Well, at least for them it is reportedly over now.

Still feels kinda weird reading about that and it not being our problem anymore though.
Sad. He is really a great guy but I get it. It's a results business and he's been shitting the bed for awhile.

I didn't know he got injured when I was watching the game; was at the bar with the sound down. I definitely don't wish injury on anyone, but man am I glad we didn't keep him. Even more so now that it looks like he's out for the entire season.

Lots of people made semi-coherent arguments for why trading Clay was a bad idea, but I just could not get on board with that. He was so utterly unreliable for so long that the upside just didn't see worth it. He was a baller in 2013 and a number of other times, but I for one am very glad the Buchholz experience in Boston is over.

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere, but Manny's debut with Kochi was 'scoped and you can see it here:
https://www.pscp.tv/w/1jMKgYQRNYkJL
He bats leadoff and his first at-bat is around the 40 minute mark.

As someone who has been there many times with inlaws near Kochi I find it kind of funny Manny is relegated to an independent league on Shikoku - it's very beautiful, but if you are a city boy from New York I imagine it's extremely dull. I thought for some reason he signed with a Pacific or Central League team.

Moncada is off to a hot start. .387/.457/.613 in 35 PA with 2 HRs and 2 sbs. He has 4bb/10k, so strike outs are still an issue.

Also not surprised with Margot. He's the exact type of prospect you would expect to make a smooth transition since he's a low K% guy.

And the lesser Basabe is building off a strong year last season with a similar start this year. .316/.381/.474 with a HR.

Do any of the stat sites have a function where you can assemble a list of (former sox) players that automatically updates? It would be great to have a one click link to see what's going on with the gang.
Fangraphs allows you to create custom reports with your own list of players on the leaderboard pages

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2017&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0

(At the bottom of the page - create the custom list and save as a custom report).

BUT - MLB only, no minor league stuff (you can't even select minor league players who've never made the majors). So it only does a partial job.

You can create a minor league list if first click on one of the minor league leaderboards (i.e., AAA - International) then assemble players from there.

The annoyance is you have to maintain two separate lists -- one for MLB players, one for MiLB players.

I was in the 2nd row about 30 feet away from Travis Shaw going deep against the Cubs tonight. He had a nice night. Best seats I've ever had for a baseball game, including my nephew's Little League games.

Travis Shaw has a 917 OPS, when is Tyler Thornburg expected to throw his first pitch this season?

I have been told that I have an unwholesome interest in Shaw in another thread, but since you guys have been talking about him, oh boy, is he hot. Beautiful rbi double down the third base line in the first remains the only run in that game.

in 21 PA vs L, Shaw is hitting .350/.381/.800 this year
In 55 PA vs R, Shaw is hitting .216/.273/.529 this year

In 2015, Shaw hit lefties .329/.353/.622 in 88 PA
in 2015, Shaw hit righties .236/.313/.410 in 162 PA

In 2016, Shaw hit lefties .187/.235/.364 in 115 PA
In 2016, Shaw hit righties .257/.325/.437 in 415 PA.

His career split in the MLB is now
.248/.318/.438 vs R in 633 PA
.258/.294/.507 vs L in 221 PA
His minor league splits were
.266/.366/451 vs R in 1511 PA
.250/.331/425 vs L in 665 PA

I think whether Shaw drops below .700 is largely dependent on if his true ability vs L is closer to his career averages than 2016.

Yeah, that's odd since you only made one post about Travis Shaw in the other thread. Generally speaking, we don't like these threads becoming "Following Travis Shaw." One year it was nothing but Kevin Youkilis updates.

Bronson Arroyo going 6 innings on 66 pitches, mostly in the high 70s with no walks and 7 Ks for the win against Lackey and the Cubs- damn I wish I could have watched that game. Impressive and/or lucky.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Thankfully the Ellsbury updates have ceased as well.
For the last two years running the yanks have paid $21mil for aprox. 85 OPS+. They're paying him the same rate till 2021. That said, if he has a good year, I'm sure we'll hear about it. Can one cherry pick bellyaching? If so, watch for it here.

FWIW, I think the Shaw updates are a different beast - he's a low-draft, fringey prospect who tried hard for us and helped for a year. He wasn't a disgruntled heir-apparent sent to the curb, or a high value piece which was foolishly traded away, or a FA who jumped ship. There was no outrage when he was swapped to shore up an area of need. There's no reason not to wish the guy every bit of success he'll be able to enjoy.

Ellsbury hit his 2nd homerun of the year today. 99th career. 100 watch begins. 2011 accounted for >30% of his career homeruns.
2007-2010: 1513 PA, 93 OPS+
2011: 732 PA, 146 OPS+
2012-2016: 2721 PA, 98 OPS+

It's also the only thing pulling him above 100 OPS+ for his career.

Another short-timer, Jonathan Aro, suspended 50 games for a (unspecified) positive drug test.

Source: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/19234660/former-all-star-pitcher-steve-delabar-suspended-80-games-positive-drug-test
Jonathan Aro is the type of player I don't begrudge trying to get a single payday. The difference between the major league and AAA minimums is absurd, so if you're a AAAA guy who needs 3 mph on your fastball or bat speed I could see the economics involved there as justified. It's sort of like all those players like Daubach and Mahay who crossed the union lines in 95. Just get one arbitration season and you're set up really well for the rest of your life. Can't retire on it, it can do what you like a little easier.

I saw this on MLB.TV - that he was pitching - and watched it. And I'm glad he did. A crazy game, and I couldn't believe he was doing it, that he was even still pitching at all. Good for him.

Manuel Margot's career bWAR for the Padres (1.4) now exceeds Craig Kimbrel's for the Red Sox (1.3). Expected that to happen someday - just not as soon as the first month of his rookie season. (Disclaimer: Margot was destined to be traded with our crowded outfield, but the Padres did well to acquire a guy who looks like their CF of the future.)

Anderson Espinoza's still on the DL. They're hoping mid-May.

Not all WAR is equal. How comfortable would we be with Hembree/Barnes as our closer, and Margot in the OF?

More than half of that bWAR rating is from defense. Defensive WAR in a sample of 32 games is laughably meaningless, no matter how it's calculated. Offensively, it's still all of 129 plate appearances.

Eric Gagne signs with the Long Island Ducks of the Independent League. Hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2008. Did throw a couple scoreless innings for Canada in the WBC.

Can't believe he's still around, and that he's back after two full seasons out of the league. That's pretty crazy.

Looks like Matt Albers is getting a shot at closing games for the Nationals.

They have gone through several closers this season through injuries and ineffectiveness.

Daniel Bard pitched 8 2/3 innings for STL's AA team, and allowed just 6 hits, no home runs, a 2.75 GO/AO, and struck out 7. The downside is that he walked 19, threw 4 wild pitches, and hit two batters. He was released last week.

:( I don't know what is worse, the fact that he never regained his form, or the fact that at 31 and years removed from success, he is still trying to put it all together. I can't imagine what that must be like.
