Benintendi back on the roster

Your assumption that he'd score from 2nd on a single assumes that he's getting a healthy secondary lead, not standing flat-footed next to the bag. The line between getting a good secondary lead and "[making] the break for 3rd base" is a blurry one. Without question, Benintendi was a couple steps too far from the bag, but it's common even for runners who are doing everything right in that situation to need to cut abruptly back to second on a hard-hit grounder to third or short; the fact that I can't remember ever seeing an injury on that play tells you how freakish AB's injury was. Suggesting that he somehow brought that injury on himself betrays a lack of understanding of how split-second decisions are made on an athletic field.
1) He's an above-average runner. How much of a secondary lead does he need? I will grant you that on AstroTurf, a sharply hit ball does make it closer at home plate.

2) It was not a hard-hit grounder. It was a bouncer to short. Right in front of him.

3) I've been on 2nd base plenty of times in that situation. You don't make that break.

I do agree that it can be a blurry line between secondary leads and trying for third, but it looked like he was going, not getting a secondary. Also agree that I've never seen an injury on that play. Look, I'm a fan of the kid. But it was bad baserunning. Even he admits it.

Edit: If you don't want to put the blame on him, there's always the coaching staff. Shouldn't there be some clear communication between the base coaches and runners in that situation?

Not ready to die on this hill. Just really bummed about the injury. Kid was an exciting player.

Since this is a message board and there's really only two people here in this thread who's posts are worth the bandwidth they're taking up, I'm going to offer my worthless opinion. Watching the video it didn't look that bad. He's going to rest for a week and a half, do some rehab for two weeks and be back doing baseball stuff, playing games for the big league club less than one month from today. Book it.

This team's LF sure seems snakebit this year.

There are actually three doctors who have given their opinions in this thread.

Close

Then, one August night, the kid in right
lay sprawling in the dirt
The fastball hit him square, he's down
Is Tony badly hurt?
Unfortunately, the next line is:

The doctors say
"He'll be okay,
but he won't be back this year."
With Tony through,
What will we do?
Who'll carry us from here?

Cue the Mookie Betts music...

“@brianmacp: Farrell: Red Sox doctors are still reviewing the Benintendi MRI. ”Too early to tell“ if the injury is season-ending.”

This just really sucks. He absolutely provided a spark to the team. He was playing that 2007 Ellsbury and 2013 Xander post season push role.

Wishful thinking that he'll be back this year.

If that quote is not just a way to stall, that's semi-promising I suppose. All the LCL talk (which I agree with) has me very worried about ACL and/or posterolateral corner injuries since isolated LCL (unlike MCL) is pretty rare.

But if there is actually some debate about the MRI maybe his ACL isn't completely blown to bits after all, since that wouldn't be hard to tell or take more than a few seconds to figure out. Perhaps we are in the dreaded "partial ACL" tear zone and his rolled ankle did soften the blow somewhat. All just speculation of course....

In some (extremely few) computers, three circuits are used in critical areas. If the first two disagree, the third is used to make the decision. Of course, The result is a lot simpler (it's either a 1 or a 0).

Praying for this goombah (half goombah?), waking up 3 or 4 times last night thinking about him.

I'm not too heart-broken that Shaw is struggling so much, as I don't want the FO to give any thought to the idea of handing the open Defense Against the Dark Arts position to Yoan Moncada should Beni's injury prove to be long-term.

Could conceivably use Moncada at 3B, and use a Shaw/Holt combo to platoon/share with Young in LF.

And love the Potter reference for our cursed LF position.

So who comes up now? Please not Brentz. Castillo is rumored to have gotten his shit together in AAA, but if management weren't convinced nobody would blame them. Maybe Kelly?
Marco Hernandez is the one that got called up today. Presumably, that makes Holt the LHH left fielder once again.

Whenever this happens late in the season, I get the Jim Rice 1975 flashback. Different circumstances I know, but the end result was the loss of a key component of the team. Obviously, Rice's loss hurt more because of what he had done the entire season, but you get my point.

So if Young is in LF and Shaw is at 3B, the Sox could have an all-H bench:
Hernandez
Hill
Holaday
Holt

I'm probably the only person who thinks this is notable.

Heath Hembree has taken note of this as well as Betts, Bradley, Bogaerts, Benintendi, Barnes, Buchholz and Brian Bannister. It hasn't been lost on Pedroia, Price, Porcello or Pomeranz and Rodriguez, Ramirez and Robbie Ross have also noticed a trend here.

Can they just field 8 and leave LF open? I don't want to risk anyone else out there.
