Rose peaked higher and earlier. I mean, in April 2007 he was playing in the McDonalds high school all star game. In June 2011, only 4 years later, he was hoisting the NBA MVP trophy. Bulls fans were ready for him to walk across Lake Michigan within a couple years.

Rose could become a high quality off-the-ball secondary scorer. He doesn't have his old, all-universe athleticism, but he can still be an effective NBA scorer. Rose needs to want to evolve his game and get the good coaching to do it. Neither of things were going to happen in Chicago any time soon.
It's a small point, but I think there's a strong argument that Nomar's peak at ages 23-25 (OPS+ of 140,153,156 @ SS) was at least the baseball equivalent to Rose's peak at 21-22.

Thad's a nice enough player but he can't shoot and isn't a great defender or rebounder. I won't shed any tears over missing out, especially considering how happy I am in general that as of this moment Brooklyn's roster is:

PG: ?????/Sloan/Kilpatrick/Jack
SG: RHJ/??????
SF: ?????/Bogdanovich
PF: ?????/McCollough
C: Lopez/?????

Well, plus whoever they take with their #3 draft pick, right?

Oh, well. At least they have next year's #1. Oh, wait...

And the year after....

(Thank you, Danny Ainge)

And one more interesting rumor for today....

Jake Fischer ✔ @JakeLFischer
In preliminary trade talks, Houston pitched the Sixers a package involving Trevor Ariza and Patrick Beverley for Nerlens Noel, per source.
1:37 PM - 23 Jun 2016

This has to be one of the most interesting basketball days in a long time. And the draft hasn't even started. :)

talk of Ricky Rubio for Nerlens Noel circulating. not sure what else in the trade
It's Philly posturing to Boston that they have other options, and it's Boston posturing to Philly that they are perfectly happy taking Dunn themselves.

True. But how long do you think it would take for that team to make it to .500?

For a whole season or does like 1-0 count?

Honestly that's still a really bad team unless one of Embiid or Simmons has a huge breakout. It will be pretty bad defensively with no shooters, they'll probably get run fairly often.

Woj on Charlotte - Lin could get $13mm, Williams $15mm, Batum $20mm (all per year $) in FA
I sat next to the wife of Batum's agent at the NBA Draft. She was in good spirits...

Going to take a while to re-program ourselves on these salaries. Next year Lin could be making more than Steph Curry and twice as much as IT.

Batum will get the max. It'll be something like $22. The others all look about right to me.
Yeah Batum is a certain max. He wants to be there, will have other max out there, and Charlotte wants him back. No brainer.

The contract comparisons these next couple of years will be comical. Crowder and Isaiah's timing couldn't have possibly been worse.

Chris Mannix ‏@ChrisMannixYS 1m1 minute ago
Not only is Richard Jefferson not retiring, he's looking to play 2-3 more years, sources told @TheVertical. RJ coming off strong year in CLE
Mannix was on the Dan Patrick Show last week and said he expects guys like Jefferson to get really big 1 year deals, like in the $12M per range. Said this was due to the cap jumping, as well as teams who don't want to lock up years of cap space while they wait for next year's big free agent crop. There's going to be some big money for these types of players.

deep inside Guido territory
Woj on The Vertical podcast w/r/t Durant: OKC is the strong front runner right now, but things could change once the meetings start. Could be some additions to the group of teams meeting with KD but not probable. Meetings will take place over 2 days presumably July 1st and 2nd. Head could get turned once in the room examples given of Golden State, San Antonio. Gave an example of Aldridge changing his mind to Spurs. Keeps saying teams feel they are laying the groundwork for 2017 free agency but says Sam Presti shouldn't be sleeping well. I'm not going to report that he's going back to OKC because things change very quickly. Says that getting Victor Oladipo was big for KD because KD is fond of him as he's a DC guy. Says that OKC isn't necessarily better after that trade. Reminds him of the Harden trade.

I think we'd assumed the Sixers were gonna spend a lot of cap space. It's a shame if anything that they're wasting it on someone like Barnes.

