It happened over 100 years ago and unless you are a hardcore fan of the Cubs and/or the Giants (or of baseball in general), it's understandable to not know about that play.

Felger is an easy one to give a pass to on this topic. Mazz, as a guy who has primarily been a baseball reporter, gets less of one but still, it's not really something that every baseball fan or reporter should know about off the top of their head.
Any halfway serious fan of baseball should know about it, but it's not something I'd go around asking as a litmus test or anything.

A fucking baseball reporter should damn well know about it.

I had thought they were getting better the last couple weeks, but this week has been impossible. I can't last 30 minutes. Pats are losing to Pitt this week because the callers are getting too cocky. Pretty sure that won't be the reason if the Steelers manage to win.

I suppose this is as a good a spot as any for the quarterly reminder that trolling the audience is the way this show makes its money.

I spent my afternoon listening to Dale & Holley & Thornton beat the NFL and the the Giants to a pulp, but that's my peculiar fetish, so YMMV. Week 7 is a bit early for Felger to play the "fans are cocky!" card but it's been a weird season.

Felger openly admits he's there to troll. At least he's aware.

Felger: this is perfect! If the Pats win, we get to criticize them for beating a bad team. I mean, it was the STEELERS WITHOUT BIG BEN!!! If they lose, we get to hammer them to losing to an inferior team. It's perfect!!

Toucher and Rich went nuts on it for about 20 minutes today as well. It's nauseating as much as I love Pearl Jam.

Eddie, get out of the locker room.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I love PJ but it was a little much seeing Eddie in just about every shot.

I will say this though: Vedder seems to really love the Cubs (the Red Sox too*) and baseball in general, so it's not like he's hopping aboard the bandwagon. We all know Epstein's history with the band, so it seems to be reciprocal.

* At the Sunday show when PJ played at Fenway, Vedder went into a really cool story about how he was at the ballpark the night that Ortiz hit the grand slam against the Tigers. He sounded legitimately giddy as he told the story, so I thought that was cool.

Actually, you know what? Fuck Toucher and Rich and double fuck Mike Felger. You don't like it? Go watch Major Indoor Lacrosse, no one famous will be there and you can see the teams celebrate without anyone from outside the sport. I'm sure if Dave Matthews was yukking it up with the Packers after they won the Super Bowl, Felger would be fine with it.

If I was rich and famous and someone invited me to hang around with the Dombrowski and then be part of a ALCS celebration, I'd be there too.

There has never been an issue that is more in Mazz's wheelhouse than trading Jamie Collins. He's practically frothing at the mouth over it, and given that we have almost two whole weeks until the next Pats game, he is only going to get more hysterical.

It's Tuesday, and right now his level of outrage is approximately equivalent to a Giant fan had the Giants traded LT in his prime for the draft rights to Kenneth Simms.

Of course. We will then be instructed for the next two weeks that the salary cap is a myth.

They are gonna hate the rain delay and they are going to pummel MLB for it "derailing a great game, Mike!"

Talking Jaylen Brown today. Big Jim brought up the Dominique comp that has been floating around a few places. Mazz got on him for comparing the kid to Dominique, which I thought was fair, until Mazz finished and his take was that he needs someone better than Dominique. High bar I guess.

Their last interview last year was one of the most uncomfortable ones I've ever heard and frankly I blame Cam. Not surprised he's not coming back this year.

I don't think they were trolling at all... They relentlessly hammered Neely about the decision-making hierarchy, personnel moves, and the ham-fisted way they handle Julien's employment status. Neely's answers didn't exactly inspire confidence, and he got irritated with F&M. There wasn't anything they asked that was at all unfair. If anything, their straightforward questions were a little out of character relative to their contrived shtick.

MIKE, THEY GAVE $4.5 MILLION DOLLARS GUARANTEED FOR A KICKER! YOU LOST REVIS BY $4.5 MILLION!

TONY,WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE? A KICKER OR THE BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE GAME?
There were at least a couple dozen postsabout Revis in this thread that deserved bumping.

This was my favorite.

Someone should tell Felger and Mazz the Patriots won a road game yesterday. The tone would make you think the team is on a 5-game losing streak.

They are 8-2. Third in the league in scoring defense.

I loved Mazz saying that yesterday was their worst game of the season.

I liked the way they claim Brady is juicing.
Brady is one of the few NFL players I would believe wasn't juicing. Who knows what quackery that fake doc is giving him, but I think the whole Brady philosophy, as pseudo sciencey as it is, is pretty much about the opposite of taking roids and getting big.

'Getting big' and taking PEDs are not necessarily linked in terms of intent or effect. Athletes take products to aid in recovery time, either from true injury (see: Rodney Harrison testing positive for HGH after his knee injury) or more ordinary course wear and tear.

Honestly, from what we know of Brady's personality, I could see him taking supplements that aren't banned and/or the NFL hasn't gotten wise to yet without thinking he was doing anything 'wrong.' His week to week durability and sustained performance at 39 is incredible enough that I am unwilling to dismiss the possibility out of hand.

