John Jaso joined Ray Schalk as the only players to ever catch a perfect game (Hernandez for Jaso, Robertson for Schalk) and hit for the cycle. Also in the NL Central tonight, Anthony Rizzo became the first left-handed thrower to play second since Don Mattingly on 7/24/1983.
The line between genius and buffoon is sometimes cloudy.

The Mattingly appearance was the re-start of the Pine Tar Game. Ron Guidry played centerfield.

The left-handed throwing second baseman previous to Mattingly was Cleveland pitcher Sam McDowell

That rainout between the Tigers and Indians could really mess things up, esp if Detroit has to win the game to force a tiebreak.

Speaking of rain, the Cubs-Pirates game was called in the sixth with the score 1-1. That makes it the first official tie game in MLB since 2005.

(per Jesse Rogers, ESPN)

So anyone know what they'd do? Move the Play In game to Wednesday(if rainout makeup is Monday and tiebreak game on Tuesday)?

Also, will they play this game Monday if only playoff HFA is still TBD?

California. Duh.
The Reds just lost to the Cardinals when a run scored from first on what should have been a ground-rule double. It's very clear from the replay that the ball bounced over the wall, hit the back wall, and came back on the field. The Reds were trying to protest the call but the umps had already disappeared.

The Giants potentially get screwed over big time here..

Much of what will happen depends on, of course, the Atlanta Braves.

Detroit ends the season with three in Atlanta -- which sucks for the Tigers, because it takes Victor! out of the lineup. Detroit is just one game behind in the loss column.

Blue Jays 87-72
Orioles 87-72
Tigers 85-73

The Mariners (84-74 before Friday night's game) are still technically alive, but only by the slimmest of margins.

IF the Tigers sweep the Braves, they get to 88 wins -- which means that only sweeps by the Orioles in New York AND the Blue Jays in Boston would render the Cleveland rainout moot -- UNLESS, of course, it matters to the battle between Cleveland and Boston for the No. 2 seed. Cleveland ends the season in KC.

Obviously, the Tigers hopes decrease for any game the Braves win. But so many things have to fall into place for the game not to matter at all, it seems very likely that the Tigers and Indians will have to play Monday -- since it's likely to matter to at least one of them.

Of course, I'm rooting for complete chaos and a three-way tie after Monday's makeup game

MLB now saying game ending challenges must be immediate. In other words quicker than any other less important time of the game.

Four umps blew the initial call then they took off.
So poor. Just bad for the game.
What is "initiate consideration for replay" within 10 seconds? What about umps getting shit right?

Horseshit. Why is it different on a final play than the rest of the game?

Awful rule.

More than anyone, the Mariners were hurt by the Orioles taking two of three in Toronto. Seattle won 3-2 Friday night, but remain two games behind in the loss column.

The Mariners host Oakland for three more through the weekend. If they sweep, they're at 88-74 and would need a) either the Blue Jays or Orioles to go 1-2 and b) the Tigers to go 3 of 4 against the Braves and Indians.

If the Blue Jays and the Orioles both go 1-2, Seattle sweeps and the Tigers win 3 of 4 ... all four teams would finish 88-74.

Amazingly, if the Blue Jays and Orioles go 1-2, Seattle sweeps and Detroit wins all four games ahead of them (including the makeup of the rainout), the Tigers would be the home team in the wild card game ... with the other three tied for the second spot.

One Seattle loss leaves the Mariners needing a) at least one of the Blue Jays/Orioles to be swept over the weekend and b) the Tigers to go 2-2

MLB has said the Tigers-Indians game would be made up Monday if it would determine a playoff spot, or seeding

"In this situation, Bryan Price did not come up on the top step," crew chief Bill Miller told a pool reporter after the game. "We stayed there. I waited for my partners to come off the field. I looked into the dugout, the Cincinnati dugout, and Bryan Price made no eye contact with me whatsoever, and then after 30 seconds he finally realized, somebody must have told him what had happened, and we were walking off the field."

Moving the Line
Travis Wood became the first players to pitch 75+ games and have 3+ games in the field in the modern era. Previously, only Old Hoss Radbourn and Guy Hecker had done so, both in 1884.

Just read about the Cards game. What I'm wondering is why the Reds didn't challenge immediately instead of waiting for the call from upstairs? It's the final play of the game, you don't have to worry about saving your challenge for later, and there's no penalty for being wrong.

From now one, I guess teams will just auto challenge even on a routine play/walkoff rather than worry about not being "fast enough"

We came soooo close in 2007 to the 4 way tie, Even on the last day, 4 teams had to win, 3 did but the Mets screwed it up

hold on... if the Tigers have to play on Monday and that result ends up in a tie for the 2nd WC... the main WC game is on Tuesday night. How the hell are they going to schedule all the necessary tiebreaker games?

From mlb.com (although i'm not sure it helps much):

The Tigers' situation grew more complicated on Thursday, when their home finale against the AL Central champion Indians was rained out. For now, Detroit heads to Atlanta to finish its schedule, but if the missed game turns out to have any postseason implications, it will be made up on Monday. If things go well for the Tigers, that means they potentially could play on Sunday in Atlanta, on Monday back in Detroit, then on Tuesday in Baltimore or Toronto in a tiebreaker game for a Wild Card spot, before Wednesday's Wild Card Game.

Two reasons I can think of that the end-of-game challenge would have to be immediate. One is that when the game ends people start celebrating and pouring water coolers and the media all comes out onto the field, so if the game might continue you'd want to know that right away. This is actually my biggest complaint about replay in sports in general -- it ruins moments of joy that are now always tinged with the possibility that it could be overturned.

The second reason is the one that you are saying here. If there's any possibility of a challenge, no reason to wait for confirmation from the clubhouse if the game is going to be over. What was Bryan Price waiting for? Was he not paying attention to the play on the field?

Adding onto that, as soon as the LF went through with the play, he should have started screaming, running in, signaling ... something. Votto or Brandon Phillips should have corralled the first-base umpire. From what I've read, players are now so conditioned to wait for an appeal from the dugout that they've become too passive.

Rich Hill left after five innings with a 3-2 lead over SF. Brandon McCarthy came in, gave up rocket after rocket, and left without getting an out. It's now 9-3, 7 runs in, still no one out.

A's took the lead after Servais left gas can Cishek in too long, but Mariners tie it on PH RBI by Ben Gamel with 2 out in bottom of 8th. Pretty high drama in Seattle right now.

The A's go back in front 9-8. Mariners will need to rally for the 4th time in the bottom of the 10th to save their season.

4 way tie will require BAL & TOR to lose, SEA to win out and DET to win out.

My guess is BAL & TOR win tomorrow and that will do it.

that's two of the last three seasons Seattle has 86 or 87 wins and is just short. wasting end of Cano's prime potentially.

if Detroit wins tomorrow and we win tomorrow, Cleveland will have to play a must-win team on Monday

That was a great game. M's had the tying run at second with none out and Cano, Cruz and Seager to bat and couldn't get the job done

I really hope not. The smug attitude of some of their fans, some announcers and even a few players that they "know how to win" and can just turn it on when they choose has passed into the insufferable zone.
Although I am hoping they beat the Mets -- because the Giants smugness vs the "genius" of the Cubs would make for a fascinating douche-off
