They have to add relief help, right? I have been hoping that NY can trade them Clippard (one year left on his deal), it seems to make a lot of sense all around to me.

Nats sign Vance Worley to MiLB deal

http://m.nationals.mlb.com/news/article/214631852/nationals-sign-veteran-righty-vance-worley/

The Washington Nationals signed veteran right-hander Vance Worley to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Major League Spring Training, the team announced Saturday.

Worley, 29, went 2-2 with a 3.53 ERA in 35 games (four starts) for the Orioles in 2016. The righty provides the Nationals with a versatile option as a potential sixth starter or long reliever, both roles he has served throughout his seven-year career.

I was curious about why he was only worth a minor league deal - that's a pretty solid performance in the AL East last year. Looks like his peripherals were down. FIP of 4.82, strikeouts down, BABIP 20 points lower than anything he's put up in the last five years. Is that just luck, or the product of strong corner D in Baltimore?

Jeremy Guthrie signed to Minor League Deal

http://www.masnsports.com/nationals-pastime/2017/02/nationals-add-veteran-guthrie-on-minor-league-deal.html

In need of some experienced rotation depth, the Nationals have signed veteran Jeremy Guthrie to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league camp this spring.

Guthrie hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2015 with the Royals, but the Nats are willing to take a low-risk chance on the 37-year-old, a highly popular member of rotations in Baltimore and Kansas City over the last decade.

Owner of a 91-108 record and 4.37 ERA in 305 career major league appearances (272 starts), Guthrie provides the kind of experienced fallback option the Nationals have lacked in recent seasons.

going in with ryan Zimmerman as their starting 1b is a huge handicap. the only chance the nats have is a MVP season from Harper and a full season of high quality Strasburg. a full season of trea will be great but 1b, c, and LF all have the potential to be black holes. who plays 3b if/when rendon gets injured? Stephen drew?

Nats/Red Sox to play exhibition game at the Naval Academy

http://m.nationals.mlb.com/news/article/215603238/naval-academy-to-host-red-sox-nats-on-april-1/

Major League Baseball's long tradition of honoring America's military heroes will continue this spring when the Nationals and Red Sox compete in a preseason exhibition game April 1 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The game, which will be open exclusively to Naval Academy midshipmen and members of the U.S. Navy, will be televised nationally on ESPN. The Nationals will host one exhibition game at the Naval Academy each year through 2019 as part of a new 3-year agreement.

I feel like Wilmer Difo is the Nats version of Marco Hernandez. They are one rendon injury away from starting drew/difo. The team is in trouble without great, healthy seasons from harper and stras. The team is good but just doesn't have great depth. this team lives and dies with Harper and Strasburg. An MVP season from Harper can fill a lot of holes

Nats are not far at this point from advertising for bullpen help on craigslist....

Punting in the offseason (on getting a closer) is going to end up costing them dearly in prospects at the deadline, because they cannot go into the postseason with the disaster of a bullpen they currently have.

Yeah that was a tough one. Wasn't a lot of help out there and the numbers given to Chapman, Jansen and Malancon were - quite frankly - kind of insane, but that's the league we live in now. The kicker is they gave up so much for Eaton and now he's out, so the reservoir is depleted. I think they'd be best of making an early move for a Robertson or Madson, which shouldn't cost a ton and would give them some time to reassess before the deadline. But they definitely need help. Bullpen seems to be Rizzo's white whale.

While no one guy has been allowed to fail over and over (like KRod's 5 blown saves for Detroit), they amazingly have 5 different guys who have each already blown 2 games, and incredibly not one of them is the original closer for this team (Blake Treinen) who while only having one official blown save to his name, is also the proud owner of a 6.51 ERA and -0.5 WAR....

They have 5 relievers who currently boast a negative WAR, and another two that have 0.1. That is a problem, and kind of odd for a team that has such awesome starters....

Though they win last night, their bullpen remains beyond atrocious. And there is no evidence of improvement. I don't know of a team with a single greater need and less negotiating leverage as the trade deadline begins to loom.
