They want him off the crutches for the shoulder surgery because if you fix someone's cuff and then they bang around on it for four to six weeks with crutches, you'll tear it right out. Doing both and then going on bedrest or whatever is a terrible idea
because you'd have no physiologic reserve after a month to six weeks in bed and it exponentially increases your chance of a blood clot, pneumonia, etc.

Long story short, this basically sets back his recovery clock for a month to six weeks from where it would have been for the shoulder alone

Makes sense. They aren't going to make the playoffs. Fitz isn't sticking around. Better to use the rest of the season to figure out what they've got.

Geno will get his 3 or 4 games, then it's on to Petty. I don't know if Hackenberg is ready for even a series at this point. He can't be getting any reps.

GJGE to Fitz for playing hardball and likely costing himself millions in guaranteed money.

The Jets only offered him 15 million guaranteed for a three year deal. It's not like they were offering a Revis type contract. He'll get another contract next year from another horribly run franchise.

I guess, but don't they know what they have? Geno Smith is terrible. Fitz is competent and I don't think 4 bad games changes that (at age 33).

I think they're tanking.

I agree with DanooME. While Geno will get some time, I don't think he'll be the only one. Benching Fitz just makes it easier to start cycling guys through. Besides, unless he gets punched in the face again (that will never stop being funny), Geno has a better chance of improving than Fitz does of being with the team next year.

As far as tanking goes, I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell the difference.

Who do they run out there now? Ryan "no one believes in me" Fitzpatrick or Hackenberg or Petty?

If they're smart, throw one of the kids out there. You know what you have in Fitzpatrick and it isn't good.

Hackenberg may be as inaccurate as Tebow. Bryce Petty still can't read defences.

It's the Four Horsemen of Atrophy.

Not sure that's so smart for Todd Bowles. He probably likes to be employed, and probably won't be for long if he plays Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg at quarterback.

Not so good for the GM either.

We don't know what the Jets have in Petty and Hackenberg but the Jets do have an idea and the fact that they've kept them locked to the bench says a lot.

Poor spinach chin; no one believes in him, he's going to show everyone who's boss going forward.

Knowing the Jets luck, he'll play well and they'll finish 8-8 so they once again end up with a shitty draft pick.

But then again, if they end up with the #1 pick, with their spectacular draft record, they'll find a way to screw that up too.

The New York Jets; 47 years of mediocrity.............

Drafts have been ok recently. Nothing like the Sapp debacle. Gholston was bad but Leonard Williams was the luckiest thing to happen to the Jets in a long time.

The real issue was, is and continues to be two major things; coach and QB. Without those two, forget it.

It's "only" OTAs right now so this isn't a huge issue yet, especially since Fitz is so familiar with Decker and Marshall. But at some point a lack of reps becomes problematic. If Fitz isn't signed by sometime during the preseason it has to affect their offense. My guess is he is going to hold out until sometime in September or October and bank on the offense sucking with Geno and forcing the Jets to pony up the $$. Would be interesting to see if that works out. It's not like Fitz needs the money, he has made plenty, and may feel that "only" $12M isn't worth the risk of playing again.
Well I was wrong on holding out into the season, but not practicing all offseason certainly didn't help...

Yeah, that one of them is secretly awesome otherwise why would they keep four quarterbacks?

I agree the GM is a problem. While Williams is a beast, they should have dealt that pick, traded back, and accumulated more assets (or alternatively, traded Wilkerson for a nice return). Only 2 of Wilkerson, Richardson, and Williams can be on the field at any given time. For a team that was trying to rebuild taking Williams while signing Mo was the wrong move.

They were also super dumb for signing Revis to that hideous contract

I don't think Bowles is the problem here. I think the problem is roster construction and the General Manager. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cap/

According to this they have under $500,000 in cap space. For such a crappy team, that is impressive.
The bad:
They've got 12M in dead cap space this year.
They're over the cap for 2017 already, despite being terrible.

The good:
They've got 10 guys for 2017 who can be cut and free up more than $5M each.
Pretty much only Wilkerson, Lee, and Williams are uncuttable.
They've got $500K dead space in 2017.

This is basically the last year the cap is a serious problem for them - heads will roll next year though.

Jets signing Revis to a big contract looking more and more like a mistake.
You can always count on Manish to twist the dagger a little deeper:

Revis fleeced Woody Johnson by taking $39 million of his money as part of a monster five-year, $70 million deal after the 2014 season.

Bill Belichick, meanwhile, is giggling like a hyena at his Foxborough fortress for not getting taken by an old player on his last legs.

Revis has a $13 million base salary (with $6 million guaranteed) in 2017. He's due a $2 million roster bonus on the second day of the new league year in March. The Jets will ask him to take a massive pay cut or simply cut him after the season. Stay tuned.

Of course, Revis didn't "fleece" anyone. He got his (possible) last big paycheck by playing all out in 2014, getting a ring, prompting Woody to make yet another splashy off-season move.

Players be players. Dunces be dunces. Woody & Tanny were all too giddy to sign their favorite son back to the Meadowlands.

Meanwhile, both BB & Revis are laughing like hyenas.

P.S. BB rarely takes a player back (recent notable exception being Chung). I don't see Revis coming back to NE but if he does, I bet he'll find a role that suits his current set of skills.

That Mehta column prompted me to read the Newsday piece that Boston.com piece is sourced from about his body breaking down. It's actually kind of a remarkably candid interview:

“Yeah, I am. I mean, not in a bad way. I can still play,” Revis said, smiling. “It’s just, I’m breaking down. I’m 31. How many corners are 31 right now in the league? The league’s getting younger. I know [Vikings cornerback Terence] Newman’s still playing [at 38], which is impressive. But I don’t know how he’s doing it.”

...

“I’m not thinking about retirement at this moment,” said Revis, reiterating his hope that the Jets (2-5) can go on a run starting Sunday in Cleveland. “I’ve just got to continue to take care of my body. Some of the past injuries, they linger. They linger.”

...

His reputation as the game’s No. 1 corner and his “Revis Island” moniker came out of those intense, physical one-on-one matchups each week. Now he’s dealing with the consequences.

“I don’t do that no more,” Revis said. “But I did that for a number of years. When you play Cover Zero on some of the best receivers in the world, it takes a toll on your body. And your coaches have confidence to say we trust that you’re going to shut down this guy that had 200 yards receiving and the week before he had [more]. We trust you with that job. So it’s hard. It’s a lot.”

Each new injury presents a challenge for someone who continues to be confronted by his football mortality. But Revis said he understands why he’s often “critiqued” on the same level as quarterbacks.

“I brought it upon myself,” he said, “by playing the game and the position at such a high level for so long.”

Some classic quotes from the GG forum:

"I have seen it all with this team. Just relocate the franchise at this point, team is f**ked for eternity."

"Watching this team is like drinking a couple of gallons of sour buttermilk, chased with some shots of Malort, in the middle of a sewage treatment plant off the Ganges River."

"Are you f**king kidding Me????

Can't say this guy is wrong. This was a horrible game from both teams with a fitting end.

Trouble in paradise?

"A source with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media defensive ends Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson are regularly late or miss team meetings. The source added it happens "all the time," and "definitely" more often than other players on the team.
It is unclear if this was the reason why Richardson and Wilkerson were benched for the first quarter of the Jets' loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. After the game, coach Todd Bowles wouldn't say anything more than it was a "coach's decision," and would not say if it was for disciplinary reasons."
