Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

Caller: Well I think part of the reason they traded Espinoza was they really like their new draft pick, Jason Groome. And the other young, big time pitching prospect has looked really good since he came back from injury (Felger ends call).

Mazz: He's talking about Brian Johnson. He's trying to get over anxiety issues and I don't think there's a chance he helps you in the near future.

I mean the guy only hosts a show called the Baseball Reporters. What do you expect him to know about the Red Sox?

Was listening for a few mins this afternoon and the impression I got was that they think Pomeranz is on the juice

Mazz is clown show. He lack of knowledge in so many aspects of sports and his being adamant that his position is always correct is impossible to listen to.

Listening to Baseball Reporters for a bit. Says he's disappointed they used Espinoza on Pomeranz because they could've gotten somebody better for him. He can't accept that young stud pitchers like Fernandez and Sale aren't traded anymore.

You guys missed the best part of his Pomeranz take: The Padres must have traded him because they know he's not really that good because they obviously plan on being competitive in the next two years.

I think I literally laughed out loud.

Can they DFA Murray and bring in Keefe? Murray is in Clay territory.

Keefe at least knows NBA and has a sense of humor.

Tony on the Baseball Reporters. "His BABIP... I don't know what that measures. It takes out strikeouts and foul balls right? Well it is bound to change"

Espinoza is the new Teixeira for Mazz. Every stance he takes on the deal is designed to make him look right about it being a bad deal. Pomeranz needs to be great and Espinoza has to flame out for Tony to be wrong, which everyone will forget about long before he has to admit it IF Pomeranz doesn't suck this year, in which case he'll be perfectly right. Ugh, he's insufferable.

Today's show I expect to be extremely logical, with F&M being fair to Pomeranz and both of them mentioning how we cannot judge the deal based on one bad inning. I expect nothing short of this.

I don't think they understand what it means to be logical anymore. If a guy is having a great season, it's better living through, ahem, chemistry. If he's having a bad season, he just sucks and needs to be sent to the glue factory. The only way to avoid their ire is to have an average season and even then they'll complain if it's a decrease in production. Controversy creates cash, I suppose, but it's really old already. It's a shame that this is what Boston/New England sports radio has become.

No, if they're having a down season it's because they STOPPED eating the "avocado ice cream".....

I caught ten minutes of the show today. Felger is on vacation so I didn't stick around long. In just those ten minutes Mazz said:

1. "Andrew Benintendi is only 21". He turned 22 last month. In fairness, he corrected himself a little bit later.

2. "Benintendi will only be playing against righties for now. I'm guessing doesn't hit well against lefties. I probably should have looked that up before the show I guess."

3. Benintendi might have been promoted too quickly and compared this situation to JBJ who Mazz felt came up too soon back in 2013. (Paraphrasing) "There are some differences between the two players, Bradley made the team out of camp and was drafted out of high school unlike Benintendi." The producer had to let him know that Jackie went to South Carolina. JBJ only won the MOP Award while leading his team to the National Championship. How the fuck does this guy not know this stuff?

Because it wasn't in the previous game's boxscore?

Mazz is typically not prepared and insufferable to listen to. Shocking that the MLB Network has him on MLB Now or High Heat from time to time. He is terrible.

Well when he is there he sits in for Mad Dog so it isn't like he has huge shoes to fill.

The only Boston people I ever seem to see on MLB Network are Mazz and Cafardo. It's one of the few truly baffling things about the network (along with employing Harold Reynolds and Chris Russo), since they're typically very good at what they do. Of course, for all I know, their whole roledex of beat correspondents might be each team's equivalent of those two and I'm just not aware of it.

Just download the podcast.

The gist: great first year, sucky 6 1/2 after that. OPS same as JD Drew, who Mazz loathed. If you threw out first year, OPS below .800 for rest of contract. Played an average of ~120 games/year, fewer than Drew. < .200 average in 36 playoff games.

Mazz: "But he helped them win a WS."

Jack: "Oh, don't start with that crap... JD Drew helped the Red Sox win a World Series but you would never give him any credit!"

Mazz: *stammer stammer* not the point... Red Sox really wanted him... Thought he was a change-the-balance-of-power in the AL East kind of player.

Jack: "Well, he was NEVER that."

Felger actually had to rescue Mazz by saying that what Texeira really represented was the "too many voices" era for the Red Sox, because he was a done deal until the last meeting where Lucchino screwed things up.

It is only an in-law! Should only be 1 day! If it was May, take 3 days, no problem!

Then when Murray informs the host of the baseball reporters that being place bereavement list means you have to miss a minimum of 3 games, the host of the baseball stumbles around for a few seconds before deciding that they should play a man short.

Mazz is a dope and a fraud.

I'm sure if the Red Sox played a man short in lieu of placing Hanley on bereavement leave and it ended up costing them in, say, a one run game against Cleveland today that Mazz would have defended them and not spent four hours ripping them and turning it into a referendum on the entire organization and how dumb they are.

Well, I'm pretty sure if a member of his wife's family died he wouldn't take that much time off to go to the funeral with and comfort her. Because only a decent human being would.

The troll was strong in him today. A caller asked when Mazz was gonna forgive Mookie for "getting picked off on a balk." Mazz simply said how much that still bothers him. At this point, Felger chimes in saying Mookie has a shot at MVP. Tony's reply..."so what"
I actually had to respect the level of commitment to his schtick
