I don't know what the oddsmakers or the experts are predicting but I don't think any of those candidates are worthy outside of the executives/owners listed (Schuerholz, Selig, Steinbrenner). Of course, McGwire is going to be the one that probably gets the most attention.

I haven't found the makeup of the current committee, but the most recent I saw is dominated by HoF players (10 of the 16 voters). Don't know if that's changed, or whether it matters in how they vote

I forgot Albert Belle was out of baseball because of a hip issue at age 34.. He probably would have been mid 500 HR if he had stayed relatively healthy and moved to DH. He was at 382 when he retired.

Will never forget that Belle had over 50 HR and 50 2B in 95 when Mo inexplicably won the MVP. Was he the first ever to do it?

First and only. By 2B/HR, the only seasons with a 40-40 or better: Ruth in 1921 (44-59), Gehrig's 1934 (40-49), Greenberg in 1940 (50-41), Stargell's '73 (43-44), Belle himself in 1998 (48-49), Helton's '01 (54-49), Pujols numerous times (03 at 51-43, 04 at 51-46, and 09 at 45-47), Derrek Lee's 2006 (50-46), and Chris Davis in 2013 (42-53).

And he had 3 teammates who ended up with 500+ HR's on top of his 381.

Also had Burnitz and Giles whose careers combined for another 600, on the bench IIRC. A great offense, great World Series, and manny 2004 and 2016 Red Sox connections on that Indians team.

Hopefully the power hitting teammates argument doesn't similarly doom Betts and Ortiz this year.

Vaughn didn't have as much "help" in 95 as Belle did.

A quick glance at your list tells me you're missing at the very least Ortiz's '04 (47-41) and '05 (40-47) seasons.

Yahoo: Candidates needed 75 percent of the votes for election. It’s reported Shuerholz was unanimous selection, while Selig received 15 of 16 votes from committee members. Legendary player and manager Lou Piniella was the next closest among the candidates, finishing with seven votes.

If there were replay back in the day, nobody would remember who Lou Pinella was. The giant blowout arguments with managers and umpires have been nearly removed from the game.

Will be interesting to see who's on next year's "Modern Game" ballot ( for contributions from I think 1970-1987)...Dewey, Trammell, Dale Murphy, Mattingly and Jack Morris? (And Tim Raines if he doesn't get in this year). Anyone else? Lou Whitaker, maybe? And Lee Smith? (his career is pretty well evenly split between pre and post 1987) Any of them have any shot? (i guess it depends on who's making up the 16 or so voters).

SI has it:

The 16-member committee that voted consisted of owners Bill DeWitt Jr. (Cardinals) and David Glass (Royals), executives Andy MacPhail (Phillies), Kevin Towers (Reds) and Paul Beeston (formerly of the Blue Jays), veteran media members Bill Center, Steve Hirdt and Tim Kurkjian, and Hall of Famers Roberto Alomar, Bobby Cox (Schuerholz's longtime partner in Atlanta), Andre Dawson, Dennis Eckersley, Pat Gillick (the most recent executive elected to the Hall, in 2011), Frank Thomas, Ozzie Smith and Don Sutton.

I know it's a completely moot point, but can someone make an argument why George Steinbrenner should be a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Joe Pos touched in it earlier yesterday by saying something to the effect of the HoF is about stories and Steinbrenner was part of the story for 40+ years. I don't subscribe to that, but I'm also a little biased. What's the deal here?
