Bob Bradley is currently the favorite to get the Hull City job.
You know what they say -- where there's smoke, there's the English press making stuff up again!

In other news, Pulisic played the second half and scored a last-minute equalizer against Man City in China.

That is tragic goalkeeping.

If one was some sort of soccer version of an obvious political cartoonist, you would draw Lucy doing the football thing with Charlie Brown labeling those entities "English press", "EPL Managment Job" and "Bob Bradley" respectively.

Pulisic also took the 5th PK and had to score to keep it going and converted, although the keeper guessed right and got a large piece of it.

Yedlin and Carter-Vickers started for Spurs v Atletico in Australia. I didn't watch but from what I've read they both looked good. The bigger news is that Yedlin started at LB and looked solid for 60 minutes. Increasing his versatility isn't bad.

Julian Green with a hat trick for Bayern today
Wow! Not what I expected to see coming out of Bayern's preseason. Green has started all five of Bayern's friendlies so far, mostly thanks to the fact that their top forwards have been on a post-Euro break. When Müller and Lewandowski return, his playing time will be reduced significantly or entirely.

But to me, the really interesting takeaway from his experience this preseason is that he's been used exclusive as a true forward. One concern about Green has been that he hasn't been overly impressive on the wing. Though quick, he doesn't have great top-line speed and he's not good enough 1v1 to overcome that, which limits his ceiling at that position. As a forward, he's clearly never going to be a bruising center forward, but he's having success as a guy who can make good, smart runs and find himself open. He managed to net a hat trick against Inter as the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1. Maybe he turns into a rich man's Wondolowski type who is actually useful at the international level? We'll see. If he keeps it up, he's going to play himself into some decent transfer opportunities at least.

So remember when Bedoya said a few months ago that he was considering leaving France and wanted to play at a higher level?
Apparently what he really meant is he didn't care about level at all as long as he got paid..... many many sources saying he is having final discussions to move to MLS.

Bedoya is the US Soccer King of running his mouth on Twitter, then deleting or backtracking from what he said.

He has been linked to various MLS teams repeatedly over the past few years and in some cases, allegedly came very close to making the move before.

  • Toronto reportedly turned down a $5m offer for Bradley.
  • DeAndre Yedlin was omitted from Tottenham's squad for a friendly against Inter, leading to speculation that he will be on the move soon. David Moyes has expressed interest in bringing him back to Sunderland. On the bright side, Cameron Carter-Vickers is still with the first team.
  • Duke and U-20 forward Jeremy Ebobisse is on trial at SønderjyskE in Denmark. He's been making the rounds and seems to really want to go pro instead of returning for his junior season. If he can't find a good fit, he'd have to play NCAA soccer for the fall, then hopefully get a GA offer and go into the MLS draft.
  • Former U-17 forward Joe Gallardo is on trial at Sarpsborg in Norway. He had been with Monterrey, but had fallen off the radar for the last year as he's trying to come all the way back from a broken leg.
  • Attacking midfielder and former U-20 Joel Soñora has featured heavily for Stuttgart during preseason. Perhaps he will get a chance to play a role for the first team now that they are down in the 2.Bundesliga.

James Murphy made the Wednesday bench for their League Cup game at Cambridge today.
And he ended up making his pro debut in the 86th minute, though the Owls' loss in extra time means that he might not necessarily have many more opportunities this season. You'd know the depth chart better than me, but that League Cup squad had a lot of high numbers in it, so I imagine most starters were held out.

Fulham's Luca de la Torre also made his pro debut, starting in their win over Leyton Orient.

Wednesday have strange numbers this year anyways, but yeah...the few guys that would be in league rotation were subbed out, which is how Murphy came in.

Sooo how big a deal is it that Julian Greene apparently made the announced first team roster at Bayern? Does he have a realistic shot of getting the minutes he needs to improve?

Right now it's a big deal because:

1) The first team squad they tweeted out only has 25 players
2) They really don't have that much depth at forward

Green is basically #3 on the depth chart at CF behind Lewandowski and Müller, but Müller is also #1 on the depth chart as an attacking midfielder or second forward. With the current roster and Bayern's annual busy schedule, Green should get a fair amount of playing time off the bench and when Ancelotti rotates the squad.

We won't know for sure until the transfer window closes. Ancelotti could easily be looking for more forward depth and an additional acquisition would significantly change the calculus. If he doesn't, I think that should be taken as a sign that he really does have confidence in Green.

Whatever happens, I think establishing Green as a forward who can make smart/sneaky runs, finish well, and poach goals is a good thing. That's exactly the sort of thing he did when he scored against Belgium. He never looked very good as a winger for the US at any level (senior team or U-23). I had been mentally categorizing him as a winger because of his slight frame and usage out wide, which now seems like a mistake.

