Newcastle United 2016-17: Championship Material

Time for a new thread

Newcastle has friendlies scheduled at Corby Town in something called the "Steel Cup" against PSV Eindhoven and Corby Town for July 23/24. In Newcastle fashion, however, they previously tentatively scheduled a friendly at Sporting Club Lokeren in Belgium on July 24. Either that is getting moved/scrapped or they will do a three-way split squad for three matches over two days in two locations. The laughs never cease.

Pulling this from last season's thread
The more I'm thinking, the more positive I am about having Benitez. I still think the Championship will be much harder than last time you were here, but Rafa staying will be a big boost. I think it may take a bit for him to acclimate to the league, but his presence may stop or at least slow some of the flood out (I've heard virtually everyone from Coloccini to Sissoko to Perez are interested in playing at a higher level. And you know people will bid for a guy like Lascelles. Maybe Ashley won't sell on any, but then you'd have some disgruntled players). I think the odds of top 6 are very good.
Oddsmakers have them at 4/5 to go up so ideally we can avoid the playoffs, but the fixture list will be tighter and everyone will want the scalp. And then if they keep Mitrovic, he's prone to hotheadedness and teams are going to try to get in his head and get him tossed. It would be nice if they could get a veteran forward so Mitro can come off the bench, at least on the road.

Keeping Rafa is the most positive thing that's happened since I started following NUFC maybe 15 years ago. I still can't believe he's staying. They spent a week and a half on his contract, and he and his lawyers made sure his contract states he has full control and doesn't have to sell anyone solely because Ashley wants to sell. He can sell and keep as he chooses. If a player wants out, I mean, there's little Rafa can do other than try to convince the player to stay, but if he wants the player and the player wants to stay he doesn't have to sell. He can also build in his own scouting staff, including some who were at Liverpool when he was there

The nice thing is contract wise, a lot of guys like Wijnaldum, Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles and Mitrovic are signed into 2020, so they should fetch a decent number if they are sold. The only player of note out of contract is Taylor. The bad thing is no one had a relegation clause so they are on EPL-level wages, so some players are bound to be sold. Edit- Another thing: players may be loaned to EPL clubs to save wages but also be available to come back if they are promoted.

I really do not want to lose Lascelles. He's a leader in the making. He really showed the difference between McClaren and Benitez. Lascelles only played 4 league matches before January. After that McClaren played him more but at both CB and FB. Rafa comes in, sticks him at CB, almost every match, and he held down the spot with aplomb. McClaren was really wedded to the veterans too much.

I think things would have fallen apart if Rafa had left.

For your sake I hope things work out...Best case scenario Newcastle bounces back up while giving some real solid young talent (Lacelles, Perez, Mbemba, Armstrong) the playing time to develop into quality PL players. I guess I'm just surprised at how many Newcastle fans see this as the only thing that will happen. I have too much time spent around a hilariously self flagellating fan base I guess.

Mea Culpa if I'm wrong about the Championship. It's quite possible I over estimate its challenges.

Edit: Didn't realize this was a new thread. Too big for the Championship Thread, huh? :bagd:;)

Just announced a friendly at Bohemians July 16th.

How many of us can crash on TonyThePony's floor at the same time?

Steven Taylor was not tendered a contract. He was the longest serving player, signed way back in 2003. IIRC, he's also the most recent player to get an England call-up. End of an era

A shit one. I had so much hope for him but he was never actually good.

The best thing about Rafa is he knows how to build a team, from the back. Something that no Newcastle manager in my lifetime seems to have figured out (except maybe Big Sam but his physical route one schtick is so negative IMO)

@jkempa, any scouting report on Dwight Gayle?
I'll give you my not-so-expert review: Very good when in front of the net. He was the best pure goal-scorer on Palace for all the few years I've watched them. So many Palace players can't finish -- Gayle always could, and the more I watch the game, the more I see that as a rare skill. But he's not that big a target and isn't super-skilled with hold up play. Most people thought he'd be much better in a 4-4-2, and when he played in that formation, he seemed much more effective to me. But he often struggled as a lone striker. He's a hard worker, definitely puts in his shift, but is prone to the occasional boneheaded mistake. He never seemed to get Pardew's confidence. Even when he had a really good run of form late in the season, it seemed like Pardew kept him in the starting lineup so that he'd have a bad game -- and a good excuse not to start him for the FA Cup final -- while he rested everyone else.

