"They seemed to really want you"? The other 7 teams didn't make it seem that way?? The Rangers are the Bruins of the Mid-Atlantic. They have big contracts yet are underachieving and don't have too many prospects on the cusp of helping them out. It "seems" like he just didn't want to play in Boston.

He got promised the most ice time in a situation close to home. I think it's a shitty choice, but whatever.

He's going to be a good player, and hopefully he comes home at a solid but below average contract in three years.

Well, we learned today that this choice wasn't about hockey. It was about being 23 in a huge city with a lot of money and a fair amount of anonymity. He won't play in the top 6 in NY, he won't contend for a title. They won't pay him on his second contract unless he outperforms all of our expectations because they have too many long term commitments and similarly aged players that will need to be extended first. They also have noone in the pipeline that will make them any better over the next few years, despite not having room to upgrade their talent pool. Gorton even said earlier this year that he is trying to rebuild the team without completely blowing it up. Hello 2000's Maple Leafs. It's really the worst hockey situation of any of his options. I think Haggs and Murph are full of shit, so I don't really think its because he's afraid (but maybe he is), so it has to be the lure of the city. I like Vesey as a player so I wish him success but this is a choice that changes my opinion of him a little bit.

Does this mean you're NOT Johnny Bucyk?

Hey, we're probably not as butt hurt as the L.I. contingent pissed about McAvoy as a Bruin. So we've got that going for us.
I hope it was all taken in good spirits. There is a fair amount of chop busting around here, but I feel that we are better than most about not taking it personally.I guess that comes with the sport-... Unless you are JulE6. Then you go smash a tee marker and break it, and your driver.

So nothing was meant personally. Will buy you a beer or soft drink if you make it to a RMPS bash.

All is well, not to worry. We'll buy each other beers if I get to one. I do have occasional JulE6 moments but I am not now JulE6, have never been, and if asked will not serve... And I'll never, ever kick the dog. Are there NYC bashes ever?

Disappointing. I think he'll be a solid contributor to the NYR. They should now definitely put Vatrano on Bergy's line, put Belesky with Krejci and Pasta, Backes should center Spooner and Jimmy The Stiff Hayes. Maybe Backes can force more out of Hayes. Acari, Nash and whoever has the best camp on the 4th line. Sweeney should continue to try and upgrade the D prior to the start of the season. I hope he finds a Boychuk type deal.

Florida sends Dave Bolland and Lawson Crouse to Arizona for a couple of draft picks. Crouse is a steep price to pay to shed Bolland's contract.

A Blackhawks blog, in discussing Nick Schmaltz, had this to say:

I don’t know if there’s excitement over Nick Schmaltz’s potential to contribute to the Hawks or more desperation after looking up and down the forwards and realizing he’s about the best chance for any secondary scoring. . . Schmaltz put up the same amount of points as world-savior, poet-laureate, and Nobel nominee Jimmy Vesey, though three years younger and in a tougher conference. So… what was all that fuss about again?
Of course, "the fuss" was that he would get an attractive, market-rate contract (ELC) but wouldn't cost a market-rate draft pick, which was at least a 2nd round pick, probably a 1st round pick.

Is everyone outside of NY rooting against Vesey? I'm not sure he rates that level of attention.

I think that mostly they are. Only big fans were paying attention and many thought their team had a chance to sign him. Now, many are saying he's entitled or not that great of a prospect and its mostly sour grapes.

He was a free asset. Schmaltz cost a first round pick - slight difference! And still their potential is close. Vesey did play in a weak conference but his teammates weren't great statistically. Schmaltz was great this year but he got to play with Boesner who put up 60 points in 42 games as a freshman! As sophomores, Vesey outproduced Schmaltz 0.7 ppg to 0.68 and that Harvard team was terrible. Fans get caught up and every player is a star or a dud. It's likely that Vesey will be a middle line player and that is really valuable when it's free.
