How many goddamn years have we been saying this? The years they had team speed they won the Cup, won the East conference and won the President's Trophy? As soon as Cam got more power that went out the window. Cam doesn't believe in speed.
No, those teams weren't any faster. They won by beating teams from below the circles. Nathan Horton, Lucic, the entire fourth line, all grinded out wins by playing heavy.
Just like last years SJ Sharks or the Ducks or LA Kings in previous years. You can win in this league with power just as much as you can win with speed.

edit forgot Mark Recchi was also an important part of those teams and might have been the slowest player in the league by then.

Hoping the strong drafts they've had will change that up a bit. The B's haven't really had the opportunity to integrate a bunch of young talent like this.

j44, No way. They had a lot of speed on the 3rd and 4th lines and skated teams into the ground, plus Marchand was much faster back then. Go look at dafoomie's Youtube page of the 2011 playoffs, they outskated and outpaced everyone that year.

Cam doesn't believe in speed. He wants a "heavy" team. He's a dinosaur.

Let's not kid ourselves that team was infinitely more skilled, if not significantly faster than this one.

Id assume a veteran 7th d type?

I've got them with
Chara-mcavoy
Krug-Carlo
Miller-Miller

That's with McQaid going to Vegas but Ogara, Grzylek, Lauzon and Zboril waiting in Providence.
I doubt McQuaid is the one Vegas takes. If they're taking a Bruins D-man its going to be whichever one of the Millers is left unprotected (assuming the three Bruins D to be protected are Chara(NMC), Krug, and one of Colin and Kevan). Kevan and McQ have essentially the same contract and Kevan is the better of the two, and Colin is cheaper with more upside. Its that reason Colin is probably the one getting protected.

Considering most of the eligible forwards are crap like Beleskey, I am guessing Kevan is the pick.

McAvoy hurt them today. Stupid kneeing penalty led to one Ottawa goal and he played passively on their second instead of closing the gap. He's young, he'll learn, but he was crap today defensively.
At the same time, there were a half dozen instances today where I saw his surroundings while he had the puck in dangerous territory and thought "fuck, what's he gonna do here?"

All but one of those, he made the right decision - or made a play I didn't see until his patience opened up the ice.

He's got better instincts than any other d-man that's come through this system in my lifetime

Sean Thornton, Greg Campbell and Ryder were big parts of that team.
Lucic and Horton lead the team in goals. They were not at all a fast team. They outlasted teams because they could roll 4 lines and wear out D consistently.

I don't think it's fair to put Vatrano in that group. He missed 3 months with a foot injury and showed flashes at times. I'm excited to see him with a full healthy offseason.
That's not a slight on Vatrano, but I think of him more as a young version of Michael Ryder, a shoot-first winger that doesn't kill you defensively. He's a good player to have, but not a big help to their top-end depth issue.

Team speed is more important now than it was in 2011.
Team speed is important in EA Sports.
SJ was one of the slowest teams in the league last year and made the cup finals.
They were strong on the puck, got good goaltending and played very good D.

Speed isn't the end all, be all, if that was the case Daniel Paille would be in the HOF.

Can someone explain why they blew it dead when Marchand got pushed into him and Anderson flopped? Net wasn't off. It wasn't a penalty. And the faceoff was still in the Ottawa end so it wasn't a hand pass or anything like that?
Why do you stop play because the goalie is out of position?

Also: Fuck.

I don't have the words for how much I hate the whole "we don't want a call to influence the game!" bullshit. The lack of logic in that amazes me.

There will never be a good explanation for that one. Another panic whistle.

Also the idea that the 2011 team was fast is literally insane. The only above average speed skaters on that team were Peverley, Kelly, and Paille. No one on that defense could skate half as fast as Colin Miller does now. This year's team could skate rings around the 2011 team.

I think they were going to call interference but Marchand went apeshit and they realized where Anderson was and saw Ceci's stick buried in Marchand's midsection

Has that ever been called before in the history of the NHL? Believe the rule is to let the play continue and if they think interference lead to a goal to then waive the goal off. Never seen play stopped because a goalie is bumped but still has his lid on.

If they thought it was GI without a penalty, then the draw should've been out of the zone. It was in. Anybody's guess as to what the call was.

0-3 at home. That's just unacceptable
Tough when you have to beat OTT and the refs in all but one game.
They literally lost 2 players to the exact same play that OTT scored a pp goal on and Bs didn't even get a pp on either one. And that will be forgotten with all the other BS the refs pulled this series. I hate to sound like a homer but the national announcers called the officials out multiple times. That should simply not happen.

Two totally different thresholds for each team. I dont care if the refs suck as long as they suck evenly and consistently. In this case it was obvious early in the series that Senators were going get helped along at every chance.

Fuck this league.

Well, between the 4 teams in the playoff series involving local teams, the home team is now 1-9.

Wait what? I thought he played himself out of the organization this series. If I see one more stretch pass icing from him I'll have a heart attack.

Shitty ending to an incredibly frustrating series. No one to really blame either (on the team...officials be damned). I'm incredibly optimistic for the future and they are gonna have a great team next year if they don't fuck it up.

I absolutely think Marchand had a hand/wrist/arm injury. He didn't look like the same player at all.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm all done with Morrow too (although this was his best game of the series). He's got the tools, but it just ain't working.

McAvoy hurt them today. Stupid kneeing penalty led to one Ottawa goal and he played passively on their second instead of closing the gap. He's young, he'll learn, but he was crap today defensively.
Yeah...he looked tired tonight. A few silly mistakes, showed his inexperience. Been a long year and he responded incredibly well to being thrown in the fire, but it wasn't easy for him tonight. Says a lot about his ability though, that he struggled and was still a top 4 defenseman.

Can someone explain to me how this team isn't going to be pretty much the same team again next year? Outside of replacing a few of the middling pieces, praying some team takes McQuaid and praying a few of the kids can contribute in their year one season - I just don't see how we're not looking at basically the same team this time next year.

Maybe I'm just not being creative enough.

Unless the defense makes a huge jump, I agree. There's basically no depth on offense unless Vatrano makes a biiiiig jump, I guess.

I do think I'm taking one step into the trade Chara camp, however. I'm not fully committed, but with the emergence of McEvoy and Carlo, if LV doesn't take McQuaid, then I think it's the easiest way to free cap space and improve the team.

Let's make an anti-Bruins move for once. Let's trade away an expensive aging veteran instead acquiring or holding onto one.

The biggest issue is his NMC so I imagine their hands are tied with him. Regardless, he has one more year at a $4M cap hit, so I'd rather keep him at that price point.

I'm terrified about Carlo's head being an ongoing thing. Mainly because there's been nothing out there about him doing anything physical. And partly because Savard is still too fresh.
