Soler seems to fit Cashman's acquisition template of the last couple of years perfectly, a very highly touted prospect who is still 24 or 25 but whose initial team has soured on him some.

Curious what the "+" is, presumably not Soler. Warren makes sense, also that clears a 40 man spot for Chapman.

So if this goes through, NY would have 5 guys on Keith Law's midseason top 50 from a few weeks ago, plus Bird, Severino and Kaprielian.

Joel Sherman is fresh off vacation and working his ass off already:

"There would be other players from the Cubs side. Switch-hitting third baseman Jeimer Candelario, who has appeared in five games for the Cubs this season, could be included. The 22-year-old, who was born in New York and moved to the Dominican Republic when he was 5, is hitting .247 with seven homers in 91 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Former Yankees right-hander Adam Warren could also be in the deal."

If they get Warren back, that makes it a little easier to move Miller also. Bryan Mitchell should be back at some point also, although I haven't heard any updates on him in a long time.

Who would be their pen lefty? Wilson?

Shreve, you mean? Bleier is on the team also, but not a lot of immediate options. Jacob Lindgren is still floating around somewhere, not sure what his deal is (minor league DL since April, no news stories that I see), and they have quite a few lefty SPs doing well in the minors, so maybe they'd try to convert one or two of them.

Oh, right, they have Coke and Pazos and Webb all in AAA, plus Dietrich Enns, who is a starter and has a 1.79 ERA this year in AA and AAA combined, so no shortage of possibilities.

Okay, I know I'm being dense, but if the pieces to this deal are agreed upon, what needs to be worked out?

It's midnight on a Sunday and both teams are travelling today/tonight, maybe they are just waiting until tomorrow to announce it.

Or it could be details like the rest of Chapman's salary (not sure why either team would care much but who knows), the fifth guy in the deal (maybe Theo wants Cashman to throw in a low level lottery pick if he is sending back Candelario and Warren also), who knows. I am pretty glued to Twitter but don't really expect anything definitive until the AM.

“@sahadevsharma: Candelario rumors are false, he is not a part of the Chapman deal.”

Thinking about this a little more, it seems as if Cashman locked into just the Cubs' offer earlier today, and I doubt he would have done that if he thought Chapman having to sign an extension would be an essential part of the deal (mostly because, as we said, why would he?). So I doubt it is, which also seems to be the general consensus among the writers tweeting about this.

Source: #Yankees-#Cubs trade, if completed, is not simply a 2-for-1 - Torres and another prospect for Chapman. “Much more than that.”

Asked if Adam Warren would head back to #Yankees, source said, “Maybe.”

deep inside Guido territory
Link? I haven't seen any 'name' or national writers report that.
Julie DiCaro has reported it. She has a blue check mark so I consider her a credible source but as we all know these negotiations are fluid. Although she does jump to a conclusion that money means an extension.

Hearing money is the hold up with Chapman, so I guess that means an extension.

She is also the only one who mentioned Soler, who doesn't seem to have ever actually been involved.

Also if he gets Warren back, that means he essentially got Castro for nothing, just for picking up his remaining contract.

I deleted a bunch of posts connected to a fake Twitter account that Will Carroll stupidly retweeted so I thought it was real. Deal's not done yet...

It's looking more and more likely she is not credible so I won't mention anything from her again. The majority seem to think it's Torres, Warren, and a couple more pieces coming to NY for Chapman. Heck of a ROI for Cashman.
Great job by Cashman if the deal gets done. Theo is in it to win it.

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports that outfield prospect Billy McKinney is also involved in the Aroldis Chapman trade.

Seems like a fantastic move for the Yankees and shows some awareness I think that's been missing in the past.

Some fancy town in CT
Dick Williams (the Reds GM) should be fired on the spot for gross incompetence. He had no reason to rush to make the trade in the first place. He could have waited out any suspension and then made a deal. In fact if it was an 80 game suspension, he had 30 games to showcase Chapman and then make a deal with another year of control attached to Chapman. Just a mind numbingly, Dave Stewart level of GM stupidity.

