The Bruins announced that David Backes had some sort of operation done on his elbow on Monday. Olecranon Bursa, whatever that is. He's out at least through the next 2 games and then they will update. Czarnik has been called up.

The rest of the wounded...

Rask...LBI, they say day-to-day but he hasn't skated since the Devils game.

Khudobin- UBI, out 3 weeks.

K. Miller- Broken hand, original time frame was 6 weeks

Vatrano- Foot, 3-4 months. Best case scenario is probably around New Years.

They basically drained his elbow of fluid. Super. These are really starting to pile up. The goalie situation is pretty bleak. Subban does not appear to be ready for prime time and its hard to think McIntyre will be either. Tonight might be a rough one.

The Backes injury really sucks, he seemed to be fitting in really well.

Please let Tuukka be back sooner than any of us can reasonably expect.... but he was not moving well in either the Devils game or the one before that. There were a few times he went down and the play moved on and he was really slow to get up.

Rask has to be a groin thats been nagging him, right? Could be a result of altering(or bypassing some of) the pre-season routine to be ready for the World Cup. In a perfect world you'd like to see him rest and treat it until its 100% so its not a season long type thing, but with the current goalie situation this could be a big problem.

I heard on TSH that it was his hamstring.

Yeah, I've had a few clients with that injury. It's basically a nasty swelling injury, so he will be fine once it all dies down. He should be back by the weekend or early next week.

Bah. They played well after the initial shock and scramble of losing him, so hopefully Carlo can continue to step up his game and they can get through this. Carlo was really excellent last night after the 3rd STL goal.

From Pro Hockey Rumors,

In other Atlantic news:

  • The Boston Bruins hope that a practice injury like that of Hudon is far from what happened at their practice earlier today. Star winger Brad Marchand blocked a big shot from defenseman Adam McQuaid and went down hard. Marchand left the ice and did not return to practice. The Bruins offense has been anemic of late, other than the contributions of the top line, featuring Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and the upstart David Pastrnak. A long-term absence for Marchand would be difficult for the Bruins to overcome, especially with Zdeno Chara already injured. Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

Noel Acciari was sent to Providence today. Essentially a rehab assignment, I assume he'll be back up with the big club after a few games.

Vatrano was a non-contact practice participant yesterday. Inching closer.

With these two on the horizon, I can't remember a more dead man skating than Jimmy Hayes is right now. (Except Glen Murray in his last year, but I think he was actually deceased.)

I posted it in another thread, but it is possible that the expansion draft gives Hayes a season-long stay of execution. We need to be prepared for the possibility.

Sitting next to the B's bench last night in DC, my coworker asked me why everyone was shitting on Hayes. He's big, blah blah. I told him to watch him all game. He did absolutely fuck all, on every shift. Effort wasn't there. He is fucking cooked.

cshea's post that he just referenced. Really good explanation about how Reilly Nash and Jimmy Hayes are Expansion Draft protection.
It is and makes more sense the second time around.

One question....do the games played have to be with the current team? Or are these "guys signed for next year who have played enough" going to be trade commodities like "expiring contracts" in the NBA?

Frank Vatrano had been cleared to play. He's been assigned to Providence and will be in their lineup tonight.

B's just announced that Pastrnak will be out at least the next 2 games. He had the same elbow operation that Backes had earlier in the season.

Bursa, not MRSA.

Basically its a cyst that forms in the lining of the lubricating fluids in your joints. If you don't get them removed surgically, they can come back even if you drain them. I've had one on my right wrist for over a decade, but because its just an incredibly minor inconvenience (maybe 5% motion restriction, no pain) insurance won't cover removing it (just draining it), so I just still have it. I could see how a professional athlete, even if it was as minimal as mine, would want it surgically removed.

Vatrano recalled after playing 2 of 3 Providence games this past weekend. Looks like he is good to go. He scored in both so he maintained his goal-per-game AHL pace. 38 goals in 38 games.

This is good news, hopefully he can have a positive effect on the offense going forward.

Backes was cleared for contact and practiced this morning. Might play tomorrow depending on how he reacts. Just don't rush him please...

Goes from being instructed to not look at electronic screens to contact practice in 4 days.

We really know fuck all about head injuries, this is pretty scary (to say the least) for Backes's sake.

Yeah, this seems way too fast to me. Especially for a guy with a history.
They kept showing this hit during the Winter Classic, and with Backes having just gone out with this concussion, seeing it repetitively made me cringe. I hope he's skating just to keep his legs and that he doesn't play for a bit. I'd rather err on the side of caution here.

Rask is fine, says he can play tomorrow. Phew.

Nothing on Colin Miller, but he hasn't practiced since going down in STL.

Beleskey returned to practice today but is not cleared to play.

I feared Tuukka had the same thing that happened to Subban when they said it got him in the neck
I thought it got under the edge of the mask and hit his jaw.

(Reminded yet again how it seems impossible I attended NHL games with maskless goalies)

One of my first games saw Bruce Gamble take one in the face, 30 minute delay while they stitched him up and came back and finished the game. Maple Leafs certainly carried 2 goalies that year (Gamble never played more than 61 in a season), but maybe the backup was already hurt.

I saw Charlie Hodge take a deflection off his forehead when he was with the Oakland Seals in '68. I can still see the trail of blood.

And because its Friday and the rabbit-hole is deep, I found this about Bruce Gamble:
http://scottywazz.blogspot.com/2011/07/absurd-goalie-monday-bruce-gamble.html
On February 8th, 1972-- Gamble was in net for the Flyers against the Vancouver Canucks in a 3-1 win. After the game and after reaching Oakland with the team, Gamble complained of chest pains and was sent to an Oakland hospital. It was found out that Gamble had suffered a heart attack during the Vancouver game and with this heart attack, it ended his career abruptly. Ten years later, after a practice with the "old-timer" team, the Niagara Falls Flames, Gamble had chest pains again and passed away in a Niagara Falls hospital at age 44.
During the game! Maybe they *were* tougher in those days.
