FRANCESA’S FAVORITES

SPORTS TEAM: New York Yankees ("The only team I’ve ever been a fan of is the Yankees and the only idol I ever had was Mickey Mantle.")

SPORTS MOMENT WITNESSED IN-PERSON: Game six of the 1996 World Series (when the Yankees clinched a World Series for the first time since 1978), 1991 Super Bowl (when the Giants won because Bills’ kicker Scott Norwood missed a field goal attempt “wide right”) and game seven of the 1994 Stanley Cup (when the Rangers won for the first time in 54 years)

BOOK: “The best biography of all-time and the greatest book I’ve ever read is David McCullough’s Truman, which won the Pulitzer Prize. I’ve read it three times and would recommend it to anybody. The best sports biography? When Pride Still Mattered, David Maraniss on Vince Lombardi.” (He also pays a guy to find and buy for him every book ever written about John F. Kennedy.)

MOVIE: 1972's The Godfather, 1953's Shane, 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hoodand 1947's Body and Soul. (He’s a SAG-AFTRA member — “and I do like to vote [for the SAG Awards],” he says. The 2015 movie that he backed? Room — “The kid [Jacob Tremblay] should have been nominated. His performance was the best performance I’ve seen on film in five years. I thought it was brilliant and he should’ve gotten the Academy Award.”)

TV SHOW: FX’s The Affair. “I can’t wait for that to come back, I love that show,” he says, adding, "The Housewives stuff is stupid — I mean, I wouldn’t let any of them in my house. That show is deplorable."

SONG: Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69"

MAGAZINE: GQ. "I actually like to keep up on the styles," he says.

RESTAURANT: Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, located across from Radio City Music Hall at 1221 Ave. of the Americas.

HOTEL: The Four Seasons in midtown Manhattan and the Trump Soho.

RECURRING WFAN GUEST: The late George Young, former general manager of the New York Giants.

DUMB ON-AIR CALL: "There have been way too many." (He adds, "I don’t want to hear 'How are you,' I don’t want to know what they had for breakfast and I don't want to hear how great I am — because it’s all bullshit. I also could do without 'First time, long time.'")

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
At least FF can think on his feet:

around 3PM a caller wants to talk Islanders, and gets around to ownership. Mike says he's told that the owner is a real good, stand up guy. Caller asks which of the owners is that: XXX or YYY? Mike's response:

"Uhhhhhhhhhh, I don't wanna say. It'll make the other one look bad."

Pretty sure FF last week said that Nyquist had no chance on Saturday.

(that loud BEEP BEEP BEEP you hear will me Mike backing up from what he said)

EDIT: oh, the favorite won. And the five top pre-race horses all finished in the top five, so it's what was expected. And it's hard to predict the Derby, as none of those horses have ever gone 1 1/4 miles before....evah. And that was it (unless someone calls him on it later today)

Mike ran in to Trump and Trump told him he's one of the few people who has gotten skinnier as he gets older.

I always rag on Mike, so have to be fair to him. Right now, he is at Hofstra, and he is interviewing the students, and he is being very fair, kind, and dare I say, avuncular. Have never heard this side of him. Im guessing that since he never had a Dad, he really shines at BEING a Dad. Fair is Fair, ok now I can go back to ragging on him.

The 718

Mike weighs in on Gorillagate, and unsuprisingly, is on Team Shotgun.

“Can you imagine if that was your child in there? You’re going to have people who are going to say, ‘Wait a second, I’m worried about the gorilla?’ When your kid’s in there, basically, maybe seconds from having his head crushed? We live in a world now where you are going to be more concerned with the gorilla than you are the little boy? What is wrong with you people!?”

He also said that he was hoping to get Bill Simmons on before the show premiere, but the schedules could not work. So he will be on next week.

Dog joining FF today at 4pm
AND it was fantastic. Mike sounded 10 years younger. He has become jaded, miserable, cantankerous, pompous, and just plain nasty. When Dog was on, he was like he was with his high school buddy peeking thru the windowshades at a MILF. Excited, silly, enthusiastic. We really got robbed by Dog leaving.

Went to a 4:15 soccer game yesterday, and he was going on about what a lousy teammate Colin Kap is. When I drove home two+ hours later, he was saying pretty much the same thing. Neither time did I hear him mention the reason for Kap's protest, just lousy teammate, Niners could cut him for ruining team chemistry, etc.

Did he go those two hours on that narrow of an issue?

I'm sure he did. This topic is red meat for sports talk radio.

Edit: No pun intended with Mike.

I'm not referring to general discussion on Kaepernick: all I heard him talk about was the effect it would have on team moarale and how the Niners should cut him. Nothing about the form of protest, nothing about what exactly he was protesting, nothing about others joining him in the protest, nothing about patriotism, ONLY that one small area: how it affected team morale.

And maybe it was my imagination (I was in and out of the car all day), but it seems the only thing he was discussing RE the hits on Cam Newton was to point out ad nausum that Newton and Big Ben are able to extend plays while smaller, lesser runners cant, so exactly when the refs blow a play dead has a huh-yuge impact on Cam and Ben. Not the viciousness of the hits, not the type of hits, not so much the hits going uncalled: just the refs calling the game differently when a big QB who's a decent runner is playing.

Was really looking forward to his show today, ripping the Jets and the Giants, giving the plucky Yankees a pass, ragging on Papi, who must be using drugs to have a great year at 40, but ignoring Jeters great year out of NO WHERE at 37, BUT Mike is droning on and on about....Arnold Palmer. Now, before you jump on me, Im older than most of you, remember Arnie playing on my black and white TV, great guy, kind soul, etc etc. Golf is like pool. A bunch of guys standing around hitting a ball that ISNT EVEN MOVING. When Mike goes on and on and ON about GOLD and Horseracing, I cannot change the channel fast enough.

Dinosaurs love fossils.

We're about to embark on 12 weeks of open Broncos cheering because he probably figures they stand most prominently between us and what must be avoided at all costs. (The Steeler loss undoubtedly frightened and angered him both).

So enjoy the trip down nostalgia lane.

The NFL is week to week. He has three days to talk Yankees and Papi. The Mets will likely be in the playoffs. There will only be one day that comes immediately after the death of a sports legend ... regardless of what you think of the sport. I don't see the issue here

This was my thought exactly. Obviously he's going to spend some time on Palmer, but geez, the whole first hour on a Monday after Giants and Jets both play games that should generate plenty of talk?

This is not just a Francesca thing, but I also feel like Palmer's death is overshadowing Jose Fernandez's. Again, this is not to say that Palmer shouldn't be remembered at a time like this, but the game was 87, wasn't he? Did people think he was going to live forever? Seems like he had a great life - nothing wrong with enjoying it to 87. Now Fernandez on the other hand...