That could be the case. But I don´t believe it. That could be true if a)Ancelotti believes in him (more than Pep, who is actually a believer in young and speed/technical players) or if b)Green improved somehow. He had lots of playing time last year (28matches, 20 starts, 10 goals - but only in the Regionalliga, the 4th league in GER), so that´s not bad and much better than rotting on Bayern´s (or Hamburg´s) bench.

When I interpret your words correct, you hope that he gets a start here or there and regular bench minutes. I seriously doubt that this will happen (maybe again with Bayern II). If there´s a knock or Müller/Lewandowski is out of form, they need another striker. Last year, they had Götze and he had (basically what you hope for Green here!) all those starts(14) in the league or bench minutes. Green isn´t on Götze´s level and I cannot see him trusted against international competition in CL bench minutes or as a sub if someone is out with injury/suspension. He seems to be (just read the reports/stats) in good form. That´s all nice. But it´s early summer and it´s not March vs. Dortmund or Paris and it isn´t even November vs. Eintracht Frankfurt. I don´t know what they´ll do, but they probably add another striker as a bench option or someone a la Müller/Götze who can play CF but is more proven than Green.
It´s really good that he had such a good start this season and especially as Bayern seems to be more present in international markets they are definitely happy about this. I wonder what happens if they decide to improve their CF rotation and Green would be sitting between Bayern I and II. He doesn´t gain anything from playing in the Regionalliga and could demand a loan to another team, but that´s not Bayern´s interest, as they should want an American on their roster.

Yes, as I said - Ancelotti could very well be looking for another striker. Still plenty of time left in the transfer window. I'd also say that Green will still probably get some minutes if Bayern brings in another forward. Two more forwards and that would be tough.

- Matt Miazga loan rumors include Eintracht Frankfurt, but it seems that it is still up in the air.

- Edgar Castillo is out for eight weeks with a patella fracture

- Luca de la Torre (Fulham) and James Murphy (Sheffield Wednesday) made first-team debuts in the League Cup and another youngster who looks close to make his debut is attacking midfielder Joel Soñora who was an unused sub for VfB Stuttgart's 2.Bundesliga opener. Another debut went to Josue Soto, a left back on loan to Cimarrones de Sonora from Querétaro.

- Longtime German lower-league veteran Matt Taylor has signed with Kickers Offenbach, who play in one of the Regionalligas. TuS Koblenz, FSV Frankfurt, Rot-Weiß Ahlen, Paderborn, Preußen Münster, Saarbrücken, Kickers Offenbach. So many super German-sounding clubs.

- LA Galaxy forward Jack McBean is rumored to be heading to Coventry City on loan. McBean was signed as a teenager, but was slow to progress and in early 2015 got bumped off the MLS roster onto a USL deal with LA Galaxy II. This year, he's kicked it up a notch and has dominated the USL (15 goals in 17 games) and earned a new MLS deal. Still, he's stuck behind a bunch of guys. League One is a notable step up from the USL, so it'll be interesting to see how he fares. He can make the move because he has a UK passport through Scottish ancestry.

An American starting for Sunderland today, but probably not the one you expected a month ago.

I didn't see the game, but heard he did reasonably well, at least for an EPL debut.

Gooch has been quietly progressing. He seems to have a great work ethic and getting this opportunity is a nice reward for a good preseason.

He hasn't gotten as much attention as other US prospects in his age bracket. Gooch was cut from the U20 WC team and I don't think many people who pay attention to such things thought that was unreasonable at the time. Part of the issue is that Ramos may not have been sure what to do with him. Although Gooch is not particularly tall (listed at 5'8", which I think is generous), he's very stocky and has a build that is more reminiscent of a rugby player than a slight winger. I'm not sure if he's ultimately a winger or a second forward. He's scored a bunch of highlight-reel goals for Sunderland U21s over the past two years.

If he's able to succeed on the wing with Sunderland, he'll be the sort of wide player who is more of an endless-motor type player than a real burner. He's not slow and he has some skill, but he's not your classic quick/tricky winger.