The general view on him is he's a AAAA player, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him knock in 15 goals in the Championship. I think that this is a really good move for him and hope he does well. I'm also surprised that he went for (I think) the same fee as Cabaye did last year. I'm really happy Palace got so much for him. Hopefully good for everyone involved.

Maybe I'll buy a shirt next season
Newcastle are reportedly set to ditch controversial shirt sponsors Wonga.
The Magpies will not seek to renew their deal with the payday loan firm at the end of this season – and are looking a new club sponsor.
The famous black and white shirt has carried the Wonga logo for the last three seasons as part of a four-year £24m package.
But it will end in May, at the latest, with the net being cast wide for a fresh corporate deal, according to The Mirror.

That is great news. I hated seeing that crappy thieving logo on the jersey.

Also, it looks like they finally bought a center back(Hanley), so today shaping up as a great day of business for Newcastle. I think the overhaul is going well, and there is still more money to spend after the Gini deal.

Also signed Clark as another defender from Villa. And Diame from Hull.

I'm delighted to see the fans buying back in as Rafa has been given real control. They HAVE to get back up this season and assuming they do things probably will be brighter than 2 years ago. Because they have the best manager since what Robson? Total fan buy in and Rafa has control. If they take ti away he'll walk and the fans will revolt. So finally some hope.

they sold more season tickets this year than last!! Amazing

I will add that those last two signings are not in the NUFC squad on their own f ing website, despite links to the signings elsewhere. How hard is it for a club this size to have their own website have an accurate squad on it the day of the first game of the season. Holy shit.

Fulham, despite their record last season, actually had a pretty solid young squad and showed some real spark last season. Of course with McCormack and Dembele out, I'd adjust my predictions on today's game a bit...I'm going to suggest a 5-0 win for Newcastle. Not the start they expect, but I'm sure they'll recover.

Haven't been out of the drop zone since last winter so it feels good!

All four goals by newboys, Gouffran also played well. If he can continue to play well on the left that would be a boon.

Gonna win this League Cup match against Cheltenham, but fuck this game. Gayle, Mitrovic and Aarons all injured. Gayle came on for Mitro and then got hurt. I'm just following the live text so hoping these are precautionary.

Pretty sure you can just go sign four new quality players to cover for any injuries.

FTR what I saw made it just look like some head knocks, not anything serious.

Aarons is likely done for the season. He had to be stretchered off and was in tears. No contact on the injury, so probably not good. Mitro seemed to have a concussion so he'll be a doubt for Saturday, but not beyond. Not sure about Gayle.

DeAndre Yedlin was at the match and should complete his move tomorrow.

Interestingly, after Janmaat's transfer goes through the transfer account will be net-positive. This club had a lot of guys to offload. Still more or less have to sell Sissoko, Tiote, Riviere, and Saivet, so there should be even more money coming.

If/when Judge gets back up to speed (heard he may not be back until January, and it may take a bit to get game fit coming off a busted leg) he's going to be very, very good. A star at this level.

Yedlen obviously has the tools to dominate going forward, we'll see if he is utilized for the best.

This really is ridiculous.

Yedlin lived in Newcastle when he played for Sunderland last season http://www.themag.co.uk/2016/08/deandre-yedlin-explains-reasons-signed-newcastle-united/
“I definitely heard things about Newcastle, saw things about Newcastle and, funnily enough, when I was at Seattle I played with Obafemi Martins, so he obviously had some stories about Newcastle.

“He just said playing here was one of his most enjoyable times, and when I went to Sunderland last year I thought about the area, and I could see why – the area is unbelievable up here, and it’s a big reason why I decided to come back up and start with Newcastle.
“I lived at Baltic Quay last year and I had a great time there, it’s close to the city of Newcastle, so you could walk in for food at any time and my family loved it when they visited.

“I know they’re excited about my move back here, so I’m just excited to get started.

