Cassidy magic? This start to his B's coaching career reminds me some of Morgan Magic for the Sox back in '88

It's worth a discussion to talk about what's changed since the coaching change. A little bit more wide-open play style? He seems to also have put Dobbie on a firm schedule for starts which might make things easier to plan. I dunno. I like the start a great deal.

From what I can see in Cassidy's seven games, the main components of the style change seem to be:

1. Getting the D men more involved in the offensive zone. Cassidy seems to want them to pinch more frequently, or even cycle down into the circle when they've got the puck.

2. Letting forwards try to create down low rather than passing back to the points when in doubt. "Use your points! Use your points!" yelled every hockey coach ever. At the NHL level, guys can create scoring chances down low either with great hands or big bodies.

I feel like they've also reduced the frequency with which the 3rd forward gets involved behind the net or along the boards, instead leaving people between the dots or in front of the net. Feels like they're scoring a lot more goals with people in these great shooting/deflection positions

Rask in net tonight. C. Miller back in for Liles; Beleskey remains the healthy scratch up front.
We're at the point that the only positive about his contract is that the NTC goes away after next year. I'd love to know just what went wrong with him here, or maybe what went so absolutely right with him in Anaheim.

Beleskey has missed significant time 3 of the last 4 seasons due to injury. I think similar to McQuaid, his development has either stagnated or regressed because of the sheer amount of time trying to get BACK to where we has performing pre-injury.

I think they were very aggressive (and effective) pinching this year under Julien too. The bigger difference to me is defenseman trying to make plays passing and skating the puck out of their own zone, and defenseman being more aggressive getting involved in the rush and getting further up ice during breakouts.

I don't have the data to back it up, but their transition game seems to be much more effective in getting zone exits with possession, at the expense of some defensive zone turnovers.

edit: Which makes me wonder why Colin Miller is still being healthy scratched by a second coach. Either he has had a nagging injury all season, is a complete garbage person, or this organization is horrible at judging their own talent. He's signed through next season so it's doubtful they're trying to suppress his future contract value. Which would be a terrible thing for an organization to do anyway, on several levels

Are there statistics on zone entries and exits? It seems to me like under Cassidy there's been a shift towards forwards carrying into the offensive zone instead of dump+chase, and getting out of the defensive zone shifting away from going up the sides to having a forward or d man in the middle and having them make a quick pass to a skater in the neutral zone.

The other big difference, I think there are a lot more touch passes. Not necessarily only prior to goals, but I think making the defense swivel a little further back+forth is causing the synergy between defensive players to break down.

That's some data. I'll try to dig up some more detailed entry and exit data. They haven't been dump and chase for a while, that's not a Cassidy thing. I think Cassidy's main offensive difference is they make more plays down low instead of shuttling the puck back to the points.

I feel like they've been more aggressive on the rush once they enter the zone too. Instead of curling back and to the outside a lot of the time, they've been taking the puck to the net more, even (especially) Spooner who has looked like a completely different player

Time for the under 10 timeout and they haven't had the under 14 timeout yet. I love shit like that. I'm pretty weird though.

Did Jack really just get all excited and say he was on Queer St while he was on the ice knocked out? That's pretty bad

Hip and side clean through the center body mass no leaving the feet or extension at all. Great hit, u fortunate result.

That looked clean live
Looked like principal point of contact was the head. He glided in kind of sideways, didn't lift up, didn't drive through it or extend the elbow. Would have been clean in the old NHL, but he's gonna face some discipline I would imagine. It was a great hit with an unfortunate result. Felt bad for Burmiatrov there, but he should blame his teammate for the suicide pass.
