Nice story about FedEx* getting a ring.

* I can't remember what the official ruling was on whether we should call Federowicz "FedEx" when he is not part of a platoon with Luis Exposito.

Edit: Add to the long list of things that make me feel old the facts that (1) FedEx was dealt SIX years ago and (2) I had completely forgotten that he was part of the trade that landed Erik Bedard.

Adding to that Erik Bedard trade anecdote... you may recall that one of the the key players in that deal, whose departure caused some prospect angst at the time, was Portland outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang. Chiang never replicated his crazy good 2011 for Portland, and left to go play in the Japanese and Chinese leagues in 2013.

He's currently playing in the World Baseball Classic for Taiwan. He's batting third for them and playing... third base? He's also been reunited with former Sea Dog teammate Che-Hsuan Lin! Lin is batting 9th for Taiwan. Both Chiang and Lin doubled today. They also both committed an error.

I don't watch a lot of live TV anymore, so forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I just glanced over and saw David Ross is going to be on the next season of Dancing with the Stars.

The curious case of Brady Anderson

Duquette, manager Buck Showalter and center fielder Adam Jones are among those who praise Anderson as an asset, with Showalter saying, “We view him as nothing but a positive.”

Others with past or present ties to the Orioles, however, consider Anderson a source of friction and tension as he blurs the lines between executive and former player.

Anderson, 53, is close with both Orioles owner Peter Angelos and Angelos’ son, Lou, an ownership representative, adding to Anderson’s perceived power with the club – and prompting discussions among some players about what his continued ascent might mean for the club’s future management structure, sources said.

Former Sox reliever Todd Frohwirth, dead at 54. He was best known for his submarine throwing style and his goofy nickname given to him by Chris Berman: Todd "Which arm does he" Frohwirth.

Chris Marrero is playing his way onto the Giants. Seems likely he'll make the team as a back-up OF.

Edit: Bochy announced post game that Marrero will be part of the LF platoon to start the year.

Koji debuts for the Cubs with a 26 pitch, scoreless 7th inning. Seeing him face Matt Carpenter brought back some great memories.

Mark Melancon got off to a really bad start with the Giants. BS, loss, blowing one for Bumgarner. Just one game though.
He didn't blow one for Madbum. The game was tied going into the 9th. Giants took a 1 run lead in the top.
Jeremy Hazelbaker scored one of the runs off of Melancon

I just stumbled across this article. It is very interesting indeed.

Initially, when I asked Anderson if the players were comfortable with his role, he said he didn’t understand the question.

I rephrased it.

“When you were playing, if there was a guy dressing in the clubhouse who was vice president of baseball operations, a member of the front office who had a good relationship with the owner, would you have been comfortable around that person?” I asked.

“It’s an unusual case, I admit,” Anderson said. “I don’t know what to say. We’ve had huge success during the time (that he has been in this role). To a high degree, I’m pro-player. I’m private individually. I don’t betray trusts ever. That’s not a problem.

“You’ve been around baseball. There are third-base coaches and people who have relationships with owners. There are all sorts of people who are known as spies or whatever.

“It’s just not applicable to me. It just doesn’t exist.”

Anderson’s conflicts with coaches, however, are quite real.
Now, I admit that I have never (well, since he was dealt to the Orioles anyway) cared for Anderson and I am biased. I have always thought of him as a cheating (50HRs), arrogant, pretty boy. He has a locker in Orioles clubhouse and unfettered access to Peter Angelos and his son Lou. This exchange with Rosenthal would have me thinking twice about getting close to Anderson if I were an Oriole player.

At one point during our conversation, I asked Anderson, “Who are you responsible to? Whom do you report to?”

“Who does Buck report to?” Anderson asked.

“Dan, but also Peter,” I replied.

“Who does Dan report to?”

“Peter.”

Anderson paused before continuing, then said he viewed his efforts as part of a collaboration. He offered individual praise for Showalter, Duquette and Peter Angelos, calling the owner, “one of the best people I know, one of the best characters, somebody I’m intensely loyal to, always will be.”

Milwaukees 3bman Travis Shaw has had a nice couple of games to start the season: slugging 1.000 so far. Needless to say, Brewers fans are happy with exchanging the broken Thornburg for him. So Far.
Here's an interesting article positing that he should hit more HRs in his new park:http://www.brewcrewball.com/2016/12/28/14095506/travis-shaw-should-benefit-from-a-change-of-scenery
Basically, Millers Park is friendlier to lefty hitters:
As you can see from the above graphic that overlays Fenway Park’s dimension on top of Miller Park, Milwaukee’s home field is much more accommodating to lefties. In fact, only three stadiums - Yankees Stadium, Coors Field in Colorado, and Camden Yards - were more conducive to left-handed home runs from 2012-15 than Miller Park was.

Our old friend Daniel Nava with a flair for the dramatic today. Two deep blasts for the Phillies in his first two at bats! Love that guy!

Kopech made the Baseball America Prospect report:

Michael Kopech, rhp, White Sox. Acquired with Yoan Moncada and two others in the deal that sent Chris Sale to Boston, Kopech made his White Sox and Double-A debut Saturday. The flame-throwing righthander struck out 10 in 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs and throwing 77 pitches, 45 for strikes. Chicago’s No. 5 prospect has front-of-the-rotation potential, frequently eclipsing 100 mph with his fastball.

All nine outs for Kopech in the second/third/fourth innings were via K, although there were four baserunners including a solo HR mixed in.

Wonder if Travis Shaw is a genuinely good hitter with a bad body whose legs go as the season progresses. You could see it last year in his sapped power & diminished fielding. Maybe improved conditioning? Believe I read he lost ten pounds. Anyway, wish him well.

Haven't seen Anderson Espinoza mentioned. He was shut down with forearm tightness, but they say there's no ligament damage.

Espinoza tightness not ligament, elbow related, Preller says

And nobody's more trustworthy with elbow diagnoses than AJ Preller.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Do any of the stat sites have a function where you can assemble a list of (former sox) players that automatically updates? It would be great to have a one click link to see what's going on with the gang.

It sounds like old friend Tim Federowicz is going to get called up by the Giants while Posey goes on the concussion DL.

Edit: Giants beat writers on Twitter confirm this transaction and that Bochy refers to him as "FedEx"

Clay is pitching for Philadelphia again tonight. 3-0 Mets in the 2nd inning, one out. The experience never changes.

Edit; 5-0 after 2.