Wow. No extension and they got a package comparable to what the Sox gave for Kimbrel. Seems like a good year to be sellers, although at some point the supply of teams willing to pay these prices has to run out.

Makes the Zeigler deal look like solid gold.

Another interesting part of this whole exchange is that NY also got to try to sell Chapman on signing with NY next year by having him be part of the team for 2/3 of a season. I'm not sure how much I would like NY signing Chapman to a massive deal, but worth watching:

Jack Curry ‏@JackCurryYES 2m2 minutes ago
Even after dealing Chapman, Yanks will be interested in signing him as FA. When Chapman was asked if he'd be receptive, he said, "Oh, yeah."

They give up 2 months of Chapman for 2 of the Cubs' top 5 prospects and a major league arm. Great trade for the Yankees considering they gave the Reds 2 non-prospects for him.
Where do those prospects rank outside of the Cubs farm system?

Torres is around #25 on the MLB.com and Baseball America lists, McKinney is #75 on the MLB.com list and not in the top 100 of the Baseball America one.

The MLB.com lists usually seem to lag reality a bit, so McKinney may not really be a top 100 guy currently. Also, we still don't know the 4th player here, assuming there is one.

Got it. Thanks.

It feels like a fail to me because that haul lacks a young player the Yankees can plug into that lineup right away. But if Cashman can use Torres in another deal for a Jose Fernandez then it will have been worth it. Sorry, I just don't care much for highly touted 19 year A+ prospects. Those guys are everywhere.

They have some guys to plug into the lineup right now, the problem is the guys blocking them. Sanchez and Judge are both certainly ready, Bird will be back sometime next year. I agree a bit with what you're saying about lower minor prospects, but this is a guy who MLB.com has just a few spots behind Benintendi.

Gleyber Torres | Rank: 24 (Preseason: 28)
Team: Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A Adv)ETA: 2018Position: SSAge: 19 DOB: 12/13/1996Bats: R Throws: RHeight: 6' 1" Weight: 175 lb.
Signed: July 2, 2013 - CHC
VIDEOOther Lists: Top 30 Chicago Cubs Prospects (#1), Top 10 SS Prospects (#8)
Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 55

Addison Russell was barely 21 when he cracked the Cubs' lineup last April, and the club has another talented middle infielder on an even faster track to the big leagues. In his first taste of full-season ball in 2015, Torres ranked as the low Class A Midwest League's top prospect and helped Myrtle Beach win the high Class A Carolina League championship -- at age 18.

Part of Chicago's $8.2 million international signing spree in 2013, Torres signed for $1.7 million out of Venezuela on the strength of his advanced bat and potential for solid tools across the board. He has a quick right-handed swing and a mature approach, recognizing pitches well and using the entire field. Once Torres gets stronger and learns to pull pitches more often, he could produce 15 or more homers per season.

Torres seemed a half-step quicker in 2015, enhancing his chances of staying at shortstop -- though Russell will have something to say about that. While Torres' range may be just average, his instincts and strong arm allow him to make plays. If he has to change positions, he'd profile well offensively and defensively at either second or third base.

From Keith Law's midseason list, released on July 14:

26. Gleyber Torres, SS
Chicago Cubs
Previous rank: 15
Current level: High-A

Torres has put on some weight, and his body isn't as agile as it was a year ago, but he's hitting .270/.348/.423 as one of only three teenage regulars in the Carolina League, and doing so even though his home park is death on power. (Eight of his nine homers have come on the road.) Torres might not be a lock to stay at short any more, unless he gets his conditioning back under control, but he continues to show a decent eye at the plate and enough ability to make hard contact that he'll profile well at another position. I'd still like to see more consistency in his game at the plate, but that might be a little unfair to a guy who's the same age as most college freshmen.

Sounds like the last piece of the deal is Rashad Crawford who is a speed first, somewhat toolsy CF in High A ball
