Ryan Hanigan got the first hit off of Fernando Rodney in over a month, yesterday, and scored the first run off of him as well.

He is hitting.260 for the Rockies who just called him back up from the minors on Sunday

I remember him being plugged into the middle of the order in the final series in Baltimore in a desperate attempt to save the 2011 season (he homered twice in game 161 I believe). What happened to the power he showed for a couple years there?

Yes, he did. However, not only those were his only two home runs with the Sox that season ... they were his only hits that September in 16 at bats

Lavarnway wound up with 5 home runs with the sox between 2001 and 10 hitless at-bats in 2014

Miami (oh, Miami!)
He was an odd one. He crushed MiL pitching up to his age 23/2012 season, but was not considered a strong defensive catcher. He was fine (offensively) for Boston as a spot replacement in 2013. In 2014, his last option year, he was converted to a 1B, but was injured (fractured wrist/concussion). He was claimed off waivers. In 2015 he was decent for Atlanta and very good at AAA. He spent all of 2016 in the minors with mediocre offensive results.

In retrospect the Sox didn't miss out on anything, but I wonder how his bat would have coped if they went for the 1B conversion earlier, or if he got a solid year to develop against major league pitching. His major block of MLB time was in the 2012, post-Punto trade, Bobby Valentine dumpster fire.

If you really want to cherry pick, from 8.24.11 to 8.7.12 he had 21 PAs, and all he hit were those two home runs. (To be fair, there was a walk and a sac fly in there.)

More notably, he and Breslow formed the first all-Yale/all-Jew battery in Sox history.

Sorry if this is elsewhere and I missed it. Francona has had a cardiac ablation.
http://nypost.com/2017/07/07/terry-francona-has-heart-surgery/
CLEVELAND — Indians manager Terry Francona underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat that sidelined him for a few games and will keep him away from the All-Star Game next week.

The 58-year-old Francona, who had been experiencing dizziness, fatigue and a rapid heart rate over the last month, had a cardiac ablation performed on Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic.

Francona has been hospitalized and undergoing tests since Tuesday, when he was admitted after doctors detected an arrhythmia when reading a monitor the manager has been wearing for several weeks.

The Indians said Friday that Francona is resting comfortably in the hospital and is expected to be discharged in a “day or two.”

His health will prevent him from managing the American League squad in Miami next week. Indians bench coach Brad Mills, who has been filling in while Francona has been ill, will likely manage the AL team, which includes five Cleveland players.

Nick Longhi is off to a good start on his new team. Hitting .316/.409/.526 in his first 22 PA. 1 HR, 3bb/5k.

Since June 7th: 25 games, 95 PA, .326/.383/.581 with 10 doubles and 4 HRs. It'll be interesting to see if the power spike is real given he is only 21 years old.

4 K's for Moncada today. Has being fed a steady diet of offspeed pitches that he can't touch. DD did a great job selling high on him. Wouldn't surprise me if he is Buxton redux. Both guys are still obviously very young but sometimes that pitch recognition never develops.

Honest question:

Do major league teams have their starters face their prospects during side sessions? Or do they never really face major league pitching until they reach the show?

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like the gap between minor league pitching and major league pitching—even fourth or fifth starter types—is pretty substantial.

They do, but it's not like those starters are in top form in spring training, at least compared to mid-season.

In the midst of the Devers talk once his call-up was announced was this tidbit from PeteAbe saying that Porcello considered Devers a "pain in the ass" when he faced him in spring training.

Travis Shaw hits his 22nd home run tonight. He is slugging .574. It is July 22nd and Shaw has not yet turned into a pumpkin.
Make that 23 home runs, now with a .943 OPS. I know he struggled mightily in the second half but he was great the first couple months last year, and the power sure looked legit. This is looking like a pretty serious blunder by DD.

He needs to never retire

"Then the second umpire came down and he told me I need to move. I told Gerry - I have no problem but I don't want to get hit. I've been hit when I stand over there. He said, 'Well I don't' care. You need to be on top of the mat.' So I pulled the mat where I was at and he threw me out."

(For the record, it was 18-6 in the bottom of the 8th when Gerry Davis decided that's what he needed to spend some time worrying about)

I hope the Rangers put the circle behind home plate tonight.

In 30 at-bats, Yoan Moncada has four hits -- a single, double, triple and home run

Beltre hit a double for #3000. Why can't the Red Sox get third basemen like that?

I can't wait for his HoF speech. Pedro must sneak up behind him at the end and rub his head.

PS: Devers is going to be a stud.
