On the other hand, Chapman and Miller were signed for postseason reasons and now they're both gone because the team hasn't done anything in the postseason. So that's a huge fail on Cashman's part.
But at the same time, he also obtained Chapman for next to nothing and turned that pittance into some pretty nice prospects

Chapman was primarily traded for as an arbitrage play, which is exactly what ended up happening. Buy low, sell high.

It's amazing what you can accomplish with little more than the moral fiber to buy low on a guy with domestic abuse issues.

The Yankees really needed to do this. Judging by what I am seeing on message boards and hearing on the radio, It looks like most of their fans are OK with it. Realize that no position players on their current roster (other than Gregorious and possibly Castro) are likely to be productive major leaguers in a year or two. Everyone else is either going to be traded, retired or fall off a cliff (Ellsbury). The Yankees are definitely going to need some of their guys in the minors to come up and be productive really soon. I suspect we will see Judge and Sanchez any day now?

The Sox have a lot of nice pieces in their farm system but it is a bit of a luxury since so many of their starters are already very good/great players approaching their primes.

It makes me sick they were able to parlay Chapman into those young players from the Cubs (and get Warren back to boot). And to top it off, the Cubs only have Chapman for 2-3 months. There is an excellent chance he will be back in the Bronx next season. That's baseball I guess. What can you do. Unless the Cubs win the WS, Theo is going to look like a schmuck for making that trade.

The Indians gave up a lot, but at least Miller will be there for several years at reasonable money.

Why will Theo look like a schmuck? Torres is the big prize in that deal, and he was blocked. There is literally nowhere for him to play any time soon in Chicago. Sheffield, Heller and Feyereisen are all nice pieces, but they're all lotto tickets. The Cubs are a favorite for the World Series this year. Their one weakness is the pen. This is a prime example of relative value. The Cubs gave up expendable chips to make sure the Yankees didn't take Chapman right up to the deadline to allow another team to sneak in and steal the deal away.

He looks like a bigger schmuck if he doesn't make this deal and the one weakness on this team costs them the chance at a world championship. In THIS situation, this is where Torres' biggest value to the Cubs lies. I also don't think Chapman is a rental, I have to believe that Theo will make every effort to sign him and if the money's close, Chapman's not going to find a better situation as far as winning goes. The everyday lineup is stacked for years to come. Where does Torres fit in? Also remember that they have Schwarber coming back as well.

NYY has gone from solid to top 3 farm system by trading 2 relief pitchers. Cashman's killing it.
If they don't want to be playing to empty seats in Sept they have to start playing kids.Only possible source of excitement in the Bronx.

So in essence, the Pirates traded a year of Neil Walker and half a year of Antonio Bastardo for half a year of Jon Niese and a year and a half a year of... Antonio Bastardo.

Rizzo deserves a lot of credit. At a time when closers/dominant relievers are being traded for multiple valuable assets (the Kimbrel trade, Giles trade, Miller trade, Chapman trade to the Cubbies), the Nationals acquired Melancon and gave up only T.Hearn (a lotto ticket) and F.Rivero. While Rivero has excellent stuff and the ability to develop into a dominant reliever, he falls short of the potential value of such prospects as C.Frazier and G.Torres. True, Melancon is a free agent after the season, but so is Chapman and this didn't stop the Yankees from acquiring an impressive package of prospects for a two month rental.

If I'm the Indians GM, I'm not making that trade with the Yankees. Instead, I'm calling the Pirates and making an offer for Melancon and then I'll reevaluate the bullpen in the off-season.

It's hard for AL fans to forget what Melancon did in both of his AL stints, first coming up with NY (although they didn't give him much of a chance) and then in 2012 with Boston when he had a 6.20 ERA. Obviously he's been dominant in PIT for almost four seasons since and maybe he'll continue to be, but if I were a Nats fan, I'd feel way more comfortable with Miller coming in to protect postseason leads than Melancon.

True, and I would rather have Miller than Melancon, but. . . .not at the cost of the prospects that the Indians gave up. Even though I would rather have Miller (or Chapman for that matter), I'm still feeling good about Melancon based on some of the changes he has made since his stint with the Red Sox: greater reliance on the cutter.

An interesting piece on Melancon: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/the-pitch-that-brought-mark-melancon-to-the-washington-nationals/2016/08/04/a213c624-5a7c-11e6-9aee-8075993d73a2_story.html

Not going to start a new thread for waiver trades, but a lefty reliever with a 3.62 FIP traded for the 17th-ranked prospect in the Nationals organizations seems like an absolute bargain for Washington.
Funny, I would have categorized that as a bargain for the A's since Zep has been on and off the scrap heap for years. And has a really ugly walk rate this year. And hasn't exactly been vintage Javy Lopez against LHBs this year either (226/400/274)

The Dodgers have added another Phillies stalwart, bringing in veteran catcher Carlos Ruiz via trade. In an interesting twist, Los Angeles will send its own long-time backstop, A.J. Ellis, back to Philly in the swap.

The Phillies will also pick up some other assets in the deal. Young righty Tommy Bergjans is on his way to Philadelphia, along with a player to be named later or cash considerations.

I'm guessing Papelbon isn't joining any team at this point?

Season likely over, because he'll just take up a roster spot.

How's his career looking?

Did any live arm pass through waivers? And can dumbrowski acquire him without reading a top 15 prospect?

ANY live arm. That can record an out in the sixth, seventh or eighth innings.

Can Puig pitch?

Yep. Still something stupider on this board than asking if callups are eligible for post season play
Can they still trade for a guy and him be eligible for the postseason? How's that?

Mets got a middling reliever for nothing. Only arm traded. So the answer was likely no. So unless Koji returns expect to see a lot more of Barnes and Taz and abad in the 6-8th

This is still my favorite statement of SoSH 2016, sorry for bumping it again:

AJ Preller is the best GM in baseball. Period.

MLB announces 30-day suspension for #Padres’ Preller without pay. Related to Pomeranz trade with #RedSox.

This is Preller’s second suspension by MLB. First was for one month in late 2000s when he was head of #Rangers’ international operations.

More info on what SD/Preller did to deserve this:

sounds like Padres may be better off firing him...perhaps Mike Dee reunites with Cherington over there?