Oh, definitely. They're mostly a recovery thing to work out harder more often. But I think he'd be more of an HGH, deer antler spray, platelet rich plasma injecting, dried ground baby lemur foreskin taking type dude. He'd reject steroids for making his muscles too short or some other hogwash. The man thinks tomatoes cause inflammation, he's clearly not reading peer reviewed journals.

Why do you continue to listen? It's so you can hear Mikehole Felger's enlightened view of parenthood:

"He had the birth of his kid in Atlanta," Felger said on the television station. "The game was in Miami. I know when you make $30 million a year it ain't much to get a private jet. (Celtics co-owner) Wyc (Grousbeck) would probably pick it up to fly down at 3 o'clock in Atlanta. It's about a 90-minute flight to Atlanta. Play the game and come right back."
Despite believing Horford should have skipped out on his wife and child to go play the woeful Miami Heat, Felger did have one disclaimer: "If there were complications then OK, take that all off the table. If the mother or the child or something happened where there were complications, then I totally understand."
"But if this is a generic child birth?" he added. "Play the game."
Before finishing his point, Felger revealed he only took one day off from work after the birth of his own daughter. Just to be clear, Horford took the same amount of time. He is expected to practice Tuesday with the Celtics after they return to Boston.
"I would have gone to the game, I would have played in the game," Felger said. "I like my guys to sort of forsake everything for the team."

"Generic" child birth. What. An. Asshole.

Anyone know if he was this bent out of shape when Stevens missed a game to be with one of his dying former players?

That reminds of Francesa's hilarious reaction to paternity leave.

I don't buy that Tank or Felger actually believe what they were saying. Sometimes it's just fun to go full wrestling heel.

Murray teased the news of a Pats extension during a break, but withheld the name until they were live. F&M both guffawed but said they weren't overly surprised. Mazz: "As soon as you told us someone signed an extension, I knew it couldn't be anyone good..."

Greg Bedard tried to defend the extension saying Cannon has played really well this season and that there is a major shortage of RTs in the NFL. He said some team would ink Cannon to a big deal in the offseason. Felger told him to discuss offensive line play on someone else's radio show. He was laughing but he was serious too. He and Mazz wanted to stick to their anti Patriot narrative and a smart signing of a lineman isn't it. This extension just isn't hot take material.

I get the idea that "he's just trolling." But maybe someone should force him to say just that by calling him out. Make him admit that all he's doing is acting. Instead we get watered down bullshit like Washburn:
Professional athletes missing games because of the birth of children is a common occurrence, but there have been social media murmurs that perhaps Horford should have returned to the team for the game since his daughter already had been born.
No. Felger was on "television." And as fas as I know, there were no murmurs. Just Felger. Maybe Washburn is worried about the extra 50 bucks he gets by appearing on CSNNE, so he wont call Felger out and make him defend himself.

And then there's Felger's CSNNE colleague, Blakely:
Despite putting family first, there was still a segment of Boston fans who felt he should have played in the Heat game rather than be with his wife during the birth of their child.
http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/brad-stevens-al-horford-boston-celtics-greatest-responsibilities-are-sons-husbands-fathers
No. It wasn't a "segment of fans," it was the guy who pisses at the next urinal over on game day.

"I was just kidding," or "just trying to get a rise out of fanboys" does not cut it in a world where it literally took an act of congress so that regular people could do what Horford did. Someone should go up to Felger's kids and say, "Your Dad thinks you're worthless." "hahahahahahahahahahahaha, sorry, Mike, just trolling."

Back to oldies but goodies. NYDN reporting that Revis has told some friends that he really doesn't want to play anymore. It seems that playing till the wheels fall off isn't fun when they fall off. Who knew?

These two guys really suck.

If he isn't limited by an injury, Revis has turned into a bum. He's put on weight and it's not muscle. I understand it's a brutal sport and the fire can be lost if they are financially set, but he should be giving his all to live up to his end of the deal.

At least Revis has a good chance of being a future HOFer. Mazz wanted more of Browner too.

First Vick and now Revis? Jets have a knack for having guys who really don't want to play.

"Wait, how do you say his name? Kaypack? Coh-pick? What is it? OK..."
"30 seconds of googling..."
"OK MIKE I LIKE THE DEAL AND HERE IS WHY..."

Mazz went apeshit about Dombrowski trading the prospects, when he hasn't seen of them other than Moncada, and that was at the major league level. "What is Dombrowski trying to do?!?!?!"

Felger: "Did he give up any ML-ers?"

Mazz: "No! But I don't know what he's trying to do, that's all!"

Felger: "I know what he's doing... he just went out and got the best LHP in the AL without giving up any ML-ers. So what about the prospects?!"

Mazz: "But I don't know what he's doing!"

Felger: "Yes you do... he's trading prospects for ML-ers. That's the plan."

Mazz: *crickets chirping -- need to think of something* "But he should be able to do BOTH!" (Meaning trade/sign for ML talent while developing and retaining prospects.)
