Interesting, now people are reporting that NY had tried themselves to sign Chapman to an extension before dealing him, so maybe they really will be back on him this winter.

NY now has 5 consensus top 50 hitting prospects in Judge, Sanchez, Torres, Mateo and Blake Rutherford (just drafted but already in Law's top 50), as well as Bird. They have some other guys too, Miguel Andujar maybe most notably (a 21 year old Dominican 3B holding his own in AA), plus Tyler Austin (24 year old 1B and former top 100 prospect who would be leading the IL in OPS if he had enough PAs).

YES YES YES We get Adam Warren back. I love it. Oh, and we got a top prospect, but WE GOT ADAM WARREN BACK.

He should be DAP's pitchman, the guy is spackle, he fills in the cracks.

And i guess we basically got Castro for free now.

Another interesting part of this whole exchange is that NY also got to try to sell Chapman on signing with NY next year by having him be part of the team for 2/3 of a season. I'm not sure how much I would like NY signing Chapman to a massive deal, but worth watching:

Jack Curry ‏@JackCurryYES 2m2 minutes ago
Even after dealing Chapman, Yanks will be interested in signing him as FA. When Chapman was asked if he'd be receptive, he said, "Oh, yeah."
I love when people report this kind of thing as if it means anything. Why would any player who's about to become a free agent want to include the richest team in the bidding? I'm stumped.

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

This is the second time Cashman has taken Theo to the cleaners. Is he trying to stick it to his old club?

Yeah, Not too many times do you hear "No, I'm never playing for my former team again, no chance I'll sign with them" Once, maybe twice in 30+ years

Also both of those deals have been totally fine from Theo's perspective. In the first one, he got rid of Castro's 4 year/$42M commitment to a player the Cubs no longer had any use for, even if he didn't get anything in return, and Castro has been adequate but certainly not anything too special.

This one, he may have just acquired the piece to put them over the top in the playoffs and break their century-plus losing streak, in exchange for some prospects who were mostly blocked and a guy in Warren who has mostly been a bust for them so far (and got sent to AAA again this weekend).

That's not what I meant to imply, I meant that Chapman now actually knows what it's like to be part of the Yankee organization, he knows players on the team much better than he did before, and so if NY was to go after him hard, all else being equal, that degree of familiarity (assuming he did genuinely enjoy his time in NY, as he seems to have) can only help.

Probably will be.

I assume the negotiations were largely rooted in making it clear to Chapman they were interested in bringing him back, and setting a price for him, so he doesn't resign for less than that in Chicago

Whoever was responsible for trading Chapman to the Yankees for a group of non-prospects should be fired. The Reds are such a terrible organization.

Cashman got Chapman for free (basically) and then, in turn, traded him for two excellent prospects and a 7th inning reliever.

How often does a traded player return to his team via free agency? It doesn't happen very often. Sure, the Yankees will have the money to make it happen, but if the Cubs don't win a W.S. this year, they will probably go all out to resign Chapman and they can easily match the Yankees money in a bidding war.

Or it was one last attempt from the business faction within the Yankees organization at avoiding a trade.

edit: responding to BigMike's post.

This seems pretty likely, they supposedly made the overtures to try to lock him up long-term in early June.

I was referring to Curry, not you. I get your point. I thought Curry's "report" was pretty meaningless.

Yes, he is actively trying to make the Yankees better to spite the Red Sox at the detriment of his current employer. Good catch.
At the end of the day, he gave away Castro, a solid young middle infielder with massive upside for nothing at all. Nada. Zilch. How can such a move be classified as anything but a detriment to the team? I realize he had nowhere to play, but he surely could have gotten *something* for Castro by shopping him around. Even a bag of used baseballs would be better than the deal he made.

Now Theo emptied the farm for two months of Chapman. I could possibly see such a move if they locked him up for a few years, but trading your farm system for a rental doesnt make a lick of sense. Add in the fact that Chapman is such a scumbag, I have gone from hoping they finally win the big one to rooting for the Cubs to go down in flames in the playoffs Bartman-style.

Even for GFIN mode, these deals were poor baseball decisions.

The MFY are the big winners here. They likely get The Shooter back in October and have restocked their farm.

Yep. I am amazed by this. What was the downside of holding on to him and waiting until midseason to trade him? As if the MFY were the only ones that knew he was just going to get a slap on the wrist. I dont buy it.

Orangutans throwing darts at a board can do a better job than some of the GMs out there. I guess they have a very apathetic fan base.

The only thing massive about Castro is his out making propensity. Seriously you are making yourself look really silly.
He has reached .300 several times in his career and has shown some good power. "Massive" was probably not accurate, but he does have some upside (he is only 26).

A career .280 hitter with good power for a middle infielder and decent defense. And he is young. Is anyone arguing that is worth nothing? Because that is what Theo ultimately got for him.

No, they got rid of his contract, which is what they wanted to do. That's not Nada or Zilch.

Got it. Thanks.

It feels like a fail to me because that haul lacks a young player the Yankees can plug into that lineup right away. But if Cashman can use Torres in another deal for a Jose Fernandez then it will have been worth it. Sorry, I just don't care much for highly touted 19 year A+ prospects. Those guys are everywhere.
Try selling that thought process to Soxprospects when you get a chance and see what response you get. That site is still burning about a highly touted 18y old low A prospect.

