Bad news for fans of the once-popular Vine video-sharing network. The service's parent company Twitter announced today that it is killing the service's mobile app, meaning you can no longer create new clips. The website will still exist to showcase already-posted footage, although it's not clear whether you might be able to record new material in future.

This story is developing.

Twitter keeps shooting itself in the foot.... And if twitter is any indication. people are not happy

Vine always sucked in my experience--half the time videos don't play for no apparent reason. so you're stuck with a "Check out this awesome play!" link that just shows a preview pic.

Same experience for me. They also had a brutal mobile web experience, erring on the egregious side of trying to force an app download onto your device.

This is a nice opportunity for someone like Streamable if they decide to move towards a follower/account-oriented experience.

Same.

Of the Vines I have clicked I would guess that maybe 40% of them actually ended up playing with sound.

That's a good example. Fails to play in Chrome, fails to play in Firefox. But in Firefox if I click the "V" in the upper right, it opens in a new window where it plays okay--in Chrome it opens in a new window but still fails to play.

Screw them.

That plays fine for me in Chrome. I acknowledge that Vines tend to be wonky but I do enjoy them when they work.

There were some really creative people making short-form content using Vine. Creative people will always find a way to show off their content, but Vine was really convenient in putting it all in one place. A little sad, but I'm sure something better will replace it.

Anyone know how to download Vine videos to a Mac or an iOS device? My wife has a Vine account, and she has some irreplaceable videos (one of David Ortiz's GS in the 2013 ALCS, but more importantly videos of our daughter) that, naturally, we don't want to lose when Vine shuts down.

I would have thought this was an incredibly simple thing to do, but evidently it isn't.

The plan to keep the website online for access to your Vines
via The Verge

The company said it would not delete any Vines that have been posted — for now, anyway. “We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way,” the company said in a Medium post. “You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made.”

Six Seconds Is More Than Enough: Pornhub Offers To Buy Vine

In a letter from Pornhub VP Corey Price to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey that was shared with CNET, Price lays out the rationale:

"We figure since Twitter has dropped (Vine) and is having significant layoffs, that you and your stakeholders could benefit from a cash infusion from the sale of Vine. Not to mention we would be saving Vine gems like 'Damn Daniel,' 'Awkward Puppets' and many more."

Pornhub also promises to "restore Vine to Its NSFW glory," saying that clips "of porn in six seconds is more than enough time for most people to enjoy themselves."
