Its amazing how easily Iceland is taking the ball away when England is on the "attack."

Hart makes a save! He's better when he doesn't have to move.

And technically, God Save the Queen is the UK National Anthem, not the English one, so England could choose a different one (they don't currently have one). Obvious possibilities would be Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem.

I can only think that there must be a lot of behind the scenes pressure from the English FA on the manager to select the 'big-names' from the 'big clubs' because every new manager says they'll select based on form no matter what club they play for, but then every England manager then always ends up picking the same 'big names' from the same 'big clubs' regardless of form.

So, it's not that Gylfi Sigurdsson is everywhere, but that there are two players named Sigurdsson. There is also a Sigthorsson.

I wonder if Sigurd, Sigurd and Sigthor are in a pub somewhere together watching their kids.

Wait are you implying an FA is corrupt, incompetent and money hungry?

3 Lions have 4 players firmly planted in the box on deep offensive possessions. No movement, no overloads, some of that has to be on the players, unless Hodge specifically told them that was the strategy. Also, does Iceland have a team nickname? The norse?!?

Our best choice winger is a centre forward. Our best choice creative midfielder is a striker.
The balance is shit once again we are forcing player into roles instead of picking the best players at those positions. It's every time. As long as I can remember

Look as an Irish American I realize I have no cultural leg to stand on (and I love Jerusalem) but "Send her victorious, Happy and glorious" is a truly excellent turn of phrase and and nice for your team to run out to in my mind.

Hey Jude has been the anthem for at least 20 years.

Agree completely with this. People fixate on the wide players and the wingers but the team is really broken down the spine. They have two CBs who can't pass, a DM in Dier who is pretty good in his role but not a deep lying playmaker, two AMs in Rooney and Alli who can't really pass and have one assist and zero goals between them in open play in four games, and a CF in Kane who hasn't produced all tournament.
Yeah, and Alli is a really strange player. Pochettino gets a ton of credit and it is deserved for finding a formation that works with his players. Alli is trying to take up the positions of a #10 but that isn't a position in a 4-3-3. Then you have Rooney who is far too willing to ping balls wide. I don't think he's been all that bad as a midfielder and he's actually working box to boxbetter than Alli I think but just because the wide option is available doesn't mean you have to take it. He's playing it safe and hitting a lot of early diagonals but England lack anyone who can take advantage of the space provided by an early diagonal. It's hurting more than it is helping IMO. Whether it is on the dribble or with a pass England need to find a way to beat a layer.

Exactly. The manager needs to say, I play this formation and will choose my team accordingly. If you happen to be one of the 'best' 10 players in England, but are second best at the positions I need, then you don't get in the team.

But no, they pick the best 10 players, and try to wedge them into the formation they want so they're all playing out of position.

Yeah. What's interesting is that when England beat Germany a month or two ago, England played 4-2-3-1 with Ali in the #10 just behind Kane. They played really well that day, so I wonder now why they chose to play 4-3-3? The only thing I can think of is to accommodate Rooney (who didn't play in the Germany game).

Interesting how Ian Darke keeps insisting that Rooney is a Messi/Ronaldo caliber player as a talent and a leader instead of pointing out that he's a player without a position and in decline..

I feel like Iceland need another goal to win this - either in regulation or overtime.

That Vardy chance was much better from England. Split the defense centrally with 2 passes and got him through on goal. Great play by the defender

I don't know Xs and Os and England's squad well enough to understand why Vardy is a sub instead of a starter, but his pace is just so hard to deal with that it really seems like he should be in there putting pressure on back lines for 90 minutes.

He plays for Leicester. He's lucky he even made the squad.

To be fair against a team playing defensively Kane , who for Spurs is awesome, is a better target man. For a team playing the counter etc vardy. But yeah Kane has played like ass again bar that volley so ... Yeah

Is there anything more English than my laughing about England bringing 5 strikers and then having their manager make subs to get all 5 of them on the pitch?

Because you have to play championship players from clubs like Manche...nevermind.