Someone put together a video of his performance against Man City, somewhere between an every touch video and a modest highlight package:

  • Lynden Gooch started for Sunderland again, playing the first half on the wing and the second half deeper in central midfield. He got strong reviews everywhere I looked, though it may be that he's being graded on a curve because he's a prospect. I saw the second half; he looked tidy in the midfield and showed a lot of hustle and very few turnovers. For a little guy he is strong on the ball. He was totally gassed by the 75th minute and his play fell off after that, during which time he picked up a stupid yellow for an off-the-ball foul. Overall, I thought it was another positive day for him. His versatility bodes well for his playing time.
  • Josh Gatt made Molde's matchday squad today. He has been injured for a LONG time. Gatt initially got injured in a match in June 2013. He had setbacks and didn't return to the squad until May 2015. In his first game back, he subbed on, then got hurt and was subbed off five minutes later. Now he's back again. So he's played five minutes in the last 38 months, god knows how much speed he's lost, and we don't know if he's going to Holden-ize himself and get hurt again right off the bat. However, it's nice to see him back. He turns 25 next week.
  • Julian Green got into Bayern's DFB Pokal win over Carl Zeiss Jena on Friday. It's his third-ever appearance for the club (the other two came in the 2013/14 CL and 2015/16 CL).
  • Erik Palmer-Brown is out for a couple of months with a metatarsal injury. That sucks because he had some momentum building up from a strong half-season with Porto II. Hopefully he's back in a timely fashion.
  • Jack McBean's rumored loan to Coventry City has gone through. He'll be there for the first half of the season. No idea what to expect from him.
  • US U-20 forward Brandon Vazquez made his professional debut for Tijuana in Copa MX this week. He's a big center forward type who, despite earlier involvement with Mexico, went to the U17 WC with the US. He doesn't turn 18 for couple of months and Tijuana seem to be fast-tracking him a bit.

- Center forward Bjørn Maars Johnsen signed for Hearts yesterday. He's had a weird career as something of a late bloomer. He grew up playing soccer in NC, then signed overseas instead of going to college. He played in Norway's 3rd tier, then Spain's 4th tier and 3rd tier, then Portugal's 3rd tier and then 2nd tier where he came into his own. He signed for one of Bulgaria's bigger clubs Litex Lovech, but they got booted out of the league after the players walked off the field in protest of the referee in a match against Levski Sofia. Based on how he's done in recent times, I think he has a good chance at being successful in Scotland.
Nice backheel is a good way to endear yourself to the fans in your first few minutes on the pitch

  • Yedlin update:

From Sunderland to Newcastle, eh? I don't know if it is a loan or a sale.
  • Justin Vom Steeg has signed with Fortuna Düsseldorf, leaving UCSB after one season (where his dad is the coach). He's a 19 year old GK who has been in the mix for the US U20s this cycle.
  • 18 year old forward Emmanuel Sabbi has bypassed a commitment to Akron, signing a deal with Las Palmas of La Liga today. Another guy who has been active with the U20s lately.

It's fair to say that we've never had such a steady stream of young players moving overseas before.

Yedlin to Newcastle would be disappointing. Regular playing time is good, but Yedlin showed he could hang at the PL level, so a step down isn't exactly ideal.

I agree, but on the other hand you could argue that Newcastle are more likely to be in the PL next August than either of the PL clubs rumored to have an interest in signing him (Sunderland & Hull).

I've changed my mind. Yedlin to Newcastle is great! (I just realized it means Janmaat is gone, likely to West Ham).
On a serious note, I guess if he knows he's starting it's not that bad, the competition is less, but he should be a first team fixture and he'll have a much better manager and teammates than your average Championship side.

Sure, but you are assuming that he had decent options in the PL. I don't understand why Sunderland didn't try harder to bring Yedlin back, given that he did well there last season and their RB situation is pretty dire right now. But they didn't get the job done; with a new manager priorities can change. I don't know what else was really on the table for Yedlin.

I'd like to think that Yedlin would have a 95% chance of being promoted to the PL with Newcastle, but I don't think that any club in the Championship ever is that strong a bet to go up, this early in the season. It's a long, grueling schedule in a competitive league. Fingers crossed that it all works out.

It looks increasingly likely that Newcastle is going to sell Daryl Janmaat, which clears a significant roadblock for Yedlin at RB there. Perhaps one of our resident Newcastle fans can break down the RB situation in greater detail...

One advantage of moving to a strong Championship club is that Yedlin will be able to hone his attacking skills -- a challenge for a lower-end PL club that is always on the defensive. I'm grasping at straws, I wish he had more serious PL interest, but I guess he'll just have to make the most of it.

One report says it's a permanent transfer for £5m.

Yedlin is the first Yank on NUFC since Onyewu was on loan from Standard Liege in 2007. If worldfootballnet is reliable, he's only the third ever.

