Awesome. This is going to be fun, even if all we get is some elite PR speed and an exciting AB or two.

Yeah, a couple weeks ago i would have said calling up Moncada seems kind of pointless at this stage of his development. But then I took a closer look at our current third basemen:

Aaron Hil since the trade: .194/.265/.247; 32 wRC+; -0.5 WAR. (And that's after his GWRBI last night)
Travis Shaw in the second half: .189/.267/.360; 63 wRC+; -0.1 WAR

So all Moncada really needs to do to help this team is to break the Mendoza line. Seems doable.

That is the idea yes, if he was worth playing then Moncada wouldn't be coming up.
I think Moncada would be coming up anyway as a pinch runner, but there's a big playing time question and the answer is that Shaw and Hill have both sucked terribly.

It'd have been good for his development to spend a month at the big league level getting acclimated. But with the struggles of Hill/Shaw, he can really help. I'd rather him actually play every day rather than platoon him and Hill but I expect the platoon.

Yeah I'm sure it will manly be a platoon to start but I'm sure they'll get him some ABs vs. lefties at some point.

Anyone have an idea of what the corresponding 25-man roster move might be? There's an open spot on the 40 man roster so that's not an issue? Hernandez seems like the logical person to go down.
Its September(or it will be by then) no need for a roster move.

This is very exciting. Really hope Benintendi can heal before the end of the regular season. Seeing Benintendi and Moncada holding down the 8-9 spots down the stretch would be a real treat. In any event, we have no idea how this will turn out but certainly worth a shot.

Per reports To Be Announced will be pitching that night, I'm not sure what hand he throws with.

I heard Bradford on the WEEI broadcast today and he said that Moncada was being called up as part of a "boost" heading into the end of the season. He was openly wondering why Farrell and the front office did not make a statement saying that his role would be much more than pinch runner / cup of coffee since they do in fact intend it to be at least a platoon against LH pitching. Said 3B production has been "nothing" and needs to be addressed ASAP.

Does this burn an option, or could Moncada still be optioned in 2020 assuming he spends no time in the minors this season after he's added to the 40-man roster?

I'm aware that something has gone terribly wrong if the answer to that question is ever relevant; I'm just interested to know what the rule is.

Why should they make a statement like that? Let's see how well Moncada gets acclimated to the big leagues before penciling him in every day against RHPs.

Once he's added to the 40 man roster it takes an Option to,send him down to the minors again (for longer than twenty days). There will be no need to send him down this year so no option will be burned.

He has three options. The minor league season only lasts for like three more days. He won't be optioned this year.

He might--probably will be--optioned in 2017. If he is then optioned every year, he will be out of options by 2020.

Why should they make a statement like that? Let's see how well Moncada gets acclimated to the big leagues before penciling him in every day against RHPs.
There's no time for that. There is very, very little to be lost in playing Moncada. Third base production has been terrible and the team is looking for something--anything--to give it a little spark to gain three games on Toronto over the next 29 games, preferably over the next 26.

Also, when is the last time a big time prospect made their debut at home? Jeff Suppan?

Wish Blake and Benny weren't hurt. Would be fun to see all the youngsters together. Betts, Bogey, Bradley, Benny, Swihart and Yoan.

I think he plays every day. Hill/Shaw/Holt/Young is a pretty strong bench when Benintendi is back.
I think he hit lefties terribly. It's not likely he's going to be in the lineup against them. He's not here for development, he's here to help win games.

He hit AA lefties terribly, but only had 35 ABs against them. He killed A lefties.

In 2015 he hit .310/.381/.571 against lefties, significantly better than he hit against RHP.
In 2016 A ball he hit .286/.416/.381 against lefties--no power.

So he's had one major issue with LHP--contact rate, even in 2015 when he still put up good numbers against them. Perhaps this is something that, with the big league staff and resources right there, he can figure out quickly.

Hey, if he can do it, I'm all for it.

This is pretty cool. I've seen him here in Portland three times, and was lucky enough to see him hit a homer (one from each side) in two of those games. Raw power is intense - both homers were ropes.

But, yeah, he swings and misses a lot.

In the field, he's very quick, and I saw him make some great plays at second. Never saw him at 3rd.

In general, he was clearly a major league calibre Sea Dog, with the same kind of obvious talent as X, Mookie, Benintendi, etc., who've come through lately and sped past.

Shaw, on the other hand, never seemed like anything special. I was genuinely surprised by his rapid assent.

Does he need to be added to the 40 man roster before midnight tonight for playoff eligibility? Or is that just for new organizational acquisitions?

I was in Oakland in 1996 for Nomar's first games, and I'm going to all 3 games this series. I splurged for better tickets than I should've for Friday for Papi's farewell – getting to see Moncada's debut is a pretty nice cherry on that sundae.

Anyone in the organization as of midnight 8/31 can replace an injured player on the playoff roster.

The Sox have five players on the 60 day DL.

Weren't we looking for a nickname for this crew at some point instead of the Killer B's?

I wasn't old enough but I can only imagine this was what it was like in '75, watching all the kids fill the lineup card, with a couple vets sprinkled in for seasoning. You old men had it good.

The 67 team was younger. Yaz was the greybeard among the regulars ... he was 27

So when does Shaw board the Plantier/Willowbrooks shuttle to the Padres organization?

This must have been amazingly fun teams to watch and grow with. I gotta go with 75 tho, 3 HoFers, another that should be in and another that would have but for injuries. Plus Tiant? Yeah I'll take 75.