“I loved the city when I was up here, so I’m excited to see more of it and experience what it’s like to be a Newcastle player.

Ho hum, two more transfers in, Daryl Murphy in from Ipswich, Achraff Lazaar from Palermo, each for 3m pound. Murphy is 33, but he did have 10 goals and 5 assists last season, and already has 2 assists this year in 4 matches. Don't know much about Lazaar, but he's 24 and seems speedy. Really makes LB competitive.

Alan Judge's move looks at best delayed and at worst scuttled completely.

Sissoko talking to the French press like he's making coffee. It doesn't seem to be helping his transfer out. He's not getting run, and it's hurting his value. Wijnaldum and Janmaat were more professional about wanting out.

11 purchases. It's really is absurd, especially given that the transfer account is still net positive

It remains to be seen whether they've picked the right individuals, but the asset class weighting so far has been excellent. It's a nice mix of gritty Quad A guys and younger upside guys who might grow into being Premier League players if they go back up.

Back into a playoff spot!

Well patience paid off 30 million for Sissoko in the end.
Pretty amazing, Rafa sold 3 mildfielders who got relegated for nearly 80 million
He's completely remade the team, got rid of anyone and everyone with questionable work ethics and made 30+ million on top.

I'm not sure the team is worse! Cheaper, better and got paid for it. Now just go win the championship.

Sounds like a slightly BS 30M. It's payable in 5 annual installments of 6M each, and per the Standard it sounds like the payments are tied to Sissoko's continued presence on Spurs' roster. But the basic point remains that they've rebooted the team and still have some net money left to go shopping in January if need be.

So as I read that I see nothing about the on the roster part.
ALL premier league transfers are accounted for this way. So it makes no actual difference to the accounting impact if they pay 6m for 5 years, or 30mm upfront and then it gets accounted for as 6m/ year.
The implication Newcastle gets less if he leaves makes no sense, as it would mean if Spurs sell him for nothing next year Newcastle gets only 6m.
Let's remember that Everton were bidding 30mm too. So why would Newcastle accept the worst case interpretation?

I can imagine 6m a year plus some sell on agreement. But I don't believe for one second that it's 6m/ year and Spurs have a free out whenever they want.

I hear you, but from that link:

Sissoko was valued at £30million and Tottenham finally agreed to meet that price, although the structure of the payments means Newcastle would receive the full fee — in five instalments of £6m — only if he stays for the duration of his five-year contract.
It's entirely possible that the report is wrong, though--papers seem to get contract details wrong all the time.

As in the general thread if they move him they have to pay newcastle the balance, but of course they can get that potentially back from who they sell him on to.
So it's 30mm for newcastle regardless.

Gouffran with a superb volleyed goal from a corner. So glad to see him revitalized, he always plays hard and has versatility but was often stranded on the bench.

The difference in set pieces this season is incredible

I think we'll learn a lot about this team when they play Wolves again in the League Cup tomorrow. They played a stinker against Wolves on Saturday, lost 2-0 and went down to 10 men later on. Hardly anyone played well. Last season had a lot of hangovers after bad games, and we'll see how Rafa adjusts or if Wolves really found something to exploit

Mike Ashley had a less than favorable appearance on a BBC morning show today
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/youd-surprised-how-little-knew-11910083
Mr Ashley appeared on the BBC One breakfast show in his first live TV interview since he was grilled by MPs over ‘Victorian’ working conditions at his company.

The NUFC owner repeated the defence he gave to the select committee, insisting he hadn’t known it was happening.

“You would be surprised how little I really knew what was going on, and I think that is really where the failing was,” he said.
The tycoon hit headlines earlier this month, after a gaffe during a PR tour of his warehouse saw Ashley emptying his pockets for a security check to reveal wads of £50 notes.

draw at Aston Villa 1-1. Villa scored in the equalizer in the 89th minute. We blew about 3 good scoring chances toward the end of the first half, including Gayle 1v1 with the keeper.

Unreal comeback at the very end- Gouffran atones for giving away a penalty earlier, Gayle nets his third at the finish to cement a 4-3 win after being down 1-3 earlier in the half. Scenes!
