wat? I know we could use a left fielder, but really? He's actually pretty decent vs righties. I'm just amazed he made it all the way through the NL, and up to us.

Edit: Rusney is definitely not raking in AAA, so he's a lost cause at this point.

Owed $14M over the next two years, so it's not a horrible contract to take on if the Dodgers want to just let him go (I'm assuming they don't). Decent hedge against not getting Benintendi back the rest of this year if they think his performance in AAA is real. Could be useful going forward as a trade chip or depth allowing them to trade someone else. I can see why they'd risk the claim even if their primary motivation is simply keeping him out of Toronto.

Wonder if Papi's leadership on team would have a positive effect on Puig's behavior issues, as well as Boston not being LA.

With him playing in AAA what could the Dodgers ask for him? This isn't a DFA where the Red Sox would only pay the minimum, the Dodgers can simply unload the whole contract on the Sox (maybe they can get a kid for him, but he would also have to clear waivers.

The Red Sox could just make the trade as a PTNBL and send them to the Dodgers in the offseason.

Strange thread, the closest thing to a realistic report on this is Ken Rosenthal saying that the Indians were the ones who claimed him, which means Boston passed:

This might not be a real tweet

His remaining contract is for $14M plus whatever he gets paid for September. That's total over two more seasons. Not each year. The Dodgers have zero incentive to dump his contract. They will either get a decent prospect (or more) back, or they'll keep him.

I doubt they would ask for a kid on the 40-man, so no waivers required.

It's still news in that the Sox either have some interest in him (and yes, I know that doesn't mean they'll work something out for him) or are working to block him from going somewhere else (like Toronto).
The revocable part isn't news...which is what I think AB in DC was asking re: the news. I wasn't saying this isn't news.

Me in this thread...

Prior to the initial tweet of the Red Sox possibly claiming Puig: "No thanks. This guy is a train wreck."

After reading Puesan's tweet that the Red Sox claimed Puig: "Wow. This actually might be great. Puig has serious talent and he's coming cheap. I love this move!"

After finding out the Red Sox didn't get him: "Good. I didn't want any part of this guy's drama."

Wouldn't Adrian Gonzalez have had as much of a chance to do that when he was with the Dodgers? Sounding moot anyway.
Maybe, but I doubt it. I obviously know neither AGon or Papi personally, but AGon didn't trike me as much of a leader when he played on the Sox, more of a to-himself kind of guy. Papi obviously relishes and excels at the role of mentor, role model and veteran team leader.

Of course, in order for The Punto Trade to go through, the Dodgers had to claim the throw-ins
The Dodgers only claimed the players they wanted, Gonzalez and Beckett. The other two cleared waivers.

The Dodgers recently won the claiming rights to Gonzalez and Beckett. Gonzalez can't block a trade to Los Angeles, but Beckett must approve any assignment as a player with ten and five rights. Crawford and Punto cleared waivers earlier this month and can be traded without waiver-related restrictions.

It was the A-Gon claiming, specifically, that was 'reported' as news, an act which was shat all over by many people named Jim, Bo, and Sox9 as being a waste of the internet space it was printed on. So, I'm not saying there's fire, or even smoke, here...but I've learned my lesson.

It was an NL club that won the claim on Puig and they did make some attempt to trade for him. Multiple teams put claim in.

So Boston didn't actually get him, and it's a moot point anyway now that it's September. I'm going to lock this.
