Stanton goes deep again. 44 HRs now. 11 in 14 games this month. Homers in 5 in a row. Tonight he crushed one off of Madbum. He has 7 Xbh in 20 at bats vs him in his career.
He's homered in 6 games in a row. The record is 8 held by Griffey Jr and a few others.

Most home runs over a 35 game-span:
1998 #Cubs Sammy Sosa - 25
2001 #SFGiants Barry Bonds - 24
2017 #Marlins Giancarlo Stanton - 23
Funny, I've been thinking that Stanton's hot streak reminds me of Sosa's 20 home run June in 1998. Since the media (and general public) no longer cares about historic home runs totals due to PEDs, I wonder how long this run will need to go before it becomes a big story.

I think in the last couple days it's become a big baseball story. Can't see it ever getting to the national attention the Sosa/McGwire battle received.

Oakland over KC tonight 4-3 after 7, KC scored 5 in the top of the 8th to go up 8-4 in a game they could really use, but then Soria and Minor gave up 6 in the bottom of the inning, so 10-8 Oakland after 8. Treinen is trying to close now and is up to 28 pitches, two outs to go.

Oakland holds on, the second AL wild card continues to tighten.

Did you all see Maddon put 4 outfielders out there last night vs. Votto?
Are there any actual restraints to where you place your fielders? Other than pitcher and catcher, can you just put the other 7 wherever you want?

That's Treinen.

That's not.

No homeruns for Stanton today. He's toast. Pace falls to just under 60 hr.

Unless the box score is lying to me, it looks like John Lackey stole a base tonight. Right up there with Lester homering in terms of things I wouldn't expect to see.

Then Lackey got picked off wandering too far off 2nd after the batter walked.

In case you don't read the Sox game thread. First pitch hits camera man in the crotch.

Jered Weaver retired today. Whose fastball will we make fun of now?

The Mets had a shortage of healthy infielders last night, so they used Travis D'Arnaud at 3B and switched him with Cabrera at 2B depending on whether a lefty or righty batter was up, to try to protect D'Arnaud from balls being pulled hard in his direction. Not so exciting, but it did lead to this hysterical box score:

California. Duh.
The Red Sox weren't the only team to enter the bottom of the 9th inning down 4-2 and end up winning 5-4 on a walkoff double by the right fielder last night. The Dodgers and Puig pulled it off as well.

This Cubs-Reds game is nuts. Lester spots Reds nine runs in the second but Cubs hit four HRs in the fourth and six overall and have tied it up, still batting in the fifth.

Reds pull out the win, 13 to 10. 1894, 1961 and today, the three times the Reds allowed 6 homers and won.

Lester left with a lat strain in the Cubs-Reds brouhaha. I was among those who thought Chicago would pull away once it overtook Milwaukee. Might still happen, but they're not doing it now

Don't forget about St Louis either; the Sox just did some damage but this month they've been making a strong run at first.

Jay Bruce with a 2-homer, 5-rbi night for the Indians. In 9 games with Cleveland: .419/.500/.839 (9 runs, 11 rbi).

Cory Kluber left that game early with a twisted ankle. It doesn't look serious, but it did end his streak of 14 consecutive games with 8+ strikeouts. An 8 strikeout night would have tied the all-time record in a single season held by Randy Johnson (who actually did it twice). Pedro Martinez is the only person to do it 15 consecutive games, although his streak stretched across two seasons.

That summer of McGwire and Sosa was something else. I have fond memories of watching highlights every night and they would have Boomer show every at bat and tease homers like it was a home run derby.

It started to pour early on in the STL/PIT game, and it was really coming down with Kuhl pitching to Grichuk in the second. Inside fastball that was called a ball to make it 2-2 was the last pitch before the tarp came on, and two hours later the two guys came back to finish the same AB, next pitch was a FB over the outside corner, so a two hour AB ended with a K.

Pirates v Cardinals tonight is in Williamsport at the LLWS facility. That's really cool and I don't remember them doing this before.

Is it new or have I been living in a hole?

I don't recall it before. But it is at the A league team's stadium (Bowman) not the LLWS (Volunteer and Lamade) stadiums. The LLWs stadiums have tiny diamonds and short fences.

They are interestingly letting the players have more liberty with unis and bats to add some flair for this game to make it more 'like little league.' Too bad they didn't allow aluminum bats...

I don't remember it either. Pretty cool for the little kids. Makes them feel special. They are.

What a bitch Gary Sanchez is. Trying to sucker punch a player on the ground. Hope he gets a long suspension.

Betances should be gone for a LONG time. Intentionally hitting a player in the head with a 100mph fastball?

This will be worth watching the highlights on. Betances and Sanchez look ripe for longish suspensions - as does miggy.

No way did Betances hit McCann on purpose. He's prone to wildness.

BUT...that's a consequence of throwing at/behind hitters intentionally earlier in the game. You lose the benefit of the doubt. Robertson should have been tossed, too.

This game just underlines how titanically stupid the notion of retaliation or "sending a message" or "protecting" one's teammates is. There's simply no reason for it at all.

The Yankees are going to be in deep shit when Romine and Sanchez get suspended for their roles. They don't have a healthy third catcher on the 40-man right now. They're going to be forced into a roster move by these shenanigans.
