One of the worst things about the war on drugs and all the anti drug programs, anti gambling programs etc, is treated it all like just bad choices. Most people don't get hooked on drugs, or gamble away the mortgage but some do. Those people are different mentally than the others. They may do that to themselves, but there is also evidence people are born with predispositions. Blaming addicts and throwing them in jail, or just telling them to smarten up, etc has never worked and it just allows other to not care and do anything for that person. Cancer is a disease and choices can increase your risk. But some people get it when others don't.

I never like Manziel the player, or the "johnny Football" persona. He has almost always come across as an arrogant clown, and that certainly plays a roll in his downfall. But, I take no pleasure in watching his self destruction.

This guy says it better than me.

Manziel won't get sober unless he overdoses ends up in the hospital and gets legitimately scared. If he does ever get sober he's going to come back to reality and realize the damage he's done. That for me was the scariest part. Yes while under the influence you know the consequences but you push them aside and think day to day. He will have lost a NFL career a family his money will run out and it will hit him all at once. I don't see how this ends well at all. Wrong people around him/has money/dad ostricizing him by going to the press.

Just a minor quibble. The degree of predisposition to start using a given drug/gamble has not been shown to be heritable. What has been shown to be heritable (30-80 percent depending on the drug and study) is the degree of habitual use.
Nevertheless, evidence of heritability doesn't automatically make something a disease. Height is heritable, I'm fairly certain it's not a disease.
