Speaking of names you forgot were still out there, Oliver Perez now pitching for Washington
And Perez gives up a dinger to Starling Marte with 2 outs in the top of the 18th, 2-1 PIT now.

And yet all he seems to do is pinch hit. He's had 2 starts all of July (7/2 and yesterday).
Who should he start over? The three starters are all younger and better than him (Stanton/Ozuna/Yelich). Even with his impressive .829 OPS, he is still fourth out of those four, and obviously they are the future while he is not.

Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes left Sunday's game against the Minnesota Twins because of a right shoulder injury.

On Saturday, the Indians held what second baseman Jason Kipnis described as a "sacrificial ceremony" in the clubhouse before their game against the Twins in Minneapolis, with the hope of helping Gomes end his season-long slump; the catcher had just one hit since June 29 and no extra-base hits since June 25. The team took a page from the movie "Major League," including a chicken offering to the baseball gods.

"I don't think it worked," catcher Chris Gimenez said of the ceremony.

Also in favor of Ichiro mostly pinch-hitting is that the longer it takes him to get to 3000, the more tickets they can presumably sell.
True, although they don't get back home until Friday

Sale with a one hitter through 8 innings, White Sox lead 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth at Seattle.

David Robertson allows a 3 run homer to Adam Lind, Seattle wins. Tough one for Sale.

Bonus: Pedro on the call at MLB network's MLB tonight. And he is angry that in 1999 two guys did not vote for him as MVP. He was asked if he knew who they were and did not answer. Pretty sure he does.
Also, he analyzed Chris Archer very thoroughly. Mr. Henry, the Sox could use him as pitching coach.

Giving up 4 in the 9th to lose 4-3 after scoring one run combined in their previous four games, that is about as bad as a five game stretch can get.

He knows; it's in his book.

Taillon took a 105 mph come backer off the back of his head in the second inning but went on to go 6 innings giving up 5 hits, no walks and one ER.

Prince Fielder neck issues again. Maybe done for the year and then some.
Only about $100 mill left on that contract ( $30 mill of that to be paid by DET).

Rangers placed DH Prince Fielder on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disc in his neck.
Fielder told manager Jeff Banister on Monday that he was feeling the same symptoms he felt prior to undergoing fusion surgery on his neck in 2014. He will visit Dr. Drew Dossett on Friday. Dossett was the one who performed the surgical procedure on Fielder two years ago. A repeat surgery is one possibility and would end Fielder's season, but this picture should become more clear after the slugger has his checkup

If A-Rod does get cut, do you think he'd try to sign with another team just to get to 700?

Of course, and if Miami wasn't in the playoff hunt, he might actually find a team to take him, no DH and all. As it is, good luck.

Would you trade Ted Williams for an extra championship? What about the shot at an extra championship?

I was reading an article about possible Trout trade targets and I was thinking that a Williams trade is a good way to think about where the Angels are now. It seems to me that having a (potential) top 10 of all time player is better than a championship.

Deliberate attempt on his part to kill his trade value? Something stupid that people will laugh at in a week once the trade deadline passes?

Story hit his 27th homerun today.

Rotoworld: "Only two middle infielders in major league history have registered 30-homer seasons by age 23: Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra. Story is well on his way to becoming the third."

Ichiro came to the plate to start the bottom of the first in the game between the Marlins and the Phillies, needing 1 hit to reach 3,000 in his MLB career. He smacked the first pitch deep, deep to right field ... and the Phils' right fielder ran back and jumped to make the catch before crashing into the fence.

Check back again in an hour or so.

Pretty sure he's still at 2,996.
By gum, you are correct. Thank you for correcting me. Just an hour ago, I caught the end of a story on NPR about his quest for 3,000 hits. They surely did imply that he was on the very edge of the accomplishment ... but I guess 2996 _is_ pretty close, isn't it?

Interesting reading today about Sale, and the White Sox skipping out of Seattle w/o paying their clubhouse dues.
Apparently, they are protesting the Mariner's practice of taking 60% of the money and putting it into a managed account.
Sale and Adam Eaton(player rep) met with the asst. GM Jeff Kingston to express their concern that clubby, Jeff Bopp, was not getting the money they were directing to him.

More clubs speaking out now:

Dodgers were up 3-0 through 6 against Arizona, then Arizona scored 7 in the top of the 7th. LA has come back with a pair of two run HRs in the bottom of the inning, 7-7 now, still nobody out.

Giants, down by 3 in the 8th to the Nats just hit into a line drive triple play with the bases loaded. Span took off from third as he didn't think 1b Zimmerman caught the ball cleanly.

Vin Scully just said it was the first 3-3-5 triple play in MLB history.

Moving the Line
Only the 50th time of 708 triple plays that any part of the triple play used the 1st baseman twice, in any fashion, and the first road triple play under the moniker Nationals, got to go back to 9/29/93, at Florida for the last road time for this franchise, a 5-4-3 hit into by Chuck Carr, who had 58 SBs that year.

With San Diego not hitting a home run tonight, they only tie the 1998 Braves for the longest NL streak of games with a home run, with 25. The 2002 Rangers, with 27 such games, are safe with their all-time record.

That triple play was preceded by a couple of moves by Dusty Baker.
The San Francisco Giants (59-44) had loaded the bases with no outs against two Nationals relievers — Oliver Perez and Blake Treinen — and Baker’s first order of business was to change pitchers again. He replaced the right-handed Treinen with the left-handed Sammy Solis to face the left-handed hitting Brandon Crawford. Then he double-switched Ryan Zimmerman into the game at first base to replace Clint Robinson. Baker’s last change was replacing Wilmer Difo with Danny Espinosa at shortstop.. . .“What a triple-double switch by Dusty,” Zimmerman said.. . . “Everybody was screaming in here,” Scherzer said.
