Bumped into a Brady at 40 in Asia piece as part of an E:60 show this AM on ESPN2. Couldn't find it in the listings (SportsCenter was listed as being on the air). I missed the first five minutes of what was a 15-20 minute piece of a 60 minute show. I'm sure it will appear again and again on the networks, but it's not listed as one of the episodes in Comcast's onscreen guide

Wasn't Belichick also HC of the NYJ after Parcells left NE and before the compensation was worked out to let him be the HC?

Apart from that one day, I don't think so. After BB resigned, he wasn't HC of any team. He couldn't become HC of any team other than the Jets until/unless the Jets gave permission (with or without compensation), I believe. During the interim, he was unemployed, I guess.

Sorry. Poorly written. Parcells quit the Pats to be President of the NYJ. (Edit:he was under contract with NEP and couldn't be HC of NYJ without being released from that contract). I am pretty sure they said Belichick was going to be or in fact was HC of the NYJ. But of course the compensation for Parcells worked out and Parcells took over as HC and Belichick became D.C./HC-in-waiting.

Edit2: so I THINK Belichick was HC of the NYJ both before and after Parcells.

That's hilarious.

'A lot of teams don't get that day...for one fabulous day, the Jets were the preeminent team in the National Football League'
But it was a chimera, and BB instantly recognized it as such. No-win situation, period. Best case, the Jets somehow succeed against all odds, and Parcells remains the Sun King because his ego would admit no equal place at the table for anybody else. Worse case -- and the highly probable case -- the Jets flame out and BB is the fall guy. BB knew the owner was an amiable dunce and faux tough guy. And he knew that Parcells personnel chops were vastly inflated -- witness Dallas and, especially, Miami -- and that the task was therefore equivalent to rolling a two-ton boulder up a hill.

So BB bet on himself and won. Better to look like an idiot for 2 minutes and become GOAT over 2 decades than win the praises of Francesa and be gone in two years.

New York/Jersey wiseguy shit also is vastly overrated, which partially explains why NY/NJ wiseguys are no longer.

would you mind defining "New York/Jersey wiseguy shit", in this context? Do you just mean Parcells trying to do an end-run around the "no hiring away a coach under contract" rule?

The owners didn't exist. The Hesses were selling the team, and Woody Johnson bought it two weeks after Belichick quit.

My understanding is that after the Cleveland debacle, Belichick had zero interest in entering an uncertain ownership situation again. He knew Kraft from his year in NE. NYJ ownership was unsettled. I don't think he was crazy about being in Parcells' shadow, but what was happening at the top of the organization was at least as important from what I can tell.

Exactly. He said as much in his press conference which was highlighted in the above video. I remember seeing BB and Kraft together previous to the hiring of Carroll. I thought it was going to happen then.

And Woody has proved to be what, if not an amiable dunce and faux tough guy?

To be sure, there was no proof of it at the time, but BB wasn't taking the chance. Just as Parcells did not take the chance -- he elevated himself and found a fall guy in Al Groh, if memory serves.

Parcells himself admitted to this later in his memoirs, albeit in a different context. He acknowledged being a restless soul forever ISO greener grass. He pleaded guilty to "Hamlet like endings." And you know what he attributed his crash landing in Miami to? A "neophyte owner". In other words, what he tried to foist on BB in NY.

The NFL has never known a better turnaround artist than Bill Parcells; he proved it too many times in too many places. And as a game coach, he consistently got the better of Joe Jackson Gibbs, who was about as good as you can get.

But with Parcells, fealty and accolades were supposed to run mainly in one direction. His. That was the case with owners and subordinates too.

So to answer Instaface's question, yes this son of Englewood proved it in many places, but mainly with the NJ Jets. With that head coaching ruse with BB that Tagliabue did not buy for a second. And with the effort to test run Woody as owner with a BB/Al Groh stand-in.

BB, of course, had a front row seat to this stuff.

As lore has it, it was the fateful conversation btwn Kraft and BB on the plane ride back from the losing SB in New Orleans that sealed their relationship. Kraft has said he wasn't prepared to hire BB right then given the Parcells situation and their relationship. But he wouldn't be denied later when he let Carroll go.

Watching $100,000 Pyramid. Contestant from LI and she's wearing the brightest shade of green.

Clue she gives: "It's a football team . . . they win all the time"

Gift that keeps giving.

I just want to know how being in the Super Bowl 4 times qualifies him to say that he was busy that day most of his life.

Peyton Manning the personality has always been really enjoyable ("cut that meat....") I like that guy

Peyton Manning the QB is an all-time great, and yet still likely somewhat overrated. I don't like that guy

He's a fine actor. It shows in his commercials, TV appearances, and scripted public statements after games. Further evidence can be found in the fact that most of the country buys the "aw shucks Opie Cunningham" thing and doesn't buy the "teabag and lawyer-whip the trainer" thing or the HGH thing. He has it pretty good.

Hate to say it, but he killed it, especially in the taped clips.

That's hilarious. I do appreciate how he can make fun of himself. I expected a repeat of his old United Way SNL skit where he's playing football with the kids. I thought somewhere in that video they'd be out playing football and he'd drill one of the old folks in the back of the head with the ball.

If there's one thing we know for sure, it's Peyton Manning is an expert at needling himself.

That might be unfair to Bradshaw as I dont think he was ever a dink to a trainer. He did mention a Bucket of chicken and Reggie Bush so maybe.

ESPN poll: Tom Brady is the GOAT: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20096209/nfl-coaches-execs-rank-best-quarterbacks-modern-era-2017

Although, if you look at the illustration, EPSN has Peyton as more prominent, even though he finished 2nd. Expert trolling for the dude as usual.

Tony Dungy, Hall of Fame coach who debuted in the NFL as a player in 1977: It can be tough to separate the great quarterback from the great coach. We have seen this in every era: Otto Graham and Paul Brown, Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi, Johnny Unitas and Don Shula/Weeb Ewbank, Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll, Joe Montana/Steve Young and Bill Walsh, Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy. I don't think Bill Belichick would be Bill Belichick without Tom Brady, and Brady would not have the same success without Belichick and the way they have put that team together. But the one common thread through 15 years was Brady. When they had him, they won big -- won championships. The quarterback has so much to do with it.

Super Bowl LI: Upon Further Review is on NFL network at 10pm EST tonight. It says it's a new program and has "facts and figures you may not have known." I know nothing else about it, but any new material on LI is a must watch for me so I'll be checking it out.

I caught the beginning and learned that Rutgers with 5 players was the most represented college in the game.

Watching the AFCCG, man I forgot that hogan went bananas.
Two of my coworkers are Steelers fans. I probably got two months worth of zone defense jokes out of that one game resulting in multiple books, pens, etc. getting slammed to the ground.

Mike Tomlin is also a gift that keeps giving.

I don't normally agree with anything Dungy says, but if he is trying to argue that Manning should be ranked higher because Brady had Belichick and Manning was saddled with Dungy; that's a reasonable take

It is available on demand on my cable provider, Spectrum. It is certainly worth checking to see if that is true of others.

Did you see it? What was it? Unfortunately, I don't see that NFLN has it scheduled again.

It was as if the whole defensive backfield was in on a work; they were just trying to make it LOOK like they were trying to cover guys, but secretly wanted to leave them completely uncovered. Bizarre.

I think it was in the game thread that someone commented on Hogan using the cloak of invisibility.
