To a novice, can someone explain why that was a red card? He literally tapped him on the toe.

Also, why isn't there an embellishing rule (is there one)?
Denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity by a foul -- even if just a common foul -- is always a sending off.

And yes, simulation is unsporting behavior and is to be be cautioned with a yellow card if the ref judges there was intent to deceive, but it rarely gets called where there actually was a foul (as opposed to attempts to deceive the ref into calling a non-foul a foul).

New It's a foul, but that was ridiculous simulation.
He´s sprinting 30+m, then he just got his foot swiped away before he could plant it.
I don´t know what you mean. If you look in the super slomo and don´t like Griezmann´s facial expression, that´s just the wrong way in going about such (highspeed) scenes.

In that scene? OMG :)

And yes, I also don´t like les Baguettes...

Just too much quality in the French side. Ireland did well to make a game of it for the first hour.

This is going to be a really fun half of the draw. Quarterfinals set up to be:
Germany vs Italy/Spain
France vs (probably) England

And then a cracker semi final no matter who comes through.

The 718
Slovakia just isn't close to Germany.
Few are, which is why I was so disappointed when my Polish blood brothers* stood toe to to with Germany, had the better chances, and didn't win.

*i am of 50/50 Polish and Italian descent but can't bring myself to root for the loathsome Azzurri.

Hideous, and there is zero connection to their colors.

At least Portugal could say that green is a national color, even if it isn't glow in the dark green.

Hazard put on an absolute clinic in the first half. Phenomenal.

For Belgium, anything short of making the final would be hugely disappointing given the quality in their side and their draw.

I don't think that is fair. Poland and Portugal are both very good sides. Poland gave Germany an absolute run for their money last week. In a knockout format either team could win a match against Belgium without it being a major disappointment IMO

Hazard a bunch of highlight reel dribbles inside the box no end product while Lukaku sits there waiting for the ball.

It's like Hungary thought that by heading the ball out of the box, they didn't need to keep playing.

GEEZ, HAZARD. I'M SORRY SAID YOU WERE A BALLHOG, YOU AMAZING TALENT.

...

It wouldn't be a "major" disappointment in the sense that "major" is not strong enough of a word. This is by far the best squad in their history and the only time they could have a legit claim to best XI on the continent. For this team to lose to the likes of Poland would be "everybody's getting fired" levels of disappointment.

Another way to put it: even the English, people raised to expect failure, would be massively disappointed by being knocked out by Poland.
