I wonder if he's playing another season to avoid having to be in the same hall of fame class as Kobe, Duncan, and KG.
The Feb 5 game is nationally televised on ABC at 2 PM.

Those are some impressive career rankings. Don't underestimate the impact Paul Pierce had on this league and certainly on this franchise.
He was great but the retirement tour should be reserved for inner-circle HOFers IMO, and Pierce is not in that category. Zero times 1st team All-NBA, only once finished top 10 in MVP (7th). Would Steve Nash have gotten a ceremony here?
No brainer imo. Nash changes the way the PG positon was played and layed the foundation of freedom for the way todays stars dominate the game. Steph Curry publicly spoke of how he credits Nash for allowing him to be him and play his game rather than the old-fashioned predisposition they were forced into.

Am I the only one who vomits whenever I hear of a playing signing a meaningless "one-day" contract to retire as a member of their old team? It's stupid and dumb. No he isn't retiring a Celtic.....he is playing his final season as an LA Clipper and retiring as a Free Agent. This annoys me.
I can't speak for everyone, but I imagine the "vomit" reaction is pretty much isolated to you.

Its symbolic and I like that he plans to show loyalty to Boston by officially retiring as a Celtic. I believe he is highly regarded around the league so his endorsement of the Celtics can only help in future recruiting efforts.

Yeah I don't see the problem. He got traded away (granted likely with some level of agreement), it's not like he left as a FA for a bigger payday or burned bridges on his way out of town. One day contracts like that are great PR as far as I'm concerned.

For all the good Ray did for us all I can remember is him shooting us out of a ring and being a traitor going to the Heat. I guess that's cynical and negative but that's the first two things I think of right now.

Why the heck should Ray Allen have sentimental ties to Boston? He was the one who sacrificed his usage when he was still at the tail end of his prime to win a championship. Granted he was under contract at the time so when he does become a free agent Allen had every right to find the best place for him. He knew Ainge wasn't going to ride off into the sunset with The Old Three and protected himself as such.
He was a great 3rd wheel and a great role player here making some huge shots on the road to the title. It was a great ride and when the ride ended he did what was best for him......smart man.

Not trying to pick a fight but I'm honestly surprised that's what you remember most about him. Did you not like him when he was here or something? I would guess most people would say the most memorable thing about Ray's time in Boston was his 51 against Chicago, or maybe his drive on Vujacic in the '08 Finals. I assume you're talking about his poor shooting in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals but he also won Game 2 of that series (by shooting an insane 8-for-11 from 3, a Finals record) and by almost every measure was the best offensive player on those teams:

I did like him when he was here, a pro's pro. Not saying it's fair or right but the first two things that popped in my head was his disaster in Game 7 and his going to our biggest rival at the time. It's a part of his legacy.
The spot where I think Ray came up smallest in the 2010 finals was game 3 when he went 0-13. If he made just one 3 that game, the game might have swung to the C's and they would have had a shot, though unlikely, to take the title at home.
My first thought with Ray is always his evisceration of Vujacic. That was a thing of beauty.
For me it was all the missed shots in the 2012 EC finals, followed immediately by going to the Heat. Where he then made a bunch of similar shots for them.
Allen could have come and run it back one more year in Boston. And worked out a no-trade clause with Ainge to control where he would go. That 2013 team would have been a little stronger with him, and Miami would have been weaker.
Also Pierce has said something about this, let me see if I can find it.
Gotta say: I absolutely love that the other C's felt betrayed he left for the Heat – and still do four years later!

Not only did they not have him in it from a commenting standpoint, in the Celts championship pictures at the end, they purposely excluded him. Heck, Leon Powe and Rondo talked. I knew PP and KG were upset with Allen for going to the Heat but it's obvious they haven't buried that hatchet yet.
Enough about that. Simply awesome piece. He was so much fun to watch. Enjoy retirement Paul.

edit- and he's to the right of Pierce in the first picture, he's with Pierce in #2, right in the middle of #3, not in #4. So he's in 4 out of the 5 championship pictures.
The 2008 team is having a 10 year reunion this summer and Ray is not invited. It was put together by Rondo not the organization.
