Segura only has 2 years of control left apparently, Walker 4.

Seems to be a bit of a GFIN by the Mariners

Hazen should be jailed for this...what an awful deal for Seattle

Yeah, Arizona likely will end up with the two best players in the deal. Although Curtis has some interesting K numbers at age 24.

And Arizona is usually the team making terrible deals.

I do actually like Segura though, guy was a good prospect and is now, after some troubled times in his life is realizing his full potential.

I don't know if this is so bad for Seattle. Segura has had WAR of 4.0, 0.6, 0.0, and 5.7 in the past 4 years. It's a steal if they get the guy from the bookend years. That's no lock of course, but Walker is one more mediocre, HR-filled year from being a guy who never lived up to his hype.

Fangraphs says the other guy going to Seattle could be significant.

Schoenfield breaks down the AZ-SEA deal, including this on Walker:

We've been hearing about Walker forever, but he's still just 24 years old, and while the Mariners control Segura for two more seasons, the D-backs will control Walker through 2020. He's a big kid who throws hard and throws strikes, but his fastball is straight and he pitches up in the zone, leading to home run problems -- 27 in 134.1 innings in 2016. The Mariners grew so frustrated with Walker they sent him down to the minors in early August. Manager Scott Servais basically questioned Walker's competitiveness. "When you go out there and take the mound as one of five starting pitchers, there's a certain level of expectation," Servais said at the time of the demotion. "You have to go deeper in games. You’ve got to be competitive when you go out there. Just the consistency of it, not knowing what you’re going to get from time to time."

In one of his first starts back from the minors, Walker allowed six runs and three home runs while getting knocked out in the first inning. After that, he took some advice from pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. and added a little Felix Hernandez-like twist to his delivery to help him hide the ball better and keep his shoulder from flying open. Two starts later, against the same team that had just shelled him, he pitched a three-hit, 11-strikeout shutout against the Angels. Over his final five starts, he posted a 2.93 ERA. That's the kind of upside the pitching-starved Diamondbacks are banking on.

Big trade on Thanksgiving Eve.

Holy shit. Those other two prospects the M's got better be damn good ball players because Segura for Marte is a horrible trade for the M's let alone giving up Walker too. Ouch. Hazen with highway robbery here.

It makes sense if you buy Segura's breakout as an accurate reflection of who he is going forward, and that Haniger can be a productive major leaguer. If you believe both of those things and believe that winning in the next two years for Seattle is more important than winning 3-5 years from now, you can see the rationale. Dave Cameron had a decent write up of it here.

That said, I think that's a long shot and that in a couple of years we're all gonna look back at this and be glad Dipoto wasn't calling the shots in Boston this winter.

Bigger Astros news, avoid arbitration with Aoki and agree to $5.5 for this year.

This reminds of the kid who told us Lester was coming back to Boston. Didn't he also break the Sandoval and Hanley signings? What happened to him?
The difference being that this Jordan Ray guy actually once covered the Astros for mlb.com

did he also cover MLB for Politico?
if he is wrong, Twitter should take away his blue check mark
I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The guy has bylines at mlb.com with stories about the Astros. As opposed to the Jake Wesleys of the world.

I have no idea if the guy is correct. He just did a quick translation of a Spanish tweet and re-tweeted it. But it's too quick and lazy to throw the Jake Wesley card on anyone we haven't heard of before

Yeah, that's way too much for McCutchen IMO, unless a team is really sure why he sucked last year and are close to positive he will be back to MVP-level form for the final two years of his deal.

Rosenthal posits that KC, with multiple FA2B, might want to trade sooner rather than later.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 2h2 hours ago
#Royals might be compelled to trade some of their 2017 FAs, but not for reasons I stated earlier. As a team in one of 15 smallest markets…
Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 2h2 hours ago
they might not want to risk large number of QOs and/or taking on all picks they would get after 1st round for departing FAs who get $50M+.
Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 2h2 hours ago
Most teams want picks, of course, but to spend that much in one draft? Maybe not. #Royals will need to digest all this, like rest of us.

Gammons offers reason

Peter Gammons ‏@pgammo 8h8 hours agoBrookhaven, GA
Building off Ken Rosenthal--do Royals try to get best player(s) Wash.,Mets, LAD, SF, Bos.Cubs can offer rather than 2018 3d round pick?

Well, Tyson Ross has been non-tendered. He missed all of 2016 and is still recovering from shoulder surgery he had in October. Will be interesting to see what sorts of offers he gets.

The no trade is interesting. Maybe he's just old and wants to stay somewhere warm for the year.

Maybe he wants to play one more year before retiring, and yeah in a place that's warm.

How would he pocket cash in exchange for his approval? Wouldn't that require an option or do you think someone would offer an extension for the ability to trade for him at the deadline? If that was his goal, why not wait to sign a bit longer and look for a two year deal?

Let's not overthink this. Either the Sox didn't value him as highly as the press portrayed or he preferred Houston with all other factors being equal. It is actually possible that all people don't see Boston as being the end all be all.

If Houston falls out of contention, they can pay him to waive his no-trade at the deadline. And he can waive it for a price and can limit his approval to a list of teams.

Marc Melancon has four-year offers worth upward of $60MM from the Giants, Nationals and perhaps one other team, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

So that means the floor for Jansen and Chapman is at least 5 years, $80M. Yeah, neither is coming to Boston.

The Nationals have traded middle infielder Danny Espinosa to the Angels for right-handers Austin Adams and Kyle McGowin, per an announcement from Washington.

The Nats’ decision to move on from Espinosa came quickly after Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reported the 29-year-old’s displeasure with the club’s acquisition of outfielder Adam Eaton. In trading a haul to the White Sox for Eaton, the Nationals picked up a player who should be their long-term answer in center field, thereby sending Trea Turner to shortstop. With Daniel Murphy entrenched at second base, Espinosa would have had to take on a bench role in 2017 had Washington kept him.

According to Sherman, the Dodgers and Justin Turner are getting close to a deal in the vicinity of 4 years $64M.

So in this crazy off-season, you can get an above average third baseman and middle of the order bat (136 OPS+ over last three years) for Mark Melancon money.

Turner's market was kept down by the qualifying offer, so not really comparable. Almost no one wants to give up their first round pick.

He's been a 4 to 5 win position player for years now, I still think it's crazy that the value of a first round draft pick puts him on level terms with a guy who throws 60 innings per year.

Turner is 32 and has only had 500 PAs once in his career. He has blossomed since coming to the Dodgers three years ago but I'm still not sure how comfortable I'd feel betting on him for his 32-35 years especially if that included giving up a first round pick as well as a change of environment.

Also, I don't think top-notch closers are properly valued by WAR, but that is a different and lengthy discussion.