Give credit where credit is due...great job by Cashman

No offense to the people over there (several of whom are probably here as well), but who cares? It's the Internet; there's plenty of room for different ways of looking at things.

I am hoping Cashman keeps the ball moving. Hal just has to listen to his baseball people, and he has to see what Cashman can get for Miller too. If he could nab a couple of other top #100 prospects would be just so smart.
The Yankees people on the radio here in NYC are bending over backwards insisting the Chapman trade doesnt mean they are "sellers". Trading Miller would clearly be a white flag move.

Ill take bets now on Adam Warren turning back into a stud reliever for MFY.

I am sure this information is out there in abundance, but I am curious to see a retrospective analysis. How did the consensus (is there such a thing?) top 25 prospects listed in 2005 pan out? How many ended up as all stars/starters/marginal starters versus busts? For example, I save all my old NFL draft mags and it is very interesting to go back 10-15 years to see how accurate they were.

Lastings Milledge! Let's not discuss that list in this thread, though, and try to keep it more on topic. Thanks.

Edit: Ha, Felix Pie reminds me of when my Orioles' fan friend wanted to trade Adam Jones and keep Pie. Um, no.

Is there a compilation of top rated prospects for the last say 20 years and a breakdown of how they ended up faring the majors. I am thinking of something like a scale where 5 = All Start/potential HoF and 1=bust. I vaguely remember seeing something like this not too long ago, but it might have been for the NFL.
I'm sure there is. If only there existed some electronic way of searching through data to find out.

But as JA requested, let's get back on track.

So now the next most obvious candidate to move is Beltran, but not sure how many contenders he's a good fit on. Texas with Fielder done for the season seems like the best bet, maybe Cleveland? Any other ideas?

Houston has Bregman up today and Guerriel coming in a few weeks, do they really need another hitter?

He makes a bunch of sense in LF (or RF moving Chisenhall to LF), but given that they have Napoli and Santana one of those three would have to sit when Beltran inevitably needs to DH.
A little funny that both Napoli and Santana started as catchers and CLE badly needs a catcher, but neither of them can play there even part-time anymore (Napoli hasn't caught since 2012, Santana since 2014).

Yes debilitating injuries and degenerative conditions are a laugh riot.

Seriously tho, maybe they should trade for Joe Mauer.

"Aroldis Chapman is gone. Could Ivan Nova be next?

According to a major-league source, dealing Nova has become the Yankees' next priority as they look to bring something back for another player set to hit free agency at the end of the season.

"They're focused on him," the source said. "They're looking at the guys with expiring contracts first - though not Beltran right now."

The Marlins, desperate for starting pitching, have expressed interest in Nova, who is 7-5 with a 4.65 ERA in 20 games (14 starts) this season. Nova went through a bad seven-start stretch from late-May through late-June, but he's 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in his past four starts, surging at the right time given next Monday's non-waiver trade deadline."

Houston looks like utter dogshit. I can easily see the Yankees sweeping. They just beat Keuchel. They also just beat the tar out of the Giants (allegedly the best team in baseball) and nearly swept the Indians a few weeks ago.

How can they justify being sellers after all this and only 3 games back in the wild card? It just isnt going to happen unless they totally shit the bed this week. Bet the farm they have a 6-1 roadtrip since the hapless Rays are on tap for this weekend.

On the contrary, I think Hal and Randy make The Cashman get another piece to be more competitive in the next two months. That is a much more realistic scenario than getting rid of Beltran.

Jesus Christ, if you don't start making better posts, I'm kicking your ass off here. Houston is the hottest team in baseball, 37-16 in their last 53, and tonight's game isn't even over yet. Make better posts or go away.

I made a mistake and thought it said 9th inning. You dont have to jump down my throat about it.

Honestly look at the schedule for the remainder of the games until the trade deadline. Then tell me that is isnt completely realistic that the Yankees will have a very nice road trip here putting them back into wild card contention. Is that such a crazy scenario?

It is hard to justify selling at that point to the fanbase. Thats what I am saying.

Are you a NY fan or a Boston fan? If you follow any Yankee discussion site, virtually everyone wants them to sell as much as they can. It's not even clear that some of these moves would make them worse, they have a lot of talent ready to step in.

But that aside, it's clearly the best move for 2017 and 2018 and 2019 to sell. As of right now (before today's games), Fangraphs has them at 7.5% to make the playoffs, 4.2% to make it past the division round. Is that really worth hurting your chances in future years to try to beat those odds?

Dedicated die hard yankee baseball Internet message boards are not necessarily representative of the average ticket-buying fan. Go to facebook and you will see most Yankee fans want to stay competitive. I live in the heart of the evil empire and most coworkers want them to stay in it. The radio talk shows are filled with fans who want the Yankees to keep Beltran and the other pieces to try to make the playoffs.

Bear in mind, I am not saying I necessarily agree with that strategy. I am only saying it might be very difficult for the team to have a fire sale given the nature of their fanbase. Your average Joe Yankee fan isnt looking up Fangraphs and fretting over playoff odds.
