Hey everybody!

I'm travelling to Boston in September and have been lucky enough to get a ticket for the Red Sox game on 28th Sept.

Was just wondering if you have any advice on where to go before or after the game to soak up the atmosphere and maybe have a few drinks.

Also, I've not booked a hotel yet, any advice on where's best to stay to take in the Boston culture would be appreciated.

Thanks,

James Mahon

Welcome to Boston and to the Sons of Sam Horn website!

There are many bars and restaurants near Fenway Park for pre and post game activities, from lowbrow to highbrow and everything in between.

Hotel would depend on your budget and what else you want to see in the Boston area.

I love the Hotel Tonight app, lets you get cheap prices on hotels. The city is small, though. You won't be needing two or three different hotels.

Late September games can get quite cold, so keep that in mind. One must-do is take a stroll around Fenway, there's various statues and plaques all around.

Food? Drink? That all depends on what catches your fancy. Mostly chains in the Fenway area now, but plenty of local places a few blocks away. I usually go to Game On or Yardhouse when I'm at Fenway, but those are both chains. Not at all near Fenway, but Yankee Lobster in the Seaport has damn good lobster rolls and fresh seafood at reasonable prices.

Budget would be about $100 dollars a night for hotel, I'm travelling alone so somewhere not too dangerous would be nice. And I'm hoping to go and visit Harvard whilst I'm there so will he travelling to Cambridge at some point.

$100/night is a nonstarter in Boston, think London prices. You might get a hostel room at that price if that's ok, or be a 45 minute transit ride out of town.

Maybe a bad airbnb.

$200 might be more reasonable. Boston in early Fall is very popular

That's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for, I'll stretch my budget then. Thanks.

If you're looking at $100/night for a hotel, I'd recommend checking Hotwire for one of their "secret" hotel deals. I got a 4 star hotel in a nice part of the city last weekend for $91/night using Hotwire. You won't know what hotel you're staying at until you book (just general amenities and the general geographic area it is located in) and it's non-refundable, but I've used it often in both New York City and Boston and have never had a problem or been disappointed.

The hotel standard isn't really an issue as I'll only be sleeping there and spending all my days out sightseeing so I'll have a look into that thanks

Go to the North End for one meal. It's Boston's Italian neighborhood. Old winding streets. It's almost impossible to choose a bad restaurant. Not a short walk from the ballpark but you can take the T (the subway) close by.

For hotels, I'm making the assumption you'll be reliant on public transport and would prefer to minimize Ubering to keep the budget in control:

-Holiday Inn in Brookline is right on the Green Line C train that takes you to Kenmore/Fenway, making it pretty convenient for getting anywhere you want to go. Kenmore is a central transit routing hub with buses to downtown and Cambridge.

-Around Fenway(-ish), for some reason the Copley Marriott is generally 25% cheaper than the six other hotels within spitting distance of it. All the savvier business travelers I know seem to end up there.
