I saw Brad Miller of the Rays over the weekend had 30 HR and 80 RBI - fairly low ratio there too. Not as extreme as this lol Mets situation though

I realize it's just a quick-hit article, but he should've railed the manager hard for batting a guy with 30 HR and 330 OBP in the lead off spot. Especially in the NL, that's just rank incompetence.

Reminded me of the inverse. Not sure who holds the record, but Tommy Herr's 1985 had 110 ribbies with only 8 homers.
Pre-1920, the record is held by Hughie Jennings with 121 RBI and 0 homers in 1896.

Post-1920, the record is held by Pie Traynor who had 103 RBI and 2 homers in 1931. Traynor also had 124 with just 3 homers in 1924.

Well, it is Terry Collins. He sorta defines rank incompetence.

One of the side effects of Collins's lineup construction is that Noah Syndergaard is one of the Mets top 10 offensive players. That... is very hard to do in the DH era, in either league.

True, though David Kingman was no slouch at having his HRs count for as little as possible.

1975 36 HR 88 RBI
1976 37 HR 86 RBI

The piece is lacking, IMO, in that it does not provide any context for Granderson's stats. The simple fact is that he has been a terrible hitter with men on base, while being competent with the bases empty. While he cannot control how his teammates perform, if he hit better with men on base then he would have more RBI.

Bases empty: .248 AVG / .342 OBP / .524 SLG / .866 OPS - quite good
Men on: .204 AVG / .311 OBP / .344 SLG / .655 OPS - awful

He has 401 PA with the bases empty and 222 with men on. He has hit 24 HR with the bases empty and 6 with men on. So he has had 55% as many PA with men on as with the bases empty, but only 25% as many HR.

But because of his position in the lineup – batting leadoff, and rarely having teammates on base due to the game situation or to teammate failure – Granderson may set a mark no player will endeavor to break
Nowhere in the article does it blame Granderson, which is a flaw in the article IMO.

The MFY's own Gary Sanchez is making his bona fides with 20 HR and 42 RBI.
Sure but he has the excuse of doing that in a ridiculously low amount of PAs. These other guys have 500+ PAs to drive in runs, Sanchez has 20 HRs in just over 200.

My favorite is Bonds in 2003. Hit .341/.529/.749 with 45 HR..... drove in 90. Of course his problem was having the bat taken out of his hands but some his HR/RBI ratios are hilarious.

Jed Gyorko hit his 29th home run tonight with only 57 RBIs and still has two games to play, so unless the Mets finish their final game before the Diamondbacks (which they might) this may be a record Granderson never actually holds.

I remember a press conference when Rib Deer came to Detroit and Sparky Lyle was going on about how "no seat is safe" and a snotty reporter asked how Deer would help the Tigers barely above .300 OBA average and everybody laughed at the stupid reporter.

Rob deer hit 25 hr and had a batting average of .179 in 1991 and was actually a 1.o war year.
Next year, the year in question, BABIP smiled on him and he hit .247 and was a 3.9 WAR player.

And Gyorko hits his 30th homer today (another solo shot) for his 58th RBI. Unless he has an insane final game, he'll get the record and not Granderson.
