California. Duh.
So it's Wolves at Anfield next Saturday in the 4th round, 3 days after the 2nd leg of the League Cup semifinal.

Wolverhampton are currently 16th in the Championship. We will see if Klopp continues his trust in the kids or brings in a few more experienced players.

Lucas, after being told by the press that this was his first goal in nearly 7 years: "I scored last week in training!".

That last goal came against Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League, 2,316 days ago. Roy Hodgson was Liverpool manager. Ben Woodburn was 10 years old.

So that didn't go as planned. In other news:
  • Klopp frustrated that teams aren't willing to part with his transfer targets
  • Marković was recalled from loan at Sporting and loaned to Hull City

Interesting line ups for today's Cup semifinal second leg:

Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Can, Henderson, Lallana, Firmino, Sturridge, Coutinho. Subs: Wijnaldum, Klavan, Moreno, Lucas, Mignolet, Origi, Woodburn.

Southampton: Forster, Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Davis, Tadic, Rodriguez, Redmond. Subs: Clasie, Long, Martina, Hojbjerg, McQueen, Sims, Lewis.

The Southampton side looks a little more offensive-minded than I expected, but maybe that's a good gamble. I think this 'Pool lineup can score 2 or 3 today, but are also liable to give up 2 or 3. Here's hoping that Sturridge can actually coordinate with his teammates today because that Stephens/Yoshida pairing looks susceptible.

Southampton have looked more threatening on the counter than Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold has nonetheless looked solid against Redmond. Lovren looks lost.

Great recovery by Forster after bungling a shot at him from Can

i might go Origi for Can in the next couple minutes, dropping Lallana back deeper. That seems at least a little more likely to pop one in. A little...

Ooof. It's been a real rollercoaster of late, from being stymied three times by Soton and Plymouth Argyle(!) to late-game collapses to Bournemouth and Swansea.

Klopp's got to get things sorted soon so that 'Pool finish top-4. There wasn't much depth to this squad from the start, and it doesn't look like there's anything brewing on the transfer market this month. Mane' return will be a big boost, but the problems in defense are most pressing at the moment.

i have absolutely no clue what to do with Sturridge, but addition by subtraction seems glaringly obvious. He's not integrating, he's causing distraction on the pitch, and he's pushing potentially valuable assets away from the center of play. He's got to go or sit.

Sturridge sucks. He was awesome a couple of years ago when he was faster and teams were worried about Suarez. That's not now. He should be a last 10 minutes guy when you're desperate for a goal at best.

Agreed. but he's definitely not going anywhere right now. He's on £120k/week wages for the next 3 years, and its hard to imagine Sturridge taking a pay cut ages 27-30. This is likely his peak earning window, and he knows it. Even with all the money sloshing around the EPL, it's hard to see which side will bite over the next week for an oft-injured, out-of-form striker on high wages and a rumored price tag north of £25m. Maybe this summer Sturridge and his agent can do the leg work and find a new home.

I'm more eager to see the exiled Sakho move along, maybe to Southampton or any place that will take his wages and send back a nominal fee.

Sturridge does have "English" on his resumé. It inflated the hell out of Sterling's price, at least.

I genuinely can't tell if he's obstinate or stupid. I lean toward him being dumb as a fence post. I feel like he's trying to emulate the movement of his teammates but just has absolutely no clue how they're working as a tactical unit. His striker's instinct is to find himself space. His runs into an offside position used to be precipitated by through balls. Now they're just offside runs. When he moves diagonally or across the defensive line, he seemingly is always making the wrong choice. He moves toward the ball when the carrier's intention is to drive, thus bringing a defender with him. When he moves away, he's often taking his defender right into another teammate's run. It's infuriating how much he simply doesn't understand what's going on.

Klopp must be putting him on for a random moment of brilliance here or there, but he's breaking down attacks with horrific shot selection, bad passing, and awful movement. It's bad to play with 10- it's worse to play with 11 when one of them is actively (if inadvertently) enhancing the defense.

Well, Jamie has a different take. I never considered that he may be injured or terrified of reinjuring himself.

I don't have the language to articulate the negativity of this performance.

Karius' stupidity in the first minute essentially lost the entire match.

On Cou's late free kick an encroaching player blocked the shot. That was an automatic yellow and a kick from the new spot.

Senegal got knocked out of the African Cup of Nobody Seems to Give a Fuck (judging by the crowds in the games I watched before shutting off due to vuvuzela poisoning). Can they get the Concorde out of retirement to get Mané back faster?

If I recall correctly, Klopp sent a personal valet for Mane to the ACON......right back in the XI for the Chelsea match. Can drops, Llanna back to midfield with Gigi and Hendo....let's get the train back on the track.

The Guardian slipped in that 'Pool are looking for £12m for Sakho, and Sakho himself is asking for £105k/week in wages (that's a £30k/week raise for a guy who can't even sniff the practice pitch). Palace is hot rumored destination today. We shall see. That's a lot of coin.

Otherwise, looks like loan deals for youngsters and no first team signings. They better stay healthy down the stretch.

Update: Reports now that Palace are negotiating a loan for Sakho, which also sound like a good option for all involved. If he can re-establish his value under a good coach like Big Sam, a summer transfer seems much more likely.

Firmino really should have potted at least one of his chances. Conversely, a saved penalty is a collector's item.

We're on to Hull

Wasn't able to get watch, but happy to see 'Pool come from behind at Chelsea to share the points. Hopefully this result along with Mane's return and Mingolet's huge save turn the momentum.

It's a manageable slate in February, especially with no cup matches - at Hull, Spurs, at Leicester City. Picking up 7 or more points would solidify a top-4 standing.
