Not for me, for a friend (really)

I have a friend who likes to use Hangouts as his SMS/MMS app, like all messaging. You would think this would be Fucking easy as hell since it is what Google wants people to do.

Unfortunately, when they integrated voice about 6 months ago, they assigned him a Voice number and now his reply texts all have this stupid number instead of his actual number. It fucks up literally every multiple person text thread because there ends up being a separate one with him in it with the GVoice number. It does this with any MMS or conversation with iOS people included.

We have been unsuccessful at figuring out how to make hangouts just use his actual number.

In a more abstract question - why does google keep fucking with things that actually work?

Go into hangouts, go to settings, then select "SMS" under general settings. Click "Default SMS Messaging Account" and set it to "SMS" (as opposed to a google account). I'm pretty sure that should do it.

Note that they have (on Android at least) split out SMS/MMS from Hangouts threads recently. It's unclear how the integration will work (or not) going forward.