RB is Yedlin's to lose. With Janmaat out, the only players who would vie for time at RB are Vurnon Anita, Jesus Gamez and Jamie Sterry. Anita is a serviceable plug and play guy who covers CM, RB, and sometimes RM depending on the match, not flashy but rarely sets a foot wrong. Sterry is 20, really green, one sub appearance last year. I actually haven't seen him play but he's starting tonight in the League Cup. Gamez came over from Atletico, and is playing LB today, which I didn't know he could play. But he's 31 and his best days are probably behind him. Yedlin played a pre-season match at LB, but there's more coverage there with Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara, all three in their prime and have decent experience there.

If Yedlin is used the way Rafa used Janmaat, he'll be attacking plenty

I'm guessing this is a big part of it. Moyes likes experienced, defense-first fullbacks. It took him years to start playing Seamus Coleman at RB instead of as a winger, even though Coleman turned out to be one of the league's best right backs, because Moyes preferred to play the more conservative Tony Hibbert.

Did he really have no shot to get meaningful playing time at Spurs? You'd think that would be the best of all worlds, with all their PL time and Poch coaching.

Hard to top (by much) learning at the feet of Rafa I guess.

And whatever happened to John Brooks potentially having interest from Pep at City? Speaking of best of all worlds.

If the goal is skills development through lots of reps, wouldn't the long(er), (more) grueling schedule be a plus, assuming he doesn't get hurt? He'll have to learn the hard way, no?

Hyndman made his Bournemouth debut in stoppage time.

De la Torre came on in extra time and helped set up Fulham's winner with a slick move at the top of the box (at about 1:50). I'd love to see him start cracking their squad for league games.

Augsburg has loaned Shawn Parker to Nürnberg. Parker's career has totally stalled out and he missed a lot of last season with an injury. He played for German youth teams, but he's never going to play for Germany's senior team. If he becomes good enough that the US invites him to play, I'd guess he'd file his switch.

Why were the stands so empty in Fulham/Boro? Looked like a college game.
It's the early rounds of the League Cup, which is a tertiary competition for these clubs, played midweek. It's always going to be one of the lowest-profile games in Fulham's season.

Julian Green is on the bench for Bayern in the Bundesliga opener. Aron Johannsson is starting for Werder(!) which is sooner than I expected. Well, Max Kruse is out for a little bit, which opens the situation up a bit. Werder is getting killed within 15 mins, though; Xabi Alonso opened with a ridiculous goal. At this rate, he's just going to jog around the center circle for 90 minutes waiting for a pass that never comes.

Grant Wahl on Christian Pulisic:

A source close to U.S. 17-year-old Christian Pulisic says there’s a 50-50 chance that Pulisic will be loaned or sold from Borussia Dortmund before next week’s transfer deadline.

Pulisic was disappointed that Dortmund replaced one outgoing attacker with four new ones this summer (Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Ousmane Dembele, Emre Mor), and he’s worried about taking a step backward this season. Pulisic was offered a new contract by Dortmund earlier this year but turned it down and would not accept a new offer right now, either. A Stoke City source denied a report that it had offered €20 million for Pulisic, but I am told that newly promoted Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig is prepared to offer €15 million for him.
I'd tread carefully if I were Pulisic. He's still 17 and needs to avoid any rash, impulsive moves. I wouldn't rule out a move, but he better be damn sure he's moving into the right environment where he can develop to his full potential.

As expected:

Central midfielder Weston McKennie turned 18 two days ago and his connections to Schalke weren't exactly a secret. Tough loss for FC Dallas, where he had been for a long time. At Schalke, he'll join Haji Wright on the U-19 team. McKennie's stock has increased markedly in the last year.

Right back Shaq Moore has landed at Levante's reserve team. He has had a tumultuous time in Spain; his club collapsed halfway through the season last year and then he played for Real Oviedo's reserves on a short-term contract. His technical ability with the U20s was cringe-worthy, so I don't have high hopes for him.

Old-school German-American David Wagner has managed Huddersfield Town to the top of the Championship very early in the season.

Wahl: Pulisic not leaving Dortmund via loan or transfer

Wahl: Miazga loan to Espanyol?

Mael Corboz has transferred to MSV Duisburg, currently in the 3. Liga. Corboz finished his career at Maryland last fall, signed a HG deal with NYRB, was cut during preseason, then signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL. AFAIK he is sort of a #8/#10 tweener.

Dominique-Royal Fennell has transferred from Würzburger Kickers to Hallescher FC. He helped Würzburg to promotion to the 2.Bundesliga last year, but I guess he has been pushed out of the team and is back in the 3. Liga.

Chesterfield winger Gboly Ariyibi has turned in a transfer request after being the subject of reported bids by Championship clubs Barnsley and Brentford. It's not clear whether anyone will meet Chesterfield's asking price, though.

Former DCU product Collin Jouan has bypassed a commitment to Penn State to join Audax Italiano in Chile.
