Interesting. I'm suddenly realizing I have no idea what a sprain actually is. Internet definitions make it sound like a word that can encompass a pretty broad range of injuries.
It's so broad that it's almost meaningless in a vacuum. Includes mild stretching of a ligament all the way through complete rupture, just depends on the grade.

If someone says it in a positive way (i.e just a sprain), almost always means the lower end of the spectrum, as apprently in this case. Even stretching or microscopic tearing (Grade 1) to me means the structure was damaged, but people can argue on the semantics.

"When you think back and look at the video, this could've been much, much worse," manager John Farrell said. "Lucky that the ACL is not involved. He'll be back as soon as first available, and optimistically, we're thinking that could still be the regular season."

The tests -- another MRI exam, an X-ray and a CT scan, according to Farrell -- confirmed what the Red Sox already believed: that there isn't structural damage to the ligaments in Benintendi's knee. The injury has been classified as a sprain, and Benintendi described himself as "fortunate" and "pretty lucky" that it isn't more severe.

Very illuminating. Thanks as always.

Anyone in favor of claiming Desmond Jennings off release waivers to see if the team can catch lightning in the bottle? At least defensively he's better than Holt when healthy.

As Debbie Downer wouid say "Didn't they say Swihart had a sprain?". Let's hope this one really is.

The bolded is the key, no? He's played five games since the start of July due to various injuries, and he's still currently on the DL (at least until the release is official).

He might be worth a minor league contract and a spring training invite if this was February, but as it's the end of August, I don't see it being worth a 40-man spot.

Sorry for the delayed response here, but to me "no structural damage" means a grade 1 sprain - no actual disruption of the ligament (most likely the LCL) but intrasubstance inflammation. That means his return will be determined by his level of comfort in being able to get back to baseball activities - could be a week, could be three or four depending on how he responds to treatment. Shouldn't be any long-term issue in terms of his health, thankfully

And thank the baseball gods he rolled his ankle- if his foot had been solidly planted he probably would have torn up his knee beyond all recognition

Yeah, it was his knee not his ankle.
Plus.... as DRS alluded to, there is no chance he can be classified as "no structural damage" and potentially returning for the regular season with a grade 3 sprain of one of this knee ligaments. So there are multiple reasons not to start wondering about how a grade 3 ATFL ankle sprain (complete disruption of the entire ligament) correlates to Benintendi.

Even though I never saw any grade specified, it's safe to assume the team believes he has a low grade nonsurgical and likely short term injury (grade 1 or perhaps at most grade 1/2).

Benintendi won't be sliding back into the lineup anytime soon. 3rd/4th week of September seems pretty optimistic at this point.

@PeteAbe
Andrew Benintendi is at least two weeks away from any sort of baseball activities. But #RedSox still hopeful is play again this season.

I was at the game and Benintendi looked great in BP. The ball was really jumping off his bat, including a deep homerun to right center that really carried in a way you don't see balls in that part of the park do very often, so not just going through the motions to test it out, but putting some 100% bat speed swings on with pleasing results.

I wonder what the time frame would be for the rehab assignment. As of tonight it's been two weeks exactly since the injury.
Playoffs start tonight, so pretty much in the next day or two. They only play a best of three for the championship (Spinners and Salem).

I was going to lament the Sox rushing him back, but if he's going to be a real contributor on a playoff roster, he needs a couple weeks to get back into a rhythm.

Benintendi out running the bases in Toronto this afternoon. Seems to bode well for him being in the lineup very soon.

Here is Benintendi running. Doesn't seem like quite game speed. But looks pretty good. pic.twitter.com/aHdPo028ia

According to Farrell, Beni is back to running at game speed. Weei.com link to full article.

“[Friday] was a very good day for him,” Farrell said. “Feels like he’s running at 100 percent intensity. The one last thing with baserunning that we have to accomplish is just getting him to slide. So we’ll look t getting him on a sliding pad tomorrow at the earliest. It doesn’t get us anymore clarity on when he might be first activated, but the fact that he’s had no pushback from the knee when he’s ramping up the work, he’s in a good spot right now.”

That would be huge if they could get Benintendi about 12-15 games to get the rust shaken off. Really deepens the lineup vs RHP.

What's his role now? Just a defensive replacement, or will he see some righties? Pretty hard to pull Young for anyone at the moment.

Globe:
At the least, Young will continue to get regular at-bats against lefthanded starters, and Farrell said that the Sox will proceed gradually with Benintendi after three weeks of downtime. The manager also said that Benintendi could be used to spell Jackie Bradley Jr. in center and Mookie Betts in right, a scenario that would permit the Sox to feature a lineup with both Benintendi and Young.
