentiment. This is kind of only partially true though. People I have chosen to not follow still show up in my feed if someone I chose to follow likes or retweets their posts.

True. Also in this case, and many others, a dispute erupts in social media that then has spilled outside of it. So you can avoid the initial Twitter fight, but it’s harder to avoid the news it generates.

Happy birthday Waldick! This was the first time I heard the Shazowies commercial. Almost as funny as the time they had Adam12 read the spot for the church of Scientology.

The Meriweather interview today about the strip clubs was funny too.

Hearing Meriweather sigh and respond with, "Ok guy," after Fred's quip about the flat brimmed hats was great. He is a good interview, and his timing on the jokes is usually on point.

I liked the Western CT announcer thing the first time, but what is it now? 5 times? 6?

Even if it was adults it wouldn't be funny anymore, but this is 19 and 20 year old kids they are making fun of, over and over.

Yeah, the bit has definitely run its course.
