So we'd rather 5X6 for Backes instead of 6X6 for Loui? WTF?

I like the guy but he's 32. Probably here as a "name" to sell tickets

Guessing Sweeney didn't read the USA today article lol

That's a tough one for the back end of the deal.

It does allow the Bs to deal Krejci in a package for a top 4 D.

I have no idea how you can value Backes over Loui at the same contract terms.

I do like Backes as a player. I like Loui a lot more. This isn't good.

At least 1 year more than I'm comfortable. Should have kept Loui. Maybe they want the presence? Eesh.

Fixated on "getting bigger down the middle". No one in their right mind would basically trade 32 yo Backes for Eriksson, but that's basically what they did.

Wondering if he's here to be paired at RW with DK or if he's now the 3rd line center?

Holy shit 5 years according to Fluto

It's gonna suck in 2020

Right.

The issue isn't signing Backes to 5 years (2-3 years would have been ideal), that alone without the Loui situation is not terrible, but also not good. However, throw the Loui situation into the mix and this deal is atrocious. What are they fucking doing?

Backes can play C or RW so they've got some options. He can either play RW with Bergeron, or 3C if they trade Spooner/move Spooner to the wing.

If the Bruins plan is to save a few bucks at C by playing Backes and moving Krejci for a top D, I can be behind the move. I'm sad to see Loui go as in a vacuum he's absolutely the better player, but Backes for 5 years or Loui for 6 takes either one through their age 37 season (Backes just turned 32 a month ago, Loui turns 31 this month).

Wouldn't you want Krejci at 5x7.25 over Backes at 5x6 though?
Sure. But that's not the question. The question is whether we would want Krejci, or Backes plus defenseman they get for trading Krejci.

There was a tweet from Dom Tiano that said the expectation is Bergeron/Backes/Krejci up the middle, so that likely means a lesser deal with Spooner.

Backes said on TSN that he is coming to Boston to play center. So Spooner has to either be gone or headed to the wing.

I had an expectation that Loui was going to sign for an absurd AAV and term (something like 7/49), and so had already come to peace with the fact that he was gone.

But 6/36 seems very reasonable. I realize that the team was small last year, and the bigger players on the roster were essentially useless clutter. So I can see bringing in a guy like Backes. But not at the expense of Erickson on essentially the same contract terms.

Bingo.

They essentially have the same team they ended the season with, except they've downgraded from Loui to Backes. Solid day so far.

UGH, as a RW I think the contract is a year or two to long, and at least a half million to expensive.

As a C, well I think I wouldn't have gone beyond 1 year as a C

Just heard Backes said he's being brought in to be a Center. Krejci or more likely Spooner has to be on the move.

I like Backes's game. I think there's a chance that this contract ends up being only a year or two too long. Does anybody besides me feel uneasy going six years for Loui Eriksson's concussion-tenderized noggin? I've been wincing with just about every hit. Does Backes play PK/PP 1 or 2?