Someone better than Barnes wouldn't go there.

Yeah, he'll go there, get paid, play 6-8 more minutes a night, jack up more shots, average 16 and 6 and call it a win.

Barnes will be skewered by the Philadelphia press corps and fans. There really could not be a worse fit from a personality perspective. Branes, for all his failings, seems like a genuinely good guy. He also seems to be a bit sensitive. No es bueno in Philly.

As a side note, poor London if this is true. His summer really will go to shite.

I'm definitely not a Barnes guy but Philly has to spend money somewhere. Not sure what else is out there for them.

Yeah count me in on this being a huge get for Philly and I'm certainly not a Barnes guy. For all his warts, Barnes is a legitimate starting forward in this league who can defend multiple positions. I hadn't expected Philly to attract a legitimate starter in FA.

Barnes defends multiple positions like Jeff Green does (i.e., not that well at any of them). He's got good shooting numbers, but has been playing in more or less the best situation possible. He's better than Green, but he's probably a below average starter in the league.

Dwyane Wade's initial contract discussions with the Miami Heat have not produced a common ground between the parties, which has the All-Star guard preparing to field outside offers when free agency opens on Friday, according to league sources.
Thoughts on possible landing spots? Besides the Knicks, of course.

Miami. They're dicking him around to save money, but after they strike out on Durant they'll make him a better offer.

Tough to say if he really left.
2 types of teams:
1. Ring chasing- Spurs, Warriors, Cavs
2. Money and a place his wife would like: Knicks, Nets, Lakers

D-Wade had a great season: played 74 games and had an awesome playoffs to boot. He should definitely be demanding top dollar and if he doesn't get it from Miami, there'll be a fair few clubs ready to provide.

I was so disappointed with Harrison Barnes this year after he was so integral in their title run, but Philly is not going to be the only team to offer him the max, so let's see how that plays out.

As someone who has watched (and probably rooted for) more Harrison Barnes basketball over the past three years than anyone here not in the Bay Area, I agree with this read. Barnes made a leap last season for three reasons. First, he naturally improved as he had more experience in the league.

Furthermore, the core of the Warriors jelled and he fed off of being the third or fourth option on any play when defenders sagged off him to help cover Curry, Thompson, Green and Iguodala (in the small line-up), either opening up shots for him in the corner or giving him space to get to the rim. The presence of the small line-up also forced other teams to go small and he was able to defend third/fourth option wings while Green, Iguodala and Thompson took the better players.

Lastly, Barnes usage changed significantly under Kerr to the above from running a lot of ISOs under Mark Jackson. I don't dislike Jackson the coach as much as some Warrior fans but his penchant for calling Harrison Barnes ISOs near the basket was enough to induce Smiling Joe Hesketh-like rage from even the most patient fans.

In short, Barnes is a decent player who had good numbers the past two years playing in an ideal system. If he is asked to create his own shot consistently or find points by finishing at the rim (he is not good at that) he is going to disappoint people. I cannot imagine a worse place to be a bust high priced free agent for Barnes than Philadelphia.

He had one of the worst seasons of his career (FWIW, his RPM was -1.08 and his WS/48 was 1.05, just about league average) and though he did play 74, he's still averaged only 62 games played in his last 5 seasons. Plus he'll be 35 in January, with about two additional seasons' worth of playoff games on his legs. But he'll get paid based on name recognition, the cap, and the hope that he can work some of his playoff magic again. It's a testament to his his overall skill that he's a 34 year old shooting guard who can't shoot and will still garner substantial interest, but his next contract is not going to look good for very long.

Wade is a perfect fit for the Knicks as noted above as they continue to push for the 2010 title.

This is a good list of predicted free agency contracts.
That's handy. I was just going to ask what people thought Mahinmi would cost- if 3 years at 11/yr is close, I hope the Celtics kick the tires on him, as long as they're looking at offensively challenged centers who shouldn't see the court at crunch time.
